“Least promising” doesn’t necessarily mean “worst,” although more often than not, they are synonymous with each other. We have very little to judge on, but it may be safe to say that you won’t find these shows on our DVR next month. We are judging the new shows on their trailers and various reviews from around the Internet – sites such as Entertainment Weekly and the Huffington Post are given advanced copies of the pilots to judge.
Partners – CBS
Last year, CBS tried to produce a guy buddy-buddy comedy entitled “How to Be a Gentleman.” The show didn’t last more than a month – and for good reason. The broad non-specific comedy just didn’t find its niche with its core potential audience, and this show is more than likely to follow its path. While having the room for potential, it’s more likely to sink than swim based on the trailer.
Next Caller – NBC
Created by and starring Dane Cook, this television show about a radio show seems tired and outdated. An old battle of the sexes concept and a cast of over-the-top obnoxious characters. Aren’t we tired of seeing this? Maybe not, but the way this show is presented to viewers, complete with bad acting and obvious comedy, it’s almost sure to fail.
Animal Practice – NBC
A show about a snarky veterinarian who hates people so he works with animals. The concept seems solid, but the execution looks as painful as…well…an execution. Animal Practice strives to break itself away from the pack by featuring fuzzy friends instead of sickly patients, but sadly, it doesn’t seem much different from the endless shows set in hospitals. You know the show will struggle when the comments on the above YouTube video are all about the monkey, who can be see in the Hangover films, and playing Annie’s Boobs on Community.
The Neighbors – ABC
Watching the trailer for this show, you’d think it’d be the remake to a terrible 1980’s alien movie. What ABC was thinking when they picked this up is way beyond my knowledge; especially after having perhaps the breakout show this past season, “Revenge.” The concept seems short-lived at best and the CGI (which could be a highlight for a project like this), looks like a screensaver. If there were a place for Neighbors on TV, it would be on Nickelodeon after iCarly. Not that there’s anything wrong with iCarly.
Save Me – NBC
The two minute trailer for this show felt like an eternity. We didn’t laugh (this is supposed to be a comedy?), nor could we figure out exactly what the teaser was trying to tell us about the plot. Walking a fine line between blasphemy and partaking in a mainstream conversation about God and religion, “save me” is what we would be screaming if we are forced to watch this show (thankfully, we are not.)
Honorable mention: Beauty and the Beast – CW
Article Continues Below
CW has its niche: rich kids and monsters. The ‘beast,’ played by a handsome Jay Ryan is a government experiment gone wrong (much more Hulk than reimagined fairy tale). In fact, this hardly resembles its namesake and could probably do better under a different title and thus, different viewer expectations. While the pilot actually looks somewhat decent (if you get past the whole bizarre woods scenes that prefaces the actual story), we can’t imagine where it will go once the secret – who the ‘beast’ is – comes out.
While we still have to wait a few months, we’ll find out which shows in the above list make it to next season, and which are speedily canceled. Are there any shows that you aren’t looking forward to premiering? Let us know in the comments!
