Following months of rumours and speculation, Disney has finally confirmed that they are working on an animated Marvel film.
Ever since Disney bought Marvel in 2009, comic-book and film fans alike have been waiting for the news that Disney’s legendary animation studios were working on a film based on Marvels characters. Three years later Entertainment Weekly has finally confirmed that Disney are developing a film based on the superhero team, Big Hero 6.
Entertainment Weekly reports:
Walt Disney Studios animation is officially joining forces with Marvel.
Big Hero 6 is not as well known as The Avengers, but it’s another group of powerful individuals with wildly different histories and powers, united by the Japanese government as a crisis-fighting super-squad.
Disney reps confirmed to EW that the film is in the early stages of development, though they declined to specify which filmmakers are involved. As Hollywood heads into Comic-Con next month, rumors are swirling…
Big Hero 6 are a relatively unknown team, both in comics and the mainstream media. The team is a group of Japanese heroes, who first appeared in the late ’90s, and features the characters Silver Samurai and former X-Men member Sunfire. However with these characters being tied up with Fox and the X-Men franchise, Disney is likely to use an iteration of the team currently appearing in the Spiderman ‘Ends of the Earth’ storyline.
For the past few days several sites have been reporting that the Disney were developing an animated film with these characters, but this is the first credible report which has surfaced. With the news of Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy, this would be the second group of cult Marvel characters being adapted for the big screen.
Very little is known about this project, but expect to hear more details at Comic-Con in the coming weeks. Are you excited to see an animated Marvel film?
