We posted this on our Facebook page last night, and now we thought we’d share it here.

Spoiler alert!

UPDATE: As promised, J.K. Rowling and Lord Voldemort appeared during the Opening Ceremonies. See photos!

As heavily rumored, tonight’s Opening Ceremonies will involve lots of famous British characters including Lord Voldemort himself. Check out this photo of him from last night’s rehearsal:

Other characters set to make an appearance reportedly include Mary Poppins, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, and Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

In the United States, the Opening Ceremonies air tonight on NBC at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. Check your local listings for other airtimes.

  • Nicole

That just looks embarrassing for us… :l

  • Mrs_Badcrumble

This is a testimony to Harry Potter’s importance in the world at large (not only to us fans). One of the characters is appearing in the Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremonies!!! What more can we say…

    okaaaaay then…..

  • http://about.me/kyle Kyle

Can you please post Opening Ceremonies spoilers after a cut or something? Some people actually want to be surprised.

  • http://www.facebook.com/heather.smith07 Heather Smith

SPOILER: Apparently he’s going to be killed by Mary Poppins :P

  • Alex

I would think they would put Harry instead of voldemort… :I

  • Sam

I can’t wait to see this!!

  • Lovisa

That is so awesome! Would love if Voldemort appeard on the Opening! :D

  • Bernardotriana

     Just perfect!

  • Seamus MacGillicuddy

This is going to be the most uncomfortable, unbearable, tacky and just plain corny Olympic ceremonies ever witnessed. Mary Poppins and Voldemort on an English green? Seriously? This is not British culture. This is what the rest of the world thinks of Britain- that it’s a land of wizards and flying nannies. I’ll be skipping this ceremony.

    • Kate

So you’re going to knock the whole thing for one portion of the ceremony that you seem completely annoyed with? You don’t even know what else will be featured…

      • Seamus MacGillicuddy

I’m watching it now, and against my better judgment. I was not wrong. This ceremony is HORRIBLE. It’s droll, cliched and simply boring.

        • Kate

I doubt you’d ever even admit to enjoying it after saying what you did. I cannot make an opinion since it has yet to be shown in the US.

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

It’s just fun. No one pins this to the UK.

  • TheHamburglar

Someone ruined the opening ceremony for me tonight by telling me that Snape kills Dumbledore :/

  • Floodmicro

It sounds rubbish, but I’ll forgive them if the Doctor makes an appearance.

  • Anna

I can’t believe they didn’t use this opportunity to stage an actual quidditch match! They could’ve had people flying in wires and everything! It would’ve been awesome!!!

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

OMG. Quidditch World Cup reenactment would have been so sweet.

  • Pixie

Alice, Voldemort, Mary Poppins, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Cruella de Vil – is this really the best that British literature can offer??? And since when did Voldemort become more popular than Harry Potter himself? Is this really what British literature is all about?? Since Brits are so obsessed with royalty, how about doing a segment on the Royal Family – Victoria, George V, George VI, Elizabeth I, Mary (Queen of Scots)? I think the main problem is that the Brits don’t really have a history to speak about – I mean, if you take the Royal Family out of the equation, what else have you got? Previous hosts like Athens (Greece) and Beijing (China) had their own ancient civilizations which were beautifully showcased as part of their country’s history and culture. Britain never really had an ancient civilization. So, exactly at what point does Britain’s history really begin? What are Britain’s contributions to the rest of the world? I’m too embarrassed to watch this ceremony now.

    • Pixie

As a citizen of a nation (India) belonging to the Commonwealth, I can attest to the fact that the ONLY thing that the Brits did was loot and plunder the rest of the world (how many of you knew that India was the richest country on Earth before the Brits decided to RULE, LOOT & PLUNDER us for more than 200 years??)

      • Zara

It’s a bit rich coming from you considering the mess that was the commonwealth games that India put on. Oh and do Austen, Tolkien, Shakespeare, Dickens, Darwin, Newton not mean anything to you?

        • Guest

Don’t forget Doyle! Oh, and the fact that Winston Churchill is still one of, if not the, best leader this world has ever seen.

    • Guest

First question: where do you live?
Second question: Did you ever learn about the act of “war”?

War, is one of the little reasons the rest of the world should be thanking, and respecting, the United Kingdom – unless the idea of the whole world speaking German appeals to you. I understand your opinion of having characters appear at an Olympic ceremony making no logical sense(what happened to Holmes?), but you kind of talk shit about the UK there.
I’m Canadian, and while i know nothing about the Royal family, details about the countries history, or what the definition of “ancient civilization” is, I respect the country, because without it, I wouldn’t be living in the amazing and FREE country I do. In no way do I find the Olympics or many sports interesting, but I do respect the UK for what it’s done for the rest of the world, so I say they can be silly and embarrass themselves if they want.

      • http://www.facebook.com/webefree Mike FreiGeist Hoffmann

…wow, I´ve never heard this much severe propaganda and brainwash from anyone except the lame-stream-media!!

    • Lucki

Wow. Do understand how disrespectful you are? Britain has no ancient civilisation? Of course it did, just like every other country. Ancient Greece and China certainly made many great discoveries before Britain but do not belittle the discoveries we did make and the many great people we have produced.

You criticise us for being an empire? The Romans were another great ancient civilisation. They had an empire. They looted and plundered many countries including Britain. All countries doubtless have parts of their history that are less glorious than others.

It is unfair to judge any country on the worst parts of its past. As others have said the world owes thanks to Britain for its contribution in both world wars. We have produced some of histories renowned explorers, scientists, writers and philosophers.

You don’t like that voldemort is part of our ceremony? Neither do I really, but that’s no reason to essentially say we are nothing and never have been. Britain has a history. A long messy, sometimes terrible sometimes great history. I suggest you go and learn some of it.

    • Guest

You are being incredibly disrespectful. Not to mention going against the spirit of the Olympic Games themselves – it’s meant to be a time for countries to come together and compete as equals, and respect each other. By belittling an entire country and group of people you’re doing just the opposite of that.

All countries have their good and bad points in history, including Greece and Beijing which you mentioned. That doesn’t mean that they’re not great civilizations, every country deserves respect.

  • Lauren37

    You’d think they’d get Ralph Fiennes….

    • Kate

Maybe he’ll do some voicing for it…since it’s like 30ft tall.

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

or maybe the big one will blow up and out pops Ralph!

  • Vivian Lestrange

    10th DOCTOR PLEASE???

    • RAB the Second

Remember Donna! We don’t want her mind to burn, do we?

      • Phantomfluteplayer

But if it is a fixed point, The Doctor ran with the torch before he met Donna (In his timeline at least).

    • Kate

As cool as it would be for him to be involved and to do the final lighting, it’s customary that an athlete be the final runner of the torch. I certainly wouldn’t mind some Doctor Who references in the ceremony, it’d be a nice little treat, but I don’t expect it to happen.

  • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

This is neat and all, but what does this have to do with the Olympics? (I’m not trying to ruin the fun or anything, I just genuinely don’t understand why do they do this? o.O)

    • Liderc

Every country that hosts the Olympics uses their culture during the demonstrations.
      First time Olympics watcher?

      • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

Oh okay. >.< I was never really into sports and neither was my mom, so I never really watched it. My dad would watch the sports part, but never the opening ceremony. ^^'

  • Matthewhpg

If they want to make it REALLY British, they should have the Doctor come and defeat him.

    • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

  • Joe

So this must be the photo that got a crew member fired… I’m working at the games and I’ve been hearing about him haha.  Apparently the hashtag #keepthesurprisealive is a trending thing.

  • Aaron

He’ll Expelliarmus the athletes & Great Britain will win every medal

    • Daughter of Eve

or confundus the judges for more points for GB

      • RAB the Second

And break the Statue of Secrecy?!

    • fhfgh

Or just avada kedavra them all

  • Abbysbully

Wow it’s my nightmare come true… Huge voldemort at the Olympics he probably won’t try to AVADA KEDAVERA everything in sight but it’s to familer

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=636033419 Maritere Domínguez

    WOW can`t wait!

  • http://imnomuggle.wordpress.com Im_No_Muggle

Ok, so Voldemort is cool and all, and I’m a huge Harry Potter fan of course… but when I think of British Literature… Shakespeare anyone?

    • Hola

I guess they go for the demographics….and also recognizable characters….every kid around the world knows who voldemort is….if you put hamlet, or romeo and juliet people will fall asleep….its very interesting they are including all these characters…hope its great

    • Guest

Kenneth Branagh read out some Shakespeare near the beginning!

  • Turbo

    Why so many villains?

  • Andrew_ww

    7:30? They aren’t live?? hahaha

    • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

nope, NBC is airing it at primetime.

      • Kate

Lame isn’t it? They could have at least done one live on one of their sports channels then still done the prime time later. It makes sense to at least show it later, since most people are working today when it would be shown live..

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Wang/542480760 Maria Wang

NBC omg.  I heard they sucked in airing the winter Olympics in Vancouver – not even bothering to air events. Now they are not even airing the Opening Ceremonies live? That’s ridiculous, it’s live in Canada. It starts in 10 minutes. Maybe you can find an online stream somewhere

  • http://www.facebook.com/webefree Mike FreiGeist Hoffmann

I´m almost shocked of how many are still not at all aware of what´s going on … happy awakenings! (;-)>>

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Saw this post last night! Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Wang/542480760 Maria Wang

Was that JKR who just read a quote? and oh look, there’s Voldemort! COOL

  • Nicole

It wasn’t as cheesy as i thought, such a great ceremony :D

  • Alexander

I thought this opening ceremony was oddif they are going to celebrate literature, I’m fine with the Alice and Wonderland and Mary Poppins but don’t understand celebrating JK Rowling’s but how do you skip the two people that invented the fantasy genre – Tolkien and CS Lewis?

  • Harry8Voldemort

When I saw it my first thought was “Voldemort has red eyes”
