Last night the cast of Doctor Who arrived at New York City’s famous Ziegfeld Theatre in style via twin DeLoreons. Marty McFly wasn’t there but Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Caro Skinner were.
To the delight of the crowds, the cast signed autographs, posed for photos and then took part in a Q & A, hosted by Chris Hardwicke of The Nerdist fame, all before the footage of “Asylum of the Daleks” rolled. Whereas the Q & A will reportedly be available eventually on the Nerdist’s YouTube channel, spoilers on the footage were nowhere to be found. As was the case when the episode was shown to viewers in the U.K. last week, the audience was asked not to reveal spoilers. Near as we can tell, people have kept their word. That’s not so say people weren’t thrilled. Some non-spoilery reaction is below.
The Doctor Who premiere was incredible. I can’t spoil anthing about the episode, but it was great, and so were Matt and Karen!

Even the writer for BBC America’s Anglophenia blog was impressed stating, “We won’t spoil the episode, but ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ ranks with Steven Moffat‘s best installments. (Actually, and I’m going out of the limb, it’s arguably his greatest achievement on the show. Certainly on par with ‘Blink.’) It’s a hilarious, terrifying tearjerker that delivers peak performances from all of the cast, and, yes, it features the Daleks at the scariest they’ve been in years. Seeing the episode on the big screen only amplified its impact. It was no surprise that nearly all 1,100 in the audience leaped to their feet when the end credits rolled.”
BBC America is in full-swing trying to garner more viewers to the show. The audience reaction is a big PR plus for BBC America who took a serious hit last week in a botched ticket giveaway ripe with miscommunication, a ticketing system unprepared for the volume of respondents, and an apology eight hours later that didn’t address the crux of the issue. It is sponsoring a Twitter campaign called #newtowho where current fans talk about their first-time Doctor Who experiences and tell new fans what makes the show special. Who better to be the face of the campaign than the former Doctor, David Tennant?
What are you most hoping for in “Asylum of the Daleks”?
