Deadline has just revealed that Christopher Eccleston will play the Thor 2 villain, Malekith The Accursed.

You most likely know Eccleston from his role as the ninth Doctor Who, but he’s also known for playing a mobster in Gone in 60 Seconds opposite Nicolas Cage. As for the Marvel villain he will play, the dark-elf ruler Malekith The Accursed is a super-villain in the Marvel Universe.

We think Christopher Eccleston is an incredible choice for the next villain to battle the god of thunder in Thor: The Dark World and we look forward to seeing him on the big screen again.

UPDATED: Christopher Eccleston has responded to his recent casting:

“’Thor 2′? Yeah I start shooting in August. I haven’t seen a script yet which makes me nervous but yeah! Alan Taylor is directing who has done ‘Game of Thrones’ so it should be good.”

Thor: The Dark World is currently filming in London and will hit theaters November 8, 2013.

Maybe now since this is such a high profile part he will stop complaining about the typecast he got from Doctor Who.

I don’t think he complained about being typecasted as the Doctor rather that he left Doctor Who to avoid being typecast as well as the on set issues.

They started filming before announcing whose playing the villain?

    • Liderc

Films aren’t shot in sequence, shocker I know =P

      • Kyle

yeah i guess i just thought they had started filming before deciding who would play the villain, but now i realize that they just kept it quiet

    • Bob

Well sometimes they like to keep this stuff a secret. And they don’t film stuff in the order in which it happens in the movie… So maybe his character didn’t need to be cast right away. :)

    I can’t breathe, I’m so excited about this. =D

He was also on Heroes when it was good then he disappeared because the show forgot about him.

    • Ande Anderson

Lots of characters disappeared on that show, he was great on it though.

    Thor + 9th Doctor = EPIC

  • jaci

Seriously? It’s as if the Thor writers consistently WANT me to like the villains.

In some cases a realistic villain is also a likable villain.

“You most likely know Eccleston from his appearances on Doctor Who” Appearances?! He was The Doctor! Come on Hypable…

    • Liderc

what would you like them to write, “as Doctor Who on Doctor Who”?

      Sounds a little redundant…

      • Vera

“You may know him from playing The Doctor on Doctor Who” would be much better then what they wrote, even if it sounds a bit dumb. The way they phrased it made it look like he had done a little guest role in one episode. Eccelston was a bit more important then that.

I agree. As someone who does not watch Dr. Who, your edited sentence would’ve been much more helpful than what they had written.

My apologies Vera, I intended to type “as Doctor Who,” but it was quite late last night and just rushed this one out when it hit the web. Was more concerned with photoshopping the images together, since I thought Chris actually shared quite a resemblance to Malekith heh.
