ABC has just confirmed that the dream of most Avengers fans is coming true. The Avengers world will be crossing over into television.

Thanks to Deadline for confirming the news that was only speculated upon after Disney confirmed that Joss Whedon would be creatively handling Avengers 2 along with an Avengers-themed television show. According to the release, the pilot will begin production immediately.

Before we even knew what the show would be about, it had been treated as a “high-concept cop show,” so it might be safe to expect a superhero-themed version of Law and Order with a kooky Whedonesque spin. Currently, Whedon is slated to direct the pilot, but the director’s chair for the entire show remains unoccupied.

A cast list hasn’t yet been confirmed, but fans are hoping for the return of Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders as Nick Fury and Maria Hill as well as the return of agents Barton and Romanoff in the forms of Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson.

Currently, the main players of The Avengers (Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo) are rumored to make cameos every now and then, but again, no actual confirmation has been offered. Another rumor deals with the idea that the show has the potential explore the heroes and villains that haven’t yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as give more backstory into the peacekeeping organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D.

Whatever happens, we can be certain that the show will lead up to Avengers 2.

We at Hypable look forward to bringing you the latest news about the upcoming show, tentatively titled S.H.I.E.L.D..

I am afraid this will be so bad…
But then I remember it’s Joss Whedon and know it will be so good.

Just give him the budget and the time to make the episodes and it will rock

  • Nick Rantuccio

I agree. It’s Joss Whedon! Just give him the right amount of time and they’ll be great episodes. Can’t have ABC execs rushing things.

The really interesting thing will be to see who is cast to play as the Avengers. Will we see Robert Downey Jr. and co. reprising their roles in the televison adaption? Or will they re-cast? Or will they just take an entirely new route, plot wise, and maybe shoot for the New Avengers? Who knows, regardless, it’ll be awesome.

This new show is expected to be a continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not its own separate thing.

If the main characters of Thor, Hulk, Cap, and Iron Man are indeed depicted, it would have to be the actors who portrayed them in the prior movies. (Probably cameos at the most)

This show will probably go the route of further exploring the wacky world of characters left unseen. By introducing lesser known heroes/allies/villains, the movies in turn can hit the ground running with their main plots and spend less time on minor character backstories.

Whedon back on TV, YES!! He can easily make this an incredible show, so excited!

  • Bob

YESYESYESYESYES! Scarlett AND Jeremy. Hehehe. I love life right now.

Personally, I’d love for this to start pre-Avengers as I’d love to see some more Coulson.

No reason why Coulson can’t come back as a life-model decoy. Not alot would change about his personality and Joss has a penchant for throwing androids into his TV shows. Remember Buffybot?

Brace yourself for more sad Spider-man memes.

Ok, I was skeptical at first, but I think it can work as S.H.I.E.L.D.

I know I might be part of a minority but all of my favourite bits from The Avengers were with SHIELD. Cannot wait. I think the perfect date to start the show would be September 2014 which will be after all the Phase 2 movies are released and they will be able to do at least one season of the show before Avengers 2.

Yay! Hope Hawkeye is the main character . That would satisfy my need for a Hawkeye film.

Are they actually making this with the actors from the movie? I can’t imagine they’ll be willing to cross over to TV (Not including Cobie Smulders).

    • http://twitter.com/akacj7 Caroline J.

well, cobie smulders is on her own hit show on CBS so that’s probably not an option. i trust joss & co to have already come up with alternate concept.

  • gcw07

I’ll be shocked if any of the movie stars show up on the series, which is a disappointment. Without Nick Fury or Maria Hill running the organization it would have been better to just go with the focus on one person, such as Mockingbird. Jackson I could see doing a single cameo in the pilot episode, but he won’t be back beyond that. Cobie Smulders is busy with HIMYM. Don’t see any of the main Avengers cast showing up even for a cameo. Hopefully it will be good. I trust Whedon, but hopefully they have a good idea of where to go with this.

knowing Joss’s awesomeness, he’ll find a sneaky and humorous way around the problem of trying to lure big movie actors (and cobie smulders, who is on her own hit show) to a tv show.

      • gcw07

That is why I still think they should have just focused on someone like Mockingbird. You could basically revolve the show around a single agent, with the occasional cameo from Fury or Hill. I just hope he was fully involved with the concept and is not just being brought in on some other person’s idea.

this totally just made my month lol

    • gcw07

Yes, it should be live action. Especially considering they already have 3 animated shows (2 currently on air, 1 upcoming) airing with the focus being on the Avengers/SHIELD.

Joss Whedon is the REASON television was invented. If anyone can make this work, it’ll be Joss, and he’ll make it spectacular.

Could we get Coulson in on it, too?

  • Liam K

So if Joss Whedon does agree to be show-runner, I wonder how long it would take for Nathan Fillion to get on the show lol

Here’s hoping Hawkeye and Black Widow are the main characters. They deserve their own movie, after all. Especially Hawkeye, considering he was on Team Loki for most of the Avengers movie.
