You may’ve been surprised last week when Lionsgate announced the release dates for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. Now we’re starting to understand why: The studio is seeking directors for the final two parts.

Due to the pace at which they want to move with the creation of these films, Lionsgate won’t be selecting Francis Lawrence for either of the final two. They need a director to prep before Lawrence will be finished with Catching Fire.

Indiewire reports that Lionsgate and Summit chiefs as well as producer Nina Jacobson and author Suzanne Collins are actively searching for other directors. At this point we’re assuming that both parts of Mockingjay will be filmed back to back, as they are following the Twilight shooting schedule which took that path.

Do you have any picks for Mockingjay Part 1, Part 2, or both?

The films will be released November 2014 and 2015 respectively.

  • Samuel

I reckon this time they’ll get Alfonso Cuaron…

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       Oh dear god no

      • Abosuba

What’s wrong with you? Are you the official Alfonso Cuaron hater? Why are you posting in every comment supporting Cuaron? For a lot of people (me included) PoA is the BEST film in the HP series, so respect others opinion and deal with it.

I would love Alfonso for Mockinjay, even tho I’m halfway reading Catching Fire!

        • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

Completely agree! He always argues against people’s opinions but never gives reason as to why all our opinions are wrong compared to his…

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

and you give valid concrete reasons?  Harry Potter is not supposed to be hell on earth ready to swallow you whole.

          • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

Please tell me when I said that? And I don’t post rude comments on every post saying blahblahblah he sucks you’re wrong! I give my opinions and if I was to comment on someone’s opinion I would give reason as to why I think they’re wrong because I’m not a bigot.

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

well since you know so much about me you tell me what I have said

          • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

you have said on comments on this article (all concerning cuaron):
            “oh dear god no”
”are you kidding he destroyed Prisoner of azkaban”
“HARRY POTTER IS NOT SINISTOR AND DARK Oh cuaron did just that”
”and Prisoner of azkaban was the worst”
want me to continue? I said on my comment why I thought he’d be good for mockingjay and you come back with some smart ass comment, you don’t say anywhere in your comments why he “destroyed poa” so nice try bud

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

please continue!  yeah I did because his not a good director for Children of Men and Harry Potter

          • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

I really don’t care any more

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

Yeah proably!  Oh I know I know.  But they cant provide valid reasons why.

          • Morsmordre79

Just like you can’t provide valid reasons why you don’t like POA. It goes both ways sweetheart.

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

Well when I do sweetie you say it make sense like the whomping willow becoming an extra character in that film.  You or others will say it shows its changing seasons how does that help us understand thats changing when there are many others ways besides wasting time on the willow or perhaps the blue bird which in your eyes makes sense with it showing the changing of the seasons

          • Morsmordre79

For Kyle (since your comment oddly has no reply button) – The Whomping Willow wasn’t only about showing the change of seasons (though that, too, was important, seeing as it helped give the film a concrete sense of time.) It was used to foreshadow future events. As I’m sure you recall, the Willow was rather important to the plot, so focusing on it throughout the film gave the audience (particularly those who never read the book) the idea that it was going to be important. It’s more effective than not showing it at all until it’s actually time to go to the Shrieking Shack, then the audience ends of going “where the hell did this tree come from?” Yes, it appeared in COS, but seeing as the film industry caters to more than just die-hard fans of the books, they have to reintroduce things every once in a while.

The point is, the movie simply cannot be a carbon copy of the book. They’re two very different mediums and, much like varying languages, there’s no direct translation.

    Alfonso Cuaron.

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       HECK NO

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

    ALFONSO!!! holy crap

    • d3erudite

Noooo. He’s a great director but the thought of having a Harry potter director in mockingjay makes my blood boil

      • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

well it just that. he’s a great director. i am a hp fan, but i didnt really think abot it in terms of colliding fandoms.  i also like somone else’s idea above of JJ Abrams.

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

           No he isnt.

          • Morsmordre79

Why not? Give me one good reason why he isn’t a good director. (Note: “he destroyed Prisoner of Azkaban” isn’t a good reason unless you can back it up with evidence.)

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

I will give you several!  blue bird Umbrella Shurken heads everything was dark.  unnecessary scenes lines from the book and then extra lines that didnt make sense with I cant wait to walk the halls of hogwarts as a free man

        • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

He’s a great director! And while the third HP book isn’t my favorite, I love what he did with that film.

      • LilyLuna

I didn’t like what Alfonso did with PoA in particular, but I’m not going to judge a director based upon one film without even considering the others they’ve done.

And for the record I think they’d be lucky to have any director with a Potter movie in their resume. ;)

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

well those directors have destoryed Harry Potter

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       you got to be kidding

  • Matthewhpg

    Anyone but Michael Bay.

    • Morsmordre79

      I second that.

  • Kyle Ellison

    This is a joke, right?

  • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

This is great news IMO. three different books deserve three different directors, so each film has their own look and feel like the books did. I hope they don’t just choose anyone, they don’t need to rush this. Alfonso is a great pick, hopefully he’d like to come on board.

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       Oh please no!

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I agree! All the books to me feel different. It would almost be as if there were three different game makers. I think this is not a bad thing at all :)

  • Gary65

Not even a single image of CF has been shot yet and we’re back to this already? Ugh

    • Savanah

Well, I think that is a great time for them to be looking ahead. Francis and his crew can be working on CF while others can be working on getting people for MJ. I think what they mainly need to do is get a great screenwriter that can work out these amazing new scenes and fit them into the ones from the book. I would rather have them working on the prep for MJ now until after CF, especially considering there are two movies. Everything would be way too rushed.

      I’d consider this a blessing.

      • Gary65

Still, they couldn’t have left it a month longer. The first MJ isn’t out for 2.5 years.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyecstasyTM Emily Bryan

I like the fact they’re using different directors after all, I think I wasn’t so sure at the beginning. They will be different and that’s cool. I have to agree with some of the first posts, I’d LOVE to see Alfonso Cuaron take on Mockingjay! I loved what he did with Prisoner of Azkaban.

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

are you kidding he destroyed Prisoner of azkaban

      • Morsmordre79

Why yes, let’s judge a director based on ONE film he’s done. -_-

Watch Children of Men, Great Expectations, and A Little Princess, and then come back and tell me Cuaron isn’t a visionary director.

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

You still following and stalking! I see!  Well I did see Children of Men and hated it.  So thats TWO films I watched of his

          • Morsmordre79

Again, that’s your opinion. And I’m sorry to tell you but you’re in the minority. I’ve never come across one person (until now, obviously) who “hated” Children of Men. They may not have necessarily *loved* it, but they at least acknowledged that it was a decent film. A 8.0 on IMDb and a (3% on the tomatometer back that up. Then there was that whole being nominated for 3 Oscars thing. Most would agree that being recognized at the Academy Awards is kind of a big deal.

And what do you mean, stalking? I replied to your comment. If replying to a comment is stalking, you’ve been stalking pretty much everyone who’s posted on this article.

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

You have been following me since the Potter boards.  Yeah right.  But when Narnia wins an oscar its still considered a bad film from the Potter heads!  Which NONE Of the films have won an oscar.

          • Morsmordre79

Kyle: Ha, don’t flatter yourself. If I ever do decide to stalk someone online, it’s going to be someone who goes into fandom with an open mind and is willing to listen to and consider the opinions of others without throwing a tantrum (i.e., not you.)

And please, do tell me where these Potter boards are that I’ve supposedly been on. The only Potter boards I’m ever on are on the fanfic sites, and unless you have another username, I don’t ever recall seeing you there. (Not to mention, my username is different there, too, so even if I *was* stalking you, how would you know that unless you were stalking me too? I win. XD)Way to generalize, by the way. I actually liked the first Narnia film. The second and third…meh. They could have been better, could have been worse. I still think they should have done the whole series and began with the Magician’s Nephew, but whatever. What’s done is done.

Guess I’ll just get back to replying to others’ comments. (Whoops, I mean “stalking.” Yes, must get back to my stalking. *cackles*)

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       what about Peter Jackson

      • Potterhead667

He reminds me too much of Guillermo del Toro

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

           wouldnt that be jackson>

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

His style is not what I think of for this series. Too seek and almost Spielberg-y (no doubt, he is him idol).

Although, he’s a fantastic director and if somehow the project landed on him I wouldn’t complain! :p

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

Kathryn Bigelow! I would love to see a woman take on the role as the director for one of the Hunger Games movies.

    • d3erudite

      She would be so good!

      • Potterhead667

        like Sofia Coppola?

  • applepie

I just hope this doesn’t turn out like the Harry Potter films… :/

    • Bernardotriana

what do you mean ”like the harry potter films… :/” ???are you saying that the Harry Potter films are bad???
-Harry potter best franchise up to date

are you kidding Bernard to date it sucks ass

        • Zack

You are pretty much part of the 10% that thinks that. No need to be so rude, either.

But whatever you say, because you know it all…

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

No I dont know all.  Oh I know since we needed the unnecessary things in the Prisoner of Azkaban

          • Morsmordre79

Why yes, because the random waitress and the burning of the Burrow were completely necessary to the plot of Half-Blood Prince.

Seriously, POA wasn’t the only one of the HP films to have stuff added to it. Get over yourself.

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

well I hated that too Morsmordre!  I was just resigned how god awful Yates would do this films and he would think he has done them justice

      • applepie

Not at all! I’m a huge Potterhead. I just don’t like how all the movies had a different feel to them because they all had different directors.

    • Bernardotriana

ohhh i got you hahah sorry you meant tht you hope that they should not change the directors like in  the harry potter films

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

yeah but Micheal Bay was just too camara movement or the director who did the first film

    • LilyLuna

I dunno, they did catch their stride eventually. David Yates was on for four movies. And stylistically, I thought Goblet of Fire fits in well with 5-8. So yes, it was a bit rough in the beginning, but I think it worked out well in the end.

  • http://twitter.com/iamboobs Yasemin Turner

Maybe Gary Ross will come back? I mean he has a better time scale now so….

    • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

      hopefully not

  • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

I think Alfonso Cuaron would do really well with the darker plot of Mockingjay. He really changed the HP series from the friendly kid series to a more sinister and serious franchise. Hopefully whoever they choose will not destroy the book!

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

HARRY POTTER IS NOT SINISTOR AND DARK Oh cuaron did just that!

      • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

        Cool

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

yeah aftere Cuaron you have to read the books to see how wonderful potter is

          • LilyLuna

Two Words: Deathly Hallows, if that final part isn’t the most amazingly epic display of just how wonderful Potter is, then I don’t know what is, but it sure as hell isn’t Prisoner of Azkaban.

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

the books were great the films were crap

      • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

I think Harry Potter gets darker as the books go along and Azkaban is where that begins

        • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

Exactly my point! And the definition of sinister is that something evil or wicked is happening….yes clearly nothing evil happens in Harry Potter……

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

If Siruis was sinister why did they become FRIENDS! Clearly every about Harry Potter is all dark and there is nothing good about Harry Potter clearly!

          • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

that didn’t make any sense but k

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

How was Prisoner of Azkaban sinister?  When Siruis was Harry Godfather?  When he was framed for murder?

          • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

The fact that there is a supposed murderer on the lose who worked with voldy and now that peter pettigrew is returning to help voldy is sinister! I never said it’s the most sinister movie, it’s when the series turns into a more sinister plot because it’s coming up to the rise of voldemort. I’m done arguing this with you because you’re just going to keep arguing with me so stop replying because I don’t care

          • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

an escaped mass murderer, creatures that feed on despair and drain your soul, the execution of an innocent animal, a death omen – how is that NOT sinister?

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

well then stop talking to me!  as such We know from the first two films and books not all things are as the appear!  Thats what makes better so great or made it great

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

the books were always dark and always light and in the Prisoner where it started thats where they forget the LIGHT!

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

a mass murderer?  So Siruis did kill all those innonecent people?  did we read two different books then? Oh Dementors can but what can defeat them?  Oh yeah and look how sinister the death omen WAS?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

    CHRISTOPHER NOLAN! :D. . .  .enough said. . .

       Or peter Jackson

  • bethanny23

Seriously? I hate when they change the directors for movie series. Every director has his/her own style, and then movies don’t flow together well. I really hope this doesn’t happen with this franchise…

    • Morsmordre79

Which Pirates director, just out of curiosity?

  • Zack

Do I even need to say this? GARY ROSS!

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Is this really a surprise? There are very few directors who want the task of a franchise in it entirety. It’s a lot of work, and doesn’t give time for other projects. I’m just glad they know this now, and not only a few months before shooting! So they can look for a while.

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

well give the directors control and they will do it

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

Yes it is a surprise sometimes because if you dont have the same director things change

  • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

I agree with others. Bring Gary Ross back! ^^

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

only if he stops moving the friggen camara

      • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

        Yeah, there is that… :/

  • Paulinekhan

I don’t care as long it’s true to the books but I would absolulty hate different directors for part 1 and 2

  • https://twitter.com/#!/MaireadNguyen Mairead Nguyen

I really do think Afonso Cuaron can do it. he had ONE bad movie; that doesn’t mean he’s that bad of a director.  (and once again, Mockingjay really does not need to be in two parts…)

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

and Prisoner of azkaban was the worst

      • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

I dunno I think Goblet of Fire was a worse movie

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

yeah that was a terriable movie too

      • https://twitter.com/#!/MaireadNguyen Mairead Nguyen

out of how many movies has he done? he is still a great director.  and yes, we all know that PoA was the worse of the HP saga, so you can stop saying that on EVERY post that people have said Afonso Cuaron.

  • http://twitter.com/_psully Pat Sullivan

Christopher Nolan just finished up the Dark Knight trilogy.

    JUST SAYIN’

    • Morsmordre79

I’d be on board with this especially if he carried over his “I hate 3D” trademark. ‘Cause really, the last thing I want them to do for Mockingjay is to sacrifice quality to make certain scenes more 3D friendly.

  • Teranel

    1) Gary Ross
in no particular order: Peter Jackson, Joss Whedon, Joe Wright, Brian Percival

I have to wonder though if Francis Lawrence might have been a better choice for Mockingjay, considering I Am Legend…

    • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

Its moments like this that I’m proud of Peter Jackson and being a New Zealander, just to see a director from our little country up there makes me happy :)

HAHA it wouldnt be life without it

  • Guest

I just really hope they don’t pick two different directors for two halves of one story. I can’t see that working out too well.

Also, If they go with Cuaron, after what he did to Prisoner of Azkaban, my expectations will be significantly lowered. Maybe it’s a “good” movie from a cinematic standpoint or something if you haven’t read the book, but the way they butchered the plot, characters, and setting–and establishing a trend in doing that to Harry Potter–made me a little sick.

Ever since I was very young though, I’ve loved “A Little Princess”. Of course, I never read that book, and a quick Google search will tell you that it looks like significant changes have been made to that story’s plot, characters, and setting as well! Perhaps book-to-film adaptations just aren’t his forte.

I’m not going to go around claiming to boycott the movie if he’s picked or anything, of course I’d still see it. I would just be scared instead of excited.

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

thats why I hope for a reboot in a couple of years of Harry Potter/  NO I was resigned about the Potter films.  When Cuaron it was all over.  fanatical fans were saying FINALLY a dark Harry Potter film turn the lights off and its dark

    • MidnightSpirit

I can’t stand watching PoA for that reason. Of all the directors, he was my least favorite for the HP movie series. Ugh.

  • EmmaMills

    Joss FREAKIN’ Whedon!!!

  • 7Starrchasers

    Dare i say it…Joss Whedon?

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

       maybe

  • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

Gary Ross’ only problem with directing Catching Fire was time issues, I’m hoping he can come back for both parts of Mockingjay, but knowing my luck Lionsgate won’t even consider that. We know the cast and crew would welcome him back with open arms, judging from their reactions when he stepped doing from Catching Fire

    • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

but gary ross kept moving the camara and it was like keep the camara STILL

      • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

People need to get over that, he did it for a reason. Since people won’t stop complaining about it months after he probably won’t do it again either

        • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

You need to realize directors do the same camara tricks all the time and moving the camara does not help the story

          • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

The shaky camera wasn’t for story purposes. It was to dull down the violence and as an artist move. I realize how directors work too thanks, just because they used an effect such as shaky cam in one movie does not guarantee they will use it again. Especially after the number of people that gave it negative critique (as I said)

          • http://twitter.com/Goslingsawagrin Kyle Jung Mun Lim

You can dull down the violence with out the shaky cam.  As such he never used he shaky cam for the violent shots anyway.  Oh I know and directors still use it.  Well it seems to me now in days its all the rage!

He used the shaky cam through MANY violence shots – it was pretty obvious in the blood bath in the beginning, and yes there are other options but that was the one he choose. He used it in running shots to I guess, but again that is an effect to create an impression of running. Like I said, people should get over it. I’d rather he used shaky cam than cut or trim various scenes due to violence.

I would really like to see Chris Weitz helm Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2! He added a creative and artistic touch to New Moon that I would love to see in the final 2 Hunger Games Saga installments.

Another great choice would be Christopher Nolan or bringing back Gary Ross

Also I would like to see Alexandre Desplat score Catching Fire or Mockingjay! He is the best composer of our age, and his music would fit perfect with either of those!

      No we need John Williams

    Accio Gary Ross!

I think would think that the 2nd film should be finished before they make BIG decisions like these. Honesty, they have not even finish casting for the second film, and they already decided that Lawrence would not be filming the 3rd and 4th. They haven’t even seen what he brings to the series! Are they saying that he is not good enough to film more movies? Is he even good enough to film Catching Fire!?!

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, Joss Whedon, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Frank Darabont, or David Fincher!

Given how great and dark “Pan’s Labyrinth” was in respect to the theme of war and loss, I would also DEFINITELY want to see Guillermo del Toro considered for Mockingjay.

Oh please we need a director that understand the material jackson would make a excellent director

I would absolutely love it if he got the job. He’s fantastic. He’s got a lot of projects coming up, though, so it probably won’t happen. :(  Wasn’t he supposed to be doing a Beauty and the Beast film at some point, too?

I honestly can’t say I’m surprised. I mean, aside from LOTR (because they were filmed all together) and Star Wars (because those are practically George Lucas’ children,) a fair few of the recent major film franchises had at least two directors. Some that spring to mind are:

    Potter: 8 films, 4 directorsNarnia: 3 films, 2 directorsPirates: 4 films, 2 directorsTwilight: 5 films, 4 directors…I think? Not a fan so correct me if I’m wrong.
Shrek: 4 films, 3 directors (4, actually, because there were 2 for I think the third one)

For the most part, all of these franchises were good for what they were*, regardless of the varying directors. None were perfect and they all had their hiccups here and there, but looking at the big picture, they all* entertained both the majority of their fanbases and casual moviegoers alike, meaning they succeeded in what they were meant to do. And now we’ll add The Hunger Games franchise to this list. It will end with 4 films and at least 3 directors, and I’m not worried about that one bit**.

*Disclaimer number 1: I am not a fan of Twilight and ceased watching the films after New Moon. I included it on this list because, fan or not, it is a recent major franchise, and I like to assume that its fans enjoy the films.

**Disclaimer number 2: This statement is null and void if Michael Bay is selected as director. Should this event occur, I will promptly curl up into the fetal position and cry until I dehydrate, if that’s even possible.

Aaaaaand my movie list got jumbled. Awesome. -_-

      Here’s the not-sloppy-copy of it:

      Potter: 8 films, 4 directors

      Narnia: 3 films, 2 directors

      Pirates: 4 films, 2 directors

Twilight: 5 films, 4 directors…I think? Not a fan so correct me if I’m wrong.

Shrek: 4 films, 3 directors (4, actually, because there were 2 for I think the third one)

Wait– they’re splitting Mockingjay into two parts? Everyone’s doing this now…

I still want Francis Lawrence to direct Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. Why do you ask? He made Catching Fire cooler than Ross’ work in The Hunger Games. Yes, I may have not see the movie yet, but have you seen the trailer? Like, OMFG. It’s so cool! So, that’s why I want Francis Lawrence to still direct Mockingjay Part 1 and 2.
