Recently, you might have seen our article all about TV’s freshest male faces and from where you might recognize them. We figured that it was about time we show you a few of the unknown female faces from some of television’s biggest shows. Hopefully a few of these will jog your memory…

Lizzy Caplan

You know her as:

Julia on New Girl

You might recognize her from:

True Blood, Smallville, or Mean Girls

While Lizzy Caplan made a bit of a splash as Julia, Nick’s lawyer girlfriend on New Girl this season, you may recognize her from a myriad of other places in the past.

Her role in Cloverfield is hard to forget since she (quite literally) exploded on-screen halfway through the movie, but her most famous role is easily Janis Ian in Mean Girls who so accurately sums up the truly evil Regina George when she says, “’Cause she’s a life ruiner. She ruins people’s lives.”

You may also recognize her from a recurring role on Smallville as Tina Greer, the body-morphing, childhood friend of Lana Lang’s, or even from True Blood where she spent 6 episodes playing Amy Burley, the love interest of Jason Stackhouse.

Or maybe, just maybe, you were one of the lucky few at Comic-Con that got to see her convince her husband to use an extra-terrestrial weapon to commit armed robbery.

Jessica Parker Kennedy

You know her as:

Melissa Glaser on The Secret Circle

You might recognize her from:

50/50, Smallville, or Another Cinderella Story

While we may not be getting a season 2 for The Secret Circle, Jessica Parker Kennedy gave us a character to remember bringing Melissa Glaser to the screen. She has appeared a few other notable places in her blossoming career, including a small role in last year’s 50/50 as a date that goes horribly wrong for Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character, Adam.

She also appeared in 3 episodes of Smallville as a young runaway named Bette who later becomes the infamous firestarter Plastique. Lastly, she played opposite Selena Gomez in the ABC Family Original Movie Another Cinderella Story as her fashionista best friend. We’re sure we have much more to see from this young woman, and hopefully she will re-appear on the silver screen soon.

Lana Parrilla

You know her as:

Regina Mills (aka The Evil Queen) on Once Upon a Time

You might recognize her from:

Lost, 24, or Spin City

She has proven her prowess playing the Evil Queen on Once Upon a Time during its premiere season, but Lana Parrilla has made appearances in a few other series throughout her career that you may have missed.

You may remember seeing her on Lost as Greta, guardian of the Looking Glass station that captured & interrogated Charlie during Lost‘s 3rd season, or on 24 as Sarah Gavin, the agent in charge of investigating Chloe O’Brien’s involvement with Jack Bauer.

One of her biggest breaks was playing assistant Angie Ordonez on Spin City during its 5th season after Michael J. Fox left the show and Charlie Sheen took over. However, the job was short-lived due to Parrilla leaving after feeling that her character was poorly utilized.

Lena Headey

You know her as:

Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones

You might recognize her from:

White Collar, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, or 300

Cersei Lannister is nothing if not memorable. While the character definitely has staying power, you may have recognized the actress that brings her quiet intensity to screen, Lena Headey. Her big break (for US audiences) came in 2006 in the Zach Snyder film, 300, playing Queen Gorgo, wife to Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas. She emitted a sense of calm strength that has proven itself useful as she portrays Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones.

She also made quite a name for herself playing the title character in the Fox action series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The gun-toting, terminator evading Sarah Connor breathed fresh air into a franchise that needed new life. She has also appeared in one episode of White Collar in 2011 where she played Sally aka Vulture, a love interest for Mozzie & unwitting accomplice to an international bank heist.

Melissa Rauch

You know her as:

Bernadette Rostenkowski on The Big Bang Theory

You might recognize her from:

True Blood or The Office

Bernadette, the high-pitched, snarky girlfriend of Howard Wallowitz, has quickly become a beloved character on The Big Bang Theory, but you may remember her from a short stint on The Office when she played Cathy, the woman with the huge newborn that shared a hospital room with Jim & Pam.

Like another actress on this list, Melissa also spent a short time on True Blood. She played Summer, a bubbly love interest for Hoyt when his mother is trying to separate him from Jessica. While her role was short-lived, she definitely made an impact on the show, as Hoyt finally decides to leave his mother’s house & constant meddling and move in with Jessica.

Tori Devitto

You know her as:

Meredith Fell on The Vampire Diaries

You might recognize her from:

Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill, or Scrubs

Meredith Fell quickly made an impression on Alaric on The Vampire Diaries, and it is easy to see why. The marvelous actress protraying her is none other than Tori DeVitto. The wife to fellow Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley, DeVitto has made quite a name for herself on a few other memorable programs as well.

While she did make a very short cameo Scrubs, as the “Gorgeous Girl with Dog”, her work on Pretty Little Liars is probably where most people remember seeing her. She played Melissa Hastings, older sister to Spencer on Pretty Little Liars, where she was constantly battling her sister over one thing or another, especially when it came to boyfriends. She also spent a good deal of time on One Tree Hill, where she played Nanny Carrie, hired to take care Jamie when his mother returned to work.

Honorable Mentions:

Michelle Fairley

Make sure the next time you are watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 that you keep a look out for Michele Fairley as Hermione’s mother, Mrs. Granger. She is best known for playing Catelyn Stark on Game of Thrones.

Courtney Ford

Do you recognize this woman? Her face keeps popping in big show after big show. She has had small/recurring roles in: The Big Bang Theory, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Grey’s Anatomy, Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Ugly Betty, and even Monk. She seems to pop in for a short time everywhere, so keep an eye out, she might just show up on your favorite show next!

Did you know any of these actresses from anywhere other than their current roles? Did we leave anyone out? Where did your favorite actresses get their start? Sound off below!

Jessica Parker Kennedy was also in X-Men: First Class

    • http://twitter.com/summcohen summcohen

No she wasn’t. I think you’re mistaking her with someone else :)

      • Enelya_e-cloaca

         IMDB.com Misfits:
        Michelle Fairley … Louise Young
        2 episodes

  • Kato

Michelle Fairley was on Misfits. I feel like that is a glaring oversight.

    • Hugo Weasley

      nathans mom?

  • http://hypable.com Selina

WHOA. I did not recognise Lana Parrilla from Lost at all! Isn’t it weird how you won’t think to remember actors until you connect to one of their roles?

    • Kristen Kranz

I know right? Like, I recently found out that the girl that plays Caroline on TVD (Candice Accola) was in Juno & played the girl in the science class that complains… I was like: “WHAT?”

      • http://purplehrdwonder.livejournal.com/ Caitlin Kelly

Candice Accola was in an episode of Drop Dead Diva, too, and I had a freakout.

        • Emily Zitterkopf

Candace Accola was in 2 episodes of Greek too!

This is a great article the one actress that jumped out at me was Lizzy Caplan because I remember looking her up after her great turn on True Blood as Jason’s seemingly first real girlfriend. I didn’t know Jessica Parker Kennedy was in Smallville but in 10 years worth of seasons you do get through a lot of young actors and actresses who come on to play minor roles, I can still remember Plastique though as it was a very weird time in Smallville with Chloe being all morally ambiguous.

  • wade stew

Michelle Fairley was also Nathan’s mother in Misfits

  • jess

whoa i had no idea lizzy caplan was on new girl! and i loved julia! :O

  • DreamNox58

I almost cried seeing Melissa and the Secret Circle…….made me remember how much I miss watching it every Thursday.  Then I saw Melissa from Pretty Little Liars and cheered up only a bit because I don’t like her character.  I just realised both are named Melissa in their shows.

  • Jessica Lancaster

Great article! Totally blew my mind on that first one; I recognized her from True Blood while she was on New Girl, but I had no idea she was Janis in Mean Girls! Still having trouble believing that, haha.

  • LyleBrandon

“Regina may look like your typical scum sucking road whore, but in reality, she’s so much more”

I die for Janis Ian. Plus, Litzy was also on that show about sisters with Jennifer Esposito

    • Alex

“Related” It was good.. Been meaning to find it on the web, I’ve been unsuccessful.

  • Mad

OMG I knew some of these, but not all.

  • http://twitter.com/hessolifelike Marie

I first saw Courtney Ford on Dexter, and she just seems to pop up everywhere! She was a guest on Criminal Minds as well.

  • Eliz

I knew you couldn’t have possible written this article without mentioning Tori DeVitto. I first saw her on One Tree Hill, then again on Pretty Little Liars, and most recently on The Vampire Diaries.
Another honorable mention might have been Michaela McManus, who played Lindsey in One Tree Hill, Kim Greylek in Law & Order: SVU, and more recently played Jules in season 2 of The Vampire Diaries.

  • http://buzzhub.tk/ Lucien

What about Kristen Schaal? She’s been on HIMYM, Modern Family, The Office and 30 Rock, as well as Toy Story 3, The Muppets and Dinner for Schmucks

  • frezb

i was watching an episode of NCIS today and Courtney Ford is in it as well. Someone needs to get this girl her own show.

    • akacj7

FOR SERIOUS. she also had a pretty good turn in Parenthood this past season as a cellist.

  • Alexis

Lizzy Caplan is also fantastic in Party Down.

  • tG

there are no beloved characters on big bang theory, that show is terrible

    • Liderc

Must be why it’s the biggest syndicated show on TV in household ratings and total numbers.

      http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/07/24/syndicated-tv-ratings-big-bang-theory-number-one-in-household-ratings-total-viewers/142366/

      Facts>your logic

      • Nope

and tons of people like two and a half men, and that show is sh*t. your point?

      • http://twitter.com/loerwyn Kathryn

Twilight and 50 Shades have been extremely successful.

        Success =/= Quality

        • Liderc

In this case success does mean quality.

Comparing nonsense like 50 shades or Twilight to a quality and intelligent show like TBBT is ridiculous.
Maybe it’s too witty and simply goes over your head?

          • http://twitter.com/loerwyn Kathryn

A quality show might be successful, but quality is not a pre-requisite for success. That was my point.

But just to humour you, I dislike TBBT. Not because it’s “too witty” (I’m English and I have a taste for surrealist/post-modern comedy as well as satire, just so you know), but simply because it’s dire. I also hate the perpetuation of geek stereotypes in it. It’s not a show for geeks like it might claim to be, it’s a show for non-geeks.

          • Matilda

Kathryn, I couldn’t agree more! The comedy is so weak on that show. In fact, I don’t even know if it can be called “comedy”. It’s predictable and very bland. Just because people watch a show, doesn’t mean it’s “good”. It means our standards are plummeting.

          • Liderc

I guess that’s why my two best friends I went to university with, one who works for Nasa (literally a Nasa mechanical engineer for the mars rover) and the other a state industrial engineer both love the show and we talk about it weekly.

It is a show for “geeks,” just because you don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. Obviously with 10million viewers it has an audience and includes intelligent viewers as well as the average crowd.

          • http://twitter.com/loerwyn Kathryn

Liderc; your friends liking a show doesn’t make it good, nor does it prove that it’s a good show.

There are plenty of geeks who like TBBT, but it’s not a “geek” show. It’s “geek chic” if anything, as it’s about popular geek culture (DC/Marvel comics, so on and so forth) and geek stereotypes.

It’s not a show *for* geeks, though. It’s not made *for* them, it’s made for a wider audience.

    • Matilda

Hell to the yes. I’ve tried watching it. Several times. It sucks. It’s easy humor. I’ve given it more than enough chances to impress and it keeps failing. Give me How I Met Your Mother or Community ANY DAY!

  • Glaciusx

Lizzy Caplan shocked me the most!

  • Andrew_ww

I didn’t recognize any of these from the shows/movies I’ve watched in the past! Lena Headey, Lizzy Caplan (especially her), Lana Parrilla, and Michele Fairley.

  • tnt

Even though I’m sure it’s been said many times, Michelle Fairley was Nathan’s mother on the British Teen Drama Misfits in season one

  • http://twitter.com/taylie27 Taylore Thompson

This reminds of how I felt when I rewatched How I Met Your Mother and realized that Zoey was Emma from Once Upon a Time

  • John Rutherford

Michelle Fairley was also played Nathan’s mother on Misfits.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amanda-Hafer/35105289 Amanda Hafer

Really? You’re gonna mention Lizzy Caplan and not Party Down? For shame…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=11700475 Emily Mckeown

    great article!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TUSLID7S6PTWA7FTIJIG3YHYNU Marie

What about that one girl in the The Wedding Bride episode on HIMYM? She was on like three shows I watch in like two weeks.
Just looked her up. Judy Greer!
