The Prometheus and X Men: First Class star has signed on for the adaptation of the massively successful video game franchise.

Ubisoft today announced the casting via Variety, as well as plans to produce the film independently after 2011 negotiations with Sony fell through.

Fassbender will also co-produce the project, which will tell the story of Desmond Miles, a man who is kidnapped by a mysterious organisation called Knights Templar and sent back in time to retrieve various historical artefacts.

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice” to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

Ubisoft are currently seeking to gain financial backing for the movie, as well as pursuing film adaptations of Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon. The third proper entry in the video game franchise is set for release in October, and will be set during the American Revoloution.

It is unclear what part of the Assassin’s Creed mythology will be used in the screenplay, nor do we know we know if Fassbender will be playing Altair, Ezio, Connor or some new assassin.

What do you think of the casting?

now I may care about this movie. Fassbender rules, and him as an Assassin has to be EPIC

In your quickness to rush this out you got the facts wrong – the third game will be set during the Revolutionary War, not the Civil War.  And it’s not really the third game, it’s the 5th game for consoles (because of Brotherhood and Revelations, which were unnumbered), and there have been a couple of PSP games as well.  Calling it the “third game in the franchise” is really inaccurate despite the numbering.

    Greatest news ever? Yup!

I’m really excited about this one. Fassbender isn’t the right ethnicity for any of the characters really, but he’s a damn good actor so I can forgive that white-wash. I hope this isn’t crap though like most video game-based movies. It has so much potential.
They NEED to include some of Jesper Kyd’s soundtrack in it too. I mean, ‘Ezio’s Family’…it’s pretty great.

I never pictured Altair as middle eastern like Malik. It was the crusades, there were plenty of Europeans running around.

Which assassin will he be playing is the question. But totally awesome!

    Fassbender for the win!!

WHY?? Video game movies almost never end well…I really wish they would stop trying. I like my games as games, not movies.

If its an expansion of the universe and not an adaptation, I think it will be good. Ubisoft has already dabbled with short film within the series 3 times so far. I love Fassbender but he also doesn’t strike me as a Desmond (which should also nix desmond’s assassin line in the animus since their face model are all based on desmond’s in the game)

Though i feel if its a new chapter in the series I think that he will bring loads of good things to the series.

maybe the movie is an intro for the next games like assassins creed lineage

I’m going to hold my breath on this one.  Though Fassbender is attached to this project, most video game adaptations tend to really, really suck.  But at least Uwe Boll isn’t directing.  Thank God for that.

I love Michael and I’d watch anything he was in and the decision makes me Really really happy! But of course, there’s that old crux that there hasn’t really been a good video game movie. Ever. SO… it’s definitely worrying. I want Michael to only be in good movies. I think maybe if he was playing Desmond they could focus a little more on his life before he entered the animus? Or they could do something completely different just within the same world. Maybe he could play the guy who was in before Desmond. Who knows! Even though I always balk at white washing, Michael is a tremendous actor and I think he is only an asset to the movie.
