The third installment in the now-trilogy for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit has been scheduled for a release date of December 17, 2014.

Additionally, the second installment in The Hobbit has been retitled The Desolation of Smaug, as we previously speculated could happen.

Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said, “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”

Update: The Hobbit: There and Back Again has been moved to December 17, 2014. It was originally set for July 18, but the studio felt the need to set a year in between each film.

The third installment will be called The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which Warner Bros. will release seven months after the second installment.

We’ll continue to update the post as the story develops. In the meantime, sound off in the comments!

Riddles in the Dark sounded better than Desolation of Smaug, but I guess it makes sense cuz the riddles chapter will probably already happen in Unexpected Journey. What I don’t get is Pete J just extending the 2 films into three or are they actually filming more footage?

I’m fairly positive they are going back and filming more, not necessary events that happened in The Hobbit specifically, but back story and more about how “the war of the one ring” we’ll say occurred (how Sauron gained power and all that, events from The Similarin I believe).

I like Riddles in the Dark better as well. I’m excited to see the scenes they’re adding that weren’t in the Hobbit itself and to see all of the extra characters and stuff.

I would have much preferred if it had stayed as two parts with There and Back Again as the second one. Really it would have been best if it was There and Back Again Parts 1 and 2.

The Hobbit films are using subtitles because the LotR films did. Part 1 and 2 would seem out of place when all other films used Subtitles (ie, Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, etc.). Keeping it consistent with the style of the rest of the series unifies the whole franchise.

Those weren’t subtitles…………those were the names of the books

I am talking just about the movies. The movies borrowed the names of the books and used them for subtitles for each film. Since Hobbit is just one book they had to use lines from the book.

Yah. So The Hobbit: There and Back Again Part 1 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again Part 2.

Warner Bros didn’t have anything for Summer 2014 so they were probably keen to put The Hobbit there.

  • Hola

I rather give my money to this movie than a Twilight movie….even if there are three parts now….people pay lots of money to watch shitty movies…but when Peter Jackson, director of the LOTR trilogy, says he is going to split The Hobbit everyone starts getting angry and impatient….the man know what he is doing…I bet they will be great…

  • isenhobbitz

Isn’t that the same release date at X-men: Days of Future Past?

a short book into 3 movies?? w/e. in the end i’ll watch pretty much whatever Peter Jackson makes for me to consume.

    • DoctorYes

WHATEVER he makes? Did you watch The Lovely Bones? He made that a couple years ago.

i know, i’m just irrationally loyal to some people/things. like Jennifer Garner or The Office. even when i know it’s gonna be pretty bad (Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past or the Office after Steve Carrell left), i just can’t not see it.

I don’t know why some people are getting all annoyed… it’s more Hobbit movies, more LOTR in general, and it’s Peter Jackson for god’s sake. We can trust the man.

3 movies? are you kidding me??
