Over the past few years Pixar has been very interested in sequel development – Toy Story 3 , Cars 2, Monsters University to name a few – and today we’re learning they’re moving forward with a Finding Nemo sequel.

2003′s Finding Nemo was directed by Andrew Stanton, and he is set to return. Deadline reports that he “has a concept the studio loves.” Stanton most recently wrote and directed Wall-E for Pixar and John Carter for Disney.

Pixar’s slate for the next few years is booked up, so we may not see Nemo 2 earlier than 2016. Monsters University is due out in 2013, The Good Dinosaur in 2014, a “movie that takes you inside your mind” in 2015, and Dia de los Muertos in 2015.

Meanwhile, Finding Nemo will be re-released in theaters in 3D on September 14.

Is Pixar right to move forward with a sequel to the lovable fish tale?

    YESSSSSS!

Ellen DeGeneres is going to be so happy.

    • Jeff Dodge

Yeah she’s going to be. Over the past several years on her show, Ellen has constantly criticized (in a joking way, of course) Pixar for not making a Finding Nemo sequel when many of their other movies have gotten sequels.

    • Claire

I was going to say the same thing! I can’t wait for her reaction if and when this becomes official! :)

I think I’ve had enough of the ‘teenager gone wild’ movies. However, if Pixar likes Andrew Stanton’s idea, then it will be worth watching.

I’m nervous. If this goes the way of Toy Story 2 and 3, I’ll be super excited. But if this goes the way of Cars 2, I’ll be extremely disappointed.

  • http://www.rebellionradiopodcast.com Hurley

Sometimes I just wish just they made a couple more originals for a while before coming back to sequels.

    • http://www.facebook.com/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Trent Taylor

Did you even read the post? In clearly showed 3 originals after Monster’s University before Nemo.

Finally! I have waited soooo long!!!!!!!

    FISH ARE FRIENDS, NOT FOOD.

  • Hermione Granger

NO NO NO NO!! I was just expressing how completely happy I was that my FAVORITE animated movie didn’t succumb to the idiocy that is sequel-making. The story was done, finished, perfect, goddammit. Why do they have to be so greedy? Can’t they just leave it alone and be happy?

    • http://www.facebook.com/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Trent Taylor

Since when is sequel making greedy? It’s just less risky. Greedy is tagging on a cheap 3D conversion to a movie at release, rather than have the integrity to spend 6 to 9 months to convert it like you need.

      • Hermione Granger

Greedy, because they don’t do it to make a good movie (i.e. Shrek, Pirates of the Caribbean) they do it because they KNOW people will go to see it and it will make a LOT Of money. Sequels are generally really poorly rated, except for Toy Story of course. But Nemo’s story is told. Trying to drag up some type of storyline just ruins the magic of the original.

        • Plat

It will probably be about them trying to find Dory’s family. And last time I checked, movie making is a business. If they don’t make money, its not a success. So adding on to a story that fans know and love is less risky than making something new that people aren’t sure of.

        • Kat

You just listed two movies that were not Pixar. Shrek was Dreamworks (and was done to DEATH I agree) and PotC, while done by Disney, it entirely Disney’s. I am also sick of the business making sequels for the sake of making sequels, but I do have great faith that they will do this film justice. Look at Toy Story for heaven’s sake! I would argue the third film in that trilogy was the best one!

  • Andrew_ww

Why?!? The story was told. It had better be amazingly good. Its so rare to find a great, original film anymore and that is what Pixar should focus on.

  • Anna-FilmGirl

    NO NO NO.
I love Finding Nemo. As far as I’m concerned, it’s without a doubt Pixar’s greatest film alongside Wall-E when you combine characters, acting, script, visuals, sound etc. It really is a phenomenally beautiful film that teaches great messages and entertains you the whole way through—but it ended. They found Nemo. The story concluded where it was always meant to, and to continue that would, I’m scared, lessen the integrity of the original. I’ll probably end up watching the sequel just for Ellen deGeneres as Dory, but this really is a bad idea. I’m really disappointed in Pixar lately.

  • applepie

First Monster’s Inc. and now this?!?! It’s too good to be true! I just hope they don’t ruin such a classic movie. I have faith in you Pixar!

  • goldensnidget

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…
As long as Dori’s in it, I’m happy

  • Glaciusx

Are you serious?! I think it’s time to call child services on Marlin. STOP LOSING NEMO.

  • http://twitter.com/TheRotoscopers The Rotoscopers

This may be Pixar’s attempt to save Stanton after the tremendous flop that was John Carter (though that wasn’t really his fault. We can blame Disney for poor marketing of the film).

Finding Nemo was excellent, but I want to see more original Pixar films.

  • http://www.twitter.com/morganstradling Morgan Burt Stradling

I’m not terribly excited for this. Don’t get me wrong, I love Finding Nemo, but its story has been told.

Pixar is known for not even CONSIDERING making a sequel unless it has a good story–so hopefully that is credit to Stanton. But ever since Pixar was acquired by Disney, there have been less original films and more sequels. Now we’ll more likely see less original films like Ratatouile, Wall-E and UP because sequels will be clogging Pixar’s pipeline. :(

    Gotta please those shareholders….

    • Kate

Yes, there are sequels (thus far only two released since Disney acquired it, with Monster University set to be released and now POSSIBLY a Finding Nemo sequel), but it’s not as if they don’t have any originals planned. They just released Brave and have three more originals in the works. So there you go; they seem to be keeping it fairly balanced.

      • http://www.twitter.com/morganstradling Morgan Burt Stradling

True, true about the originals currently planned.

I think that Cars 2 put a bad taste in everyone’s mouth about Pixar’s sequels that we’ve forgotten how EPIC and INCREDIBLE Toy Story 2 and 3 were! We need to put our faith in Pixar that Finding Nemo 2 will be the caliber of the Toy Story series and not the Cars franchise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Trent Taylor

Oh Dory, how I love you. You’re the Derpy of Pixar, right down to the bubbles.

  • Madge

Can everyone who is freaking out over the sequels and screaming “NO THIS WILL RUIN EVERYTHING DARN IT, DISNEY/PIXAR, WHY DO YOU DO THIS?!” realize that it has been nearly ten years since Finding Nemo was originally released in theaters?  If a company takes that long to continue the story, you better be dang sure they know what they’re doing.  For the most part, Pixar is very good at not topping pigs with pigs (to lovingly toss in a plug to listen to The Rotoscopers and their fantastic discussion on sequels), except for Cars, but let’s not think about that, shall we?  And if they’re not releasing a sequel until at least 2016, they have the time to get it right.  But Morgan Stradling has a point.  It’s more likely we’ll be seeing sequels in the future because the shareholders want more success, and what better way to do that than with sequels?  Sequels might actually look like a safer route for the company after the reaction to Brave.
Nevertheless! I am excited for the sequel to Finding Nemo!

    • http://twitter.com/TheRotoscopers The Rotoscopers

Thanks for the shout out! ;) Episode 11 is a GREAT episode. And I love that Walt quote, ” You can’t beat pigs with pigs.”

I think this has something to do that Brave is currently (and surprisingly) Pixar’s least commercially successful film (yes, I know it’s still in theatres and has yet to open in many international markets, but it’s still $120 million below the 2nd lowest). :( I think there may have been Disney pressure here to do this.
THAT being said, I am actually excited for this film–if they can get the story right. I’d hate to see a Cars 2, but then again, are we forgetting how wonderful Toy Story 2 AND 3 were? I think Cars 2 has just put a temporary bad taste in everyone’s mouth for Pixar sequels. I do have hope in Pixar.

Plus, there are SO many fans of this film that have been waiting a decade for this news!
      Morgan

      • Madge

Exactly! Toy Story 2 and 3 were fantastic and wonderfully done sequels!  They had great stories to them along with amazing animation!  I think Finding Nemo 2 definitely has that potential to create an amazing sequel, but it also has the potential to slip into Cars 2 territory–which, admittedly, fills me with a teeny bit of dread.

My friends and I are huge fans of Finding Nemo ourselves (we quote Dory on a weekly basis) and have been waiting for news like this for ages, as have some celebrities (cough Ellen Degeneres cough).

Also, I had a mini-flail-attack when you replied, but that’s unrelated.

        • Guest

A mini flail attack like this? ;)

          • Madge

            Pretty much! :D

Oh neat! MAybe finding dorys family or something? Ha.

  • http://twitter.com/noesunacuenta Braulio is :O

For a studio that it’s third movie was a sequel… people tend to make such a big fuss about sequels… 18 movies (counting finding nemo 2) and only 5 sequels… really?? don’t be such a cry baby, nobody will mess up your memories! Pixar still is a great studio. Don’t want a sequel? easy.. don’t watch it!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Wang/542480760 Maria Wang

    YAAAY I love Fining Nemo!!

  • Josiah27

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I love Nemo and one of the things that’s kept it so awesome is that it’s been a stand-alone that’s worked fantastically. They don’t n e e d a sequel. A sequel would do more harm than good for the Nemo universe (in my opinion). Ever since Cars 2, Pixar’s been disappointing me

    • http://oodlesofglutenfreenoodles.tumblr.com/ Madame Mustachio

      /high five
Honestly. Leave all the endless, dry sequels to Dreamworks. (No offense if anyone reading this likes DW, but, admit it, THEY NEED TO STOP. Do we honestly need that much Madagascar or Shrek?) I understand that if a series makes money, it would make sense financially to continue that series. But, I dunno, maybe I’m just optimistic, but I’d rather see originality and movies produced with love instead of just for money, you know?
But really, in my opinion, all of the Pixar movies are awesome on their own, and to add more to a story that already has all the loose ends tied up, I dunno, I guess it would just make the sequels feel forced.
That said, I’m basically excited for anything Pixar makes. (Still, I didn’t really enjoy Cars, so I didn’t even bother seeing Cars 2. Take that, Pixar, that’s one less box office sale. >:D)

  • Meur123

I don’t really care for thia. Finding Nemo was a good film, but it didn’t really leave as much of an impression on me as Toy Story, Up, Ratatouille, Wall-e, and Monsters Inc. It also doesn’t really need a sequel that much.

If Pixar really wanted to make an awesome sequel then please, please, make Incredibles 2.

  • Kyle Ellison

If it is done right it will awesome. The first was great. I put my full faith that the Pixar team will do well with this movie!

  • tG

oh NO. Bad idea. They better not botch this up.

  • http://www.korracast.com/ Fravit

    ehh…

  • Adam

Darren Criss was right!!!! No wonder why he’s Harry Freakin’ Potter!

  • bethanny23

As long as Dori is in it, voiced by Ellen, Im in! :)

  • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

A sequel? I would prefer a prequel. Like Dory’s childhood, that would be amazeballs.

    • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

they could always have Dory’s childhood play a role in the sequel in flashbacks or in some other way

      • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

        That would be good!

        • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

I want to know what happened to her memory – I think she went through some sort of trauma like Marlin did

          • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

No, I think it’s just because she’s a fish. Like goldfish are meant to have a 10 second memory (or something like that).

  • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

YES THANK YOU! FINALLY!!! Dear lord please feature Dory heavily

  • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

The only Pixar/Disney sequels that I enjoyed we’re the Toy Story ones. Hopefully, unlike most sequels, this one will be a good one if it is made!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1306356920 Kevin Ryan

I Agree, I just said that same thing the other day. The only Disney/Pixar Sequels I’ve actually liked were Toy Stories.

  • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

Just read somewhere else that Toy Story 4 is being made too…not sure if this is true though

    • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

      NOOOOOO! It better not be.

      • http://twitter.com/ceilidh_brenzzz Ceilidh Brennan

Yeah I hope not as well! They finished off the story and I think another movie would be purely for the money, not the fans

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=33411927 Ashleigh Morgan

Ellen has been asking for a sequel for YEARS so you can bet Dory will be in it!

  • Lupin

Am I the only one out there that dislikes Finding Nemo?

    • Leigh

      yes

    • Andromeda

If I’d read this last week I would’ve totally agreed with you, but I saw it again recently and have no idea how I ever didn’t like it.

So I kind of get where you’re coming from.

    • Voldy

      Unfortunately.

  • Leigh

Maybe we’ll find out how all of those fish tank fish got out of their plastic bags

  • http://twitter.com/taylie27 Taylore Thompson

Pumped for Nemo 2! But has anyone heard anything about this Toy Story 4 rumor that’s spreading around twitter??

    • Kyle Ellison

Yea, I saw that too. I don’t think it’s credible though.

    • fruttivendolo

That rumor went around a while ago- Tom Hanks said he had heard about a continuation of Toy Story, and the rumors spread from there. Pixar recently announced that Pixar Canada is doing a series of 22-minute Toy Story specials that will air on Disney Channel in 2013 and 2014. I’m sure that Hanks was referring to those. So as of now, no, there’s no TS4. I’m happier with this format- this way we can still see the characters a bit without having a whole film. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to see a full film because I really don’t think it’s necessary. The ending of TS3 was beautiful and I think another film would just spoil that.

  • DreamNox58

I will only watch this if Ellen is playing Dory and if Dory is in it.  Other than that….no good.  I love the Finding Nemo movie though, everyone seems to pretty much.

  • fruttivendolo

This may not be true! Andrew Stanton tweeted this several hours ago:
“Didn’t you all learn from Chicken Little? Everyone calm down. Don’t believe everything you read. Nothing to see here now. #skyisnotfalling.”

It sounds like Nemo 2 isn’t happening. Then again, it’s also possible that Pixar just doesn’t want to confirm anything at this point.

  • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

    I shall call this squishy

  • Hellmark

I really hope that they don’t. Part of what I like about Pixar is that they come up with new original content, and show it in a fresh way. Unfortunately, now that they’re officially part of the Mouse, who is a giant sequel whore, that may now be changing (Cars 2 anyone?)

  • https://twitter.com/#!/MaireadNguyen Mairead Nguyen

    SHARKBAIT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=690341156 Andrew Davies-Land

      HOO HA HA!

  • laura

sigh. i probably will watch this regardless, but i agree… pixar needs to lay off the sequels and just tell great original stories!

  • Voldy

I think it would be interesting if not all the eggs were eaten by the barracuda and one is still out there besides Nemo, and they’ll find him. lol Or there’ll be a backstory about Dory and her past and she’ll finally remember everything. Just maybe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=690341156 Andrew Davies-Land

me and my friends have always said for years that the sequel should revolve around Dory and her finding her family.

  • VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy! Yaayyy! I feel like I’m five again! :)
