First Look: Voldemort to appear during tonight’s London Olympics Opening Ceremonies

Spoiler alert!

UPDATE: As promised, J.K. Rowling and Lord Voldemort appeared during the Opening Ceremonies. See photos!

As heavily rumored, tonight’s Opening Ceremonies will involve lots of famous British characters including Lord Voldemort himself. Check out this photo of him from last night’s rehearsal:

Other characters set to make an appearance reportedly include Mary Poppins, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, and Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

In the United States, the Opening Ceremonies air tonight on NBC at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. Check your local listings for other airtimes.

This is going to be the most uncomfortable, unbearable, tacky and just plain corny Olympic ceremonies ever witnessed. Mary Poppins and Voldemort on an English green? Seriously? This is not British culture. This is what the rest of the world thinks of Britain- that it’s a land of wizards and flying nannies. I’ll be skipping this ceremony.

      I doubt you’d ever even admit to enjoying it after saying what you did. I cannot make an opinion since it has yet to be shown in the US.

Alice, Voldemort, Mary Poppins, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Cruella de Vil – is this really the best that British literature can offer??? And since when did Voldemort become more popular than Harry Potter himself? Is this really what British literature is all about?? Since Brits are so obsessed with royalty, how about doing a segment on the Royal Family – Victoria, George V, George VI, Elizabeth I, Mary (Queen of Scots)? I think the main problem is that the Brits don’t really have a history to speak about – I mean, if you take the Royal Family out of the equation, what else have you got? Previous hosts like Athens (Greece) and Beijing (China) had their own ancient civilizations which were beautifully showcased as part of their country’s history and culture. Britain never really had an ancient civilization. So, exactly at what point does Britain’s history really begin? What are Britain’s contributions to the rest of the world? I’m too embarrassed to watch this ceremony now.

  As a citizen of a nation (India) belonging to the Commonwealth, I can attest to the fact that the ONLY thing that the Brits did was loot and plunder the rest of the world (how many of you knew that India was the richest country on Earth before the Brits decided to RULE, LOOT & PLUNDER us for more than 200 years??)

  Second question: Did you ever learn about the act of “war”?
  
  War, is one of the little reasons the rest of the world should be thanking, and respecting, the United Kingdom – unless the idea of the whole world speaking German appeals to you. I understand your opinion of having characters appear at an Olympic ceremony making no logical sense(what happened to Holmes?), but you kind of talk shit about the UK there.
  I’m Canadian, and while i know nothing about the Royal family, details about the countries history, or what the definition of “ancient civilization” is, I respect the country, because without it, I wouldn’t be living in the amazing and FREE country I do. In no way do I find the Olympics or many sports interesting, but I do respect the UK for what it’s done for the rest of the world, so I say they can be silly and embarrass themselves if they want.

  Wow. Do understand how disrespectful you are? Britain has no ancient civilisation? Of course it did, just like every other country. Ancient Greece and China certainly made many great discoveries before Britain but do not belittle the discoveries we did make and the many great people we have produced.
  
  You criticise us for being an empire? The Romans were another great ancient civilisation. They had an empire. They looted and plundered many countries including Britain. All countries doubtless have parts of their history that are less glorious than others.
  
  It is unfair to judge any country on the worst parts of its past. As others have said the world owes thanks to Britain for its contribution in both world wars. We have produced some of histories renowned explorers, scientists, writers and philosophers.
  
  You don’t like that voldemort is part of our ceremony? Neither do I really, but that’s no reason to essentially say we are nothing and never have been. Britain has a history. A long messy, sometimes terrible sometimes great history. I suggest you go and learn some of it.

  You are being incredibly disrespectful. Not to mention going against the spirit of the Olympic Games themselves – it’s meant to be a time for countries to come together and compete as equals, and respect each other. By belittling an entire country and group of people you’re doing just the opposite of that.
  
  All countries have their good and bad points in history, including Greece and Beijing which you mentioned. That doesn’t mean that they’re not great civilizations, every country deserves respect.

  As cool as it would be for him to be involved and to do the final lighting, it’s customary that an athlete be the final runner of the torch. I certainly wouldn’t mind some Doctor Who references in the ceremony, it’d be a nice little treat, but I don’t expect it to happen.

I thought this opening ceremony was oddif they are going to celebrate literature, I’m fine with the Alice and Wonderland and Mary Poppins but don’t understand celebrating JK Rowling’s but how do you skip the two people that invented the fantasy genre – Tolkien and CS Lewis?
