While attending San Diego Comic-Con, Universal has announced that Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close director Stephen Daldry will bring the Broadway musical to the big screen.

Deadline revealed that Daldry had signed on to direct, ending a lengthy process of meetings and discussions with various Hollywood hot-shots.

Based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, the 2003 musical is the thirteenth longest-running Broadway production of all time, and only the third musical to exceed $500 million in total revenue. As well as directing Billy Elliot and ELAIC, Stephen Daldry won a Tony for his work on An Inspector Calls.

Do you think Wicked could defy gravity with Daldry in the directors chair, or could it turn into “Something Bad”?

I’m so excited to see this! I really hope it’ll turn out fantastic ’cause I can afford see a movie instead of a plane ticket and Broadway ticket.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/AN23EEIA47PXDBYCGOIRSUIEU4 jakeysf99

I like Lea, but she doesn’t have the commanding presence required to play Elphaba.  And although I love love love Idina Menzel, she is a little too old to be playing her especially during the college years.  I hate to say it but after seeing her in the trailer for Les Mez, I’m thinking Anne Hathaway.  I think she could be pull it off.  She definitely has the right look and girlfriend can sing.

  • daisyduck

I LOVE Wicked. I just really hope they cast the two female leads really well…

  • d3erudite

Oh my fucking god!!! Didn’t see that coming but I’m very excited!!!! Lea Michele for Elphaba!!!!

  • Kelly

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!! I had hoped they would do it for the 10th anniversary!

    • d3erudite

It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for this. Lea Michele as Elphaba!!!!!!!!

  • Tessa

    Samantha Barks for Elphaba!

    • Guest

Let’s see how she does in Les Misérables first…

      • Tessa

She’s amazing on stage, I don’t think she’d be a problem in Les Mis. She is the person I am the least worried about underperforming in that film

  • http://twitter.com/NiallJAdams Niall Adams

I’m so excited! Totally unexpected but such great news! I can’t wait! On another note I loved the line at the end of the article.

  • http://twitter.com/jthebanks Jay Banks

Now to get Anne Hathaway as Elphaba and Sutton Foster as Glinda.

    • d3erudite

Anne is going to be in les mis. She can’t be in two film captions of classic musicals.

      • Andy

        Why not?

        • Meggie Ryder

          sutton foster? interesting!

  • Rosie

This sounds like it could be really good! I saw his An Inspector Calls on stage which was amazing, so I have high hopes for his direction! Otherwise, it will all hang on how well they cast the leads. I’d love it if Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel could do it, but there are some other incredible actressess out there as well who would be great too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=690341156 Andrew Davies-Land

    Totally game for it!!

  • jstjohn83

they need to cast kristin chenoweth and idina menzel in the movie

  • Tariq

I absolutely cannot wait for this movie!

  • KB

YES. I was hoping Stephen would be chosen for Catching Fire, but now that we know that didn’t pan out, this is great news too! Wicked is a very flawed musical, but hopefully Daldry will be able to make a film that’s a better piece of art. I have faith he will.

    • jlo

Why do you think that the musical is flawed?

  • notenoughpuff

I’m very excited about this. I only hope/wish the original cast can be in the film, like in the Rent movie. (Only I know that not everyone was in it, but most of them were.)

  • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

Wow, this is awesome news!  I think this movie can be visually amazing.  I hope it’s done right! :D

  • KristenKranz

While it would be awesome to see Kristen & Idina reprise their roles, I would love to see Lea Michele as Elphaba & Megan Hilty as Galinda! Such a great show thy will make a fantastic movie! Can’t wait!

    • Meggie R

lea michelle, megan hilty and wicked, oh my! lol what a pair they’d make! I suggest: Eden Espinosa and Christina DeCicco. maybe Teal Wicks and Katie Rose Clarke?.

  • http://twitter.com/ivangatewood Ivan Gatewood

Only if they cast Kristin and Idina!

    • KB

They’re twenty years older than the characters now. It wouldn’t work.

      • http://twitter.com/ivangatewood Ivan Gatewood

        With makeup, anything works!

        • KB

          No.

          • Meggie R

Sorry but yeah. and besides, I think there are actresses more fitted to play the roles. not just bcuz of age but other stuff.

  • Jasmine-dixon

if lea michele as elphaba that would ruin wicked

    • Jasmine-dixon

      was*

  • http://www.facebook.com/jason.lalljee?ref=tn_tnmn Jason

I love Daldry but never read Wicked.

  • goldensnidget

I LOVE Wicked! The first time I saw it, the incomparable Kerry Ellis was playing Elphaba in the West End, and she was mind-blowingly incredible. Diane Pilkington played Galinda, and she was so absolutely wonderful that I would love it if these two won the roles. Of course, they’re probably too old, but we can still dream :) I am extremely excited to see this, but I don’t know anything of the director…

  • ExtraordinaryGirl

Oh sweet baby Jesus, yes!!! Billy Elliot is one of my favourite movies, and I sincerely hope that they will cast unknown actors with tons of talent instead of Hollywood celebs.

    • Meggie R

I don’t think it can be Hollywood stars. I mean idk many of em who belt “the wizard and i” do u? “no need to respond that was rhetorical”

  • Guest

I really hope they cast Idina & Kristen for Elphaba & Galinda. That would just be icing on the cake.

    • hi

um no. they’re too old. plus it wicked wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t the whole original wicked cast

  • AHaw

This is one of my favorite musicals…but I think less well known leads might be good? Or IDK a current broadway star that hasn’t yet crossed over…either way I will be in the theater.

  • BigD5608

First we can all accept now that Idina and Kristen will not be the leads.  Just not gonna happen.  Second, is it going to be based off the book or the musical?  While the two are essentially the same story they are both told very differently.  Just food for thought.

    • Alcyone

I’m assuming it will be the musical. The music doesn’t really fit into the book as well… plus the musical is better anyway. :)

    • Meggie Ryder

as much as we all love chenzel, it’s not working (many :[‘s) …..hmmm…i suggest eden espinosa (for those AMAZING riffs) and christina decicco (for her humor and ability to hit the optional high notes)!

  • Phantomoca

    Helene Yorke for Galinda!

    • Meggie R.

      i love her she’s a HILARIOUS!

  • oblyviate

I would love to see some of the Australian cast in a movie!!!  (the leads are still more age appropriate)
    (except Bert. Gotta say it)
They better have good visuals on this film though, and put Weta Workshop-esqu reality into it, or it will definitely turn into “something bad”.

  • Normal iz Boring

Oh my gosh! That would have to be the greatest film adaptation since the Hunger Games Trilogy!

  • http://twitter.com/Red_Fiasco Cris

Lea Michele had better stay the hell away from this musical. She is talented and amazing, but she is not Elphaba.

    • http://twitter.com/fluflu44 Mandy Brennan

Lea Michele would be a good Elphaba. I think people have a bad habit of seeing Lea as Rachel. Rachel would be horrible for the role…but Lea certainly has the voice.

      • Rumbleroar Luna

OMG and Chris could be Guylinda like he (or maybe it was Lea) wanted. Not actually, though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Evanderiel Luca Caleffi

If she’s talented why not? Elphaba is a character, and every good actress can do it, unless is so ugly that no-one would see the movie.
The problem is IF Lea is not a good actress…

  • Allison L.

    JAMES MARSDEN as Fiyero!

  • http://twitter.com/fluflu44 Mandy Brennan

So excited for this!! I FINALLY saw Wicked last month (front row baby!) and it was flawless! I think it would be awesome if they cast someone who was in the musical at one point (long running) – either tour or Broadway. The current cast would be perfect. This needs to hurry up and happen already!

  • Jessica Lancaster

The article really should say “very loosely based” on the book, haha. Personally I love them both, but I wish the musical had stayed a little closer to the book, especially at the end. I won’t say more so I don’t spoil either book or musical!

Really though, I was wondering how long it would take before they made a movie of this musical…however, it does appear that they waited till Kristin and Idina were too old (at least for the first act). I’m not sure what’s up with all of the hate for Lea Michele though; I saw her on Broadway in Spring Awakening three times. She is a brilliant Broadway singer/actress.

  • Luna Lovegood

I’m excited for the movie, of course, but will it still be on Broadway?

    • http://www.jossarden.com/ Joss Arden

Of course. The Broadway production is making a ridiculous amount of money. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

  • ASugg

Only if Kristen and Idina are playing the leads since the parts were written for them anyway :)

  • Dolphie16

Lea Michele!!!!!!!!! These songs were made for her!

  • kelsey0403

I’m just excited they’re finally turning this into a film! I’ve seen Wicked 3 times and LOVE it.

  • Lonksthewriter

I’m critical of movie musicals. They can be really bad, or really good. Wicked was an instant classic, and I just hope they don’t screw it up.

    • DarrlynM

I soooo agree with you. I think of great move adaptions like Chicago, Grease, Dreamgirls but think of others like NINE and Rock of Ages which were not so great

  • http://www.jossarden.com/ Joss Arden

Honestly, I’d much rather see a movie adaptation of the novel rather than a movie adaptation of the musical. I guess I’m the minority.

    • oblyviate

I’m not sure which I would prefer – they are so very different… Perhaps once the movie-musical has done well, they might explore adapting the Wicked Years series, that’d be awesome.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Evanderiel Luca Caleffi

I don’t like so much the book. I prefer the musical.

    • Richard Bailey

I think the book would do better as a tv miniseries

  • Loretta

I think one way they could involve Idina and Kristen is by splitting the Galinda and Elphaba roles between them and two actresses more age appropriate for the first act.

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Wow, finally! I feel like this movie has been “in the works” for so long! I’m excited to be getting some news!

  • http://www.twitter.com/morganstradling Morgan Burt Stradling

    Chris Colfer as Boq, anyone?

  • Guest

Hmm. Will they just be bringing the musical to film? Or will they bring the novel to film? Both would be great, but I honestly hope it is the later. If they do a novel adaptation, then they could easily adapt Maguire’s other books!

  • A11starm3

I hope Kristin Chenoweth plays madam morrible!

  • Julia

Are they basing it off the musical or the book? There’s a difference between the two that could mean hit or flop.

  • DK

If they are adapting the musical, then I’m a little uneasy… So many questions. First one is “how do you adapt Defying Gravity to the screen without it looking cheesy and losing it’s impact and grandeur?” I hope they know what they are doing…

  • Ernest Edward

They should create the world of the book but integrate the music from the musical. Best of both worlds. The musical is not enough substance for a feature film, IMO…so they should definitely add more from the book. But, as always, the book is too long for a feature film, so the best bet would be a little bit of both.

  • Rachel

PLEASE MAKE WICKED MOVIE. IT WOULD BE SO NICE TO WATCH IT WHENEVER I WANT!!!! I LOVED ITTT SO MUCHHH

  • nmharleyrider

You can just bet the way Hollywood works that Ann Hathaway will get one of the lead parts.

  • misplacedeuropean

I may or may not have cried while reading this. I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR EVERRRR. And as much as I adore Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (trust me, I’m a true Cheno fan through and through) they are just too old. Their age, when they were on Broadway for it, was perfect. But definitely not now. It would, however, be hilarious to see Cheno as Madam Morrible.

I would love to see a movie adaptation of the novel as well (Gregory Maguire is pure genius…and we’d have four of them!) but… I couldn’t go without the beautiful songs!

  • Elphie

Please have Aaron Tveit as Fiyero. He was the best dancer!
