Hypable

Today Hypable participated in roundtables with the cast of Fox’s Glee! The cast and crew happily spilled new information about the upcoming fourth season.

Lea Michele, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, and show writer Ian Brennan spoke with Hypable about what’s to come in season 4. Darren Criss and Cory Montieth were also present for press, but the latter suffered a “tooth ache” halfway through his rounds and Criss simply ran out of time before the fan panel.

To get this information to you as quickly as possible, we’re providing our notes in list format.

Ian Brennan
- All our cast back. We’re going to be in New York for a lot of the time.
- New York/Ohio time split that you see on the show will be similar to how the McKinley/Dalton time split was.
- Santana “might be” in New York. Michele later told us she really hoped Santana will (see below).
- Through writing of third episode of season four right now.
- Rachel will be in every episode. “It’ll be so good to see Rachel in college.”
- Finn is trying to deal with Rachel gone.
- Decision on breaking them up in finale: We talked about it a lot, but that wasn’t originally how that story was going to end. It was a much much longer, complex story. In the end, it just felt right to do at this point. Rachel will really be struggling in the new season with a new life. “I’ve moved there once myself, it’s a very scary experience. It’s a whole different kind of storytelling.”
- Rachel will be in contact with McKinley almost to a funny point.
- We’ll see footage of Mercedes in Los Angeles or making her way there. “How it sort of happens for her is interesting.”
- New characters: Jake is a bad boy who sorta just appears in the school. Kate Hudson will play a character who is Rachel’s dance teacher. It’s a really funny, eccentric character that’ll allow Kate to sing and dance. She’s got an amazing voice you haven’t heard in a while.
- We asked Ian what other artists we can expect. “There’s an artist big enough who will take two episodes because the music catalogue is so big. That’s how large the person is. It’s a man.”

Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale
- What stories can we expect to hear in Jenna’s Glee book: Book follows her from childhood to where she is now. Big theme in the story will be positivity and making that choice every day. Quotes from Glee cast and what their secret to happiness is. Also follows Glee tour, being on set, how we’re great friends.
- How they each see their characters evolving: Kevin – it’s an opportunity for them to step up. This season will be us stepping up like the seniors did last season.
- Jenna: Last year we saw Tina be one of the female voices.
- Kevin: Wants to perform “Let It Be,” Jenna: Sara Bareilles or Demi Lovato.
- Jenna found out recently, when the press found out, that everyone was returning for season 4. Kevin had a feeling everyone would be back in some capacity.
- Kevin sees Artie going into more of the behind the scenes aspect of the performing arts in the future.
- Kevin hopes there’s going to be romance for Artie coming up. Really thought he’d get Sugar, then he did not. Jenna thinks Tina will stay with Mike.
- On not seeing the same cast every day: It’s definitely going to be different. It’s fun going in not knowing. Three seasons of having the same routine, so it’s nice to have a new take on the show.
- Kevin would love to be in Game of Thrones, Jenna would love to be in Breaking Bad, Dexter, Homeland. Kevin will gladly put on an accent, get killed, whatever it takes to be in Thrones.
- Favorite song from series they performed: “Scream” and “Shake It Out.”

Lea Michele
- “I think Rachel works best when she’s against all odds. She has to fight her way through something is when she rises to the top. Starting at the beginning of season four she’s very alone, but it’ll get her to a very great place.”
- “We have a good idea of where Finn and Rachel are going. We want to see what it’s like for them to be apart for a while now. I think that’s the dynamic we’ve seen over the series where we pull them apart, put them back together, etc. They will always be involved with one another whether or not they’re dating. They’ll be in contact.”
- Lea thinks it’ll be different being all apart for this upcoming season for the first time. “There were so many of us by the end. About 20 in the choir room. Now Rachel will be in one location, the other characters will be elsewhere. We won’t be shooting together as much but we can’t stay away from one another for long.”
- “It’s really exciting. It’s a challenge I’m excited to take on. The fans will be excited to see Rachel in college. I think she won’t be alone for long – she’ll be surrounded by familiar faces soon.”
- Rachel has a challenging dynamic with Kate Hudson, who stars in the first few episodes.
- Lea and Naya have been campaigning for Rachel and Santana to go to school together, and “I really hope and think that will happen.”
- On the wide range of music she sings for the show: “I know the first episode I’ll do classy and the next one I’ll be doing super pop. I love how in one episode I can sing a Broadway standard and then the next do “Push It” by Salt-n-Pepa.”

I may be completely alone in this (and I may be completely bypassing the point of this article), but I can’t stand Kate Hudson and am dreading her Glee debut.

  • Guest

Clearly the show revolves around Lea Michele/Rachel Berry. Come on, Glee! She’s graduated; it’s time to move on.

  • Jess

I wish they would just move on from Rachel Berry, I have a feeling this show is going to end after this season unless they pull of something great.

  • Heath

So… How is splitting time between the school and the graduating class revolutionary or unique? Sigh! More Ryan Murphy lies

    • jozefd14

we’ll just have to wait and see and then judge and then see all the judging happening on all the social networking sites most importantly TUMBLR =D

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

They need to bring back Mark Salling full-time. Puck. Mark is a great actor and want to see more of Puck.

  • Jaclyn

I have a feeling that unless they make big changes, Glee will be a sort of “Degrassi the Musical” for FOX.  It’ll end up being a constant rotation of characters, unless they do what it looks like they’re doing, which is following the characters outside of high school.  But that could get very messy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=71003843 Bridget Girton

Rachel in EVERY episode?  I’m not surprised.  I’m sick of this being The Rachel And Finn Show.  With Darren, Kevin, Jenna, and Chord still at McKinley, do we still need to make Lea the star of the show?  I would be glad to see her take a smaller role.  She graduated, after all.  Fewer solos to her this season, PLEASE.  What about Chris Colfer?  He got shafted in season 3.  If the writers don’t redeem themselves for that this season, I think I might be done.

  • Ritchie

More than likely, this is going to turn into a hot mess. I mean, I knew they had to update on the graduating characters every once in awhile, especially after how they left it, but is it really necessary for it to continue on being the Rachel Berry Show?? The show is called, “Glee” as in it revolves around a glee club. These people are no longer in it, so why are they a main focus? Ultimately, I wouldn’t mind seeing new faces if it meant more time at McKinley rather than New York or wherever the hell they plan on taking us…Come on, Ryan Murphy! The Glee Project has a lot of talent, they can be a huge part to this show and contribute something new. I hate to say it, but Lea has had enough air-time. She’s been the main focus since day one, even though the show is supposed to revolve around so many others. I call nepotism on Ryan Murphy’s part.

On a lighter note, I want to know who this “Jake” character is.

    • alexacadia

crossing my fingers that it’s Blake or Abraham from the glee project :)

  • Finchel forever <3

Really people? What’s wrong with Lea and Cory being in the show still? People love them! I love them they are my favorite and I would be devastated if they were not in it anymore! It’s not like they are going to be in every episode either! They are following other characters to College and stuff and they have a whole new cast coming in for New Directions. The show would probably lose more viewers if they left the show because they are what makes Glee so awesome!! They are amazingly talented people and if you can’t see that i’m sorry to say it there is something wrong with you. Lay off haters.

    • Guest

Don’t get me wrong, I love Lea and Cory. But I think the Glee writers need to get their priorities straight. The show is supposed to be about the club itself, not just Lea. I left out Cory in the last sentence, because it seems like most people do not like the whole New York/McKinley time split thing (aka Rachel Berry/New Directions). I do agree that there is nothing with them or any of the other “graduated” cast to not be in the show. However, it’s been said that Lea/Rachel will be in EVERY episode. Don’t you think that is a little too much? What about the others? I, honestly, believe they deserve just as much time on the screen as Lea.
I agree with your statement about viewers leaving the show if the “graduated” cast wasn’t around. We all want to know what’s going on with them. But it seems like the only thing that they’ve actually spent a ton of time on is Lea’s role/Rachel’s story. We’ve only heard whispers about Finn, Santana, and Mercedes. Well, what about them? And what about those who weren’t even mentioned? It seems a bit unfair to single out Rachel Berry specifically when most fans, I’m sure, would rather see what is happening with Finn, Kurt, Mercedes, Mike, Puck, Quinn, and Santana.

Just because you might love them doesn’t mean everyone else does. I don’t give a flying flip about Rachel or Finn. They are my LEAST FAVORITE characters on Glee. I dislike every moment I have them on my screen. I’d be fine with them popping up occasionally, but I enjoy this show being about a GLEE CLUB because it is called Glee. I don’t need Rachel Berry in every episode. At all. And that might just be what pushes me over the edge to abandon this show.

But Lea and Cory? I have nothing against them. They’re cute. Super sweet in interviews. Finn and Rachel? Nope. Not the slightest bit of love for them.

      • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

I agree with you, that Finn and Rachel are annoying, but do you not remember the pilot episode? Rachel is the main character, so naturally, she HAS to be in every episode. That would be like Dexter without Dexter, or Legend of Korra without Korra…(or whatever shows you do like, minus their main character). As much as a lot of people dislike Rachel, it’s her show so she’ll probably never go away. :/ I do hope that Rachel and Finn cut ties though…(though I know it won’t happen) so that HE won’t have to be in every episode, too. Rachel is bad enough. >.>

        • Kate

Each of those shows have the main character in their title (Dexter > Dexter, Legend of Korra > Korra). This isn’t called Rachel (or whatever variation of that). It’s called Glee, because it’s about a glee club. These characters graduated, they could introduce new “main” characters if that’s what you want to call Finn and Rachel. Maybe show Rachel and Finn occasionally but not in every episode.

          • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

I didn’t say every show with one main character was named after the main character. There are plenty of shows where they have one, but are called something different. Take “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”. Main character is Amy, yet the show isn’t called “Amy”. Or how about “Drop Dead Diva”. The main character is Deb, but it’s not called “Deb”. Just because it’s called Glee, doesn’t necessarily mean that it doesn’t have a character that’s bigger than the others.

I’m telling you if they keep mistreating Kurt if Rachel takes over Glee, I too will be done with this show.

  • Leslie

I’m so upset that they’re keeping Kurt in Lima. He’s been dreaming and
planning for New York for years. Suddenly he gives up after a rejection
from one extremely competitive school? He just decides to give in and
stay in the town where he’s been constantly harassed? What kind of a
message is that for kids? That’s ridiculous. Glee’s writing is just
rehashed storylines designed for maximum short-term drama with
absolutely NO REGARD for consistency or characterization. It’s gotten
more and more terrible as the seasons have worn on, and I don’t think I
can keep watching it anymore, no matter how great the cast is. So
    disappointing.

  • Casey

Where is any mention of Dave Karofsky? They left a suicidal boy in the hospital, and then NOTHING. They need to bring him back (maybe into the NY storyline as a college student somewhere in the city), so we can actually see how he has changed from the bully he once was. I certainly wouldn’t expect him in every episode, but he sure as hell should consistently show up. Oh yeah, and he needs to sing like everyone else in this show has!

  • http://twitter.com/purplehrdwonder Caitlin Kelly

I’m very disappointed in this news and my already low hopes for the season have gotten even lower. For one thing, a format isn’t revolutionary when it’s already been used on the show! And I’m very meh about more tribute episodes. Last thing the show needs is more stunts.

But mostly, I’m annoyed that the writers don’t seem to have learned any lessons from the failures in the last two seasons and instead choose to stick with the same tired formula that’s been bleeding viewers. I don’t have a problem with checking in with the graduated cast members every few episodes (maybe one or two of them per episode just so we can keep abreast of their lives) since they were such a major part of the glee club, but this sounds overwhelming, considering we have to factor in the addition of a significant number of new recruits to New Directions. How is anyone not named Rachel Berry going to get a decent storyline like this?

I usually believe that teasers and spoilers should be taken with a grain of salt since they can often end up playing out the opposite of how you expect, but that’s for shows that have earned my trust. Glee has lost it, so I have very, very low expectations for the season.

    • Guest

      Preach!

  • BlueBronze

I don’t think there’s too much new information here (nothing that fans probably couldn’t guess themselves), and we already know, in typical Glee fashion, that any and all spoilers are subject to change. I guess I’m being nitpicky about certain things, but I’ll keep it down to the two that bother me the most.
    1. NY/Ohio split being the same as the McKinley/Dalton split? Firstly, Dalton wasn’t even in every single episode, so we know that’s a lie. Secondly, the McKinley/Dalton split is still going to exist, so now it’s a McKinley/Dalton/New York/LA/Ft. Benning split. I hope the writers know what they’re doing. 2. “Rachel will be in contact with McKinley almost to a funny point.” If we’re honest, Glee left most of their funny back in season 1, when it was mainly satirical. I’m afraid this will probably come off more as annoying.

    • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels as though it pretty much sunk after season 1…

  • http://twitter.com/jackson_5819 Jackson Tan

I’m missing Glee so much!!! i’m so excited they are coming back soon

  • jozefd14

Of course the second episode would be more pop music because of another Britney Spears tribute..

  • Isistelle

I think Darren had a tooth ache because he missed his dental appointment when he was performing for the US president xD

    • Raffc

Wasn’t Cory Montieth the one that had a toothache?

I agree with you Jess. Glee is running on its last legs. Especially with the poorly written scripts these so called writers are providing.
