A Warner Bros. book-to-film adaptation that is, in a nutshell, “Harry Potter set in space?” What makes this interesting plot line even more fantastic is that Harry Potter producer David Heyman is set to also produce this film!
The Planet Thieves is written by Dan Krokos and is set to hit the shelves in May, published by Tor/Macmillan. Deadline reports that “the book focuses on a young space cadet who finds himself caught in the middle of Earth’s struggle to survive. His ship is attacked by an alien race bent on gaining control of a weapon they’re carrying on board.”
The Potter parallels are definitely noticeable, but we’ll need more than a two-sentence summary to determine whether or not it could truly pass as “Harry Potter set in space.” Since Heyman is producing, he was probably able to sell the pitch well since he’s still somewhat coming fresh off of Deathly Hallows Part II, which hit theaters about 14 months ago.
Heyman is also producing the upcoming CGI book-to-film adaptation of Paddington Bear, as well as working with Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón on a French film titled A Boy and His Shoe. Krokos has previously written False Memory, which was published in August by Disney Hyperion.
What are your thoughts on this film adaptation? Do you think it’s “Harry Potter set in space?” Who would you like to see star in the film? Any Potter alums?
