A Once Upon a Time casting call has allegedly been sent out looking for two actresses that will play princesses introduced in season 2.

According to SpoilerTV, the show is looking for Anastasia and Magnolia:

Anastasia is a princess.

Magnolia is a fierce Asian warrior who feels a connection to the earth and its creatures.

Both of their stories involve love.

Both characters will be introduced in 2×01. While Anastasia might refer to the (non-Disney) cartoon character based on the daughter of the last Russian tsar, we can’t help but think that these sound like code names. Magnolia has Mulan written all over her.

Anastasia!! yay, she is one of my favorites Princess….

I hope it’s not really anastasia……she was a real person and the russian revolution was a real event and I don’t think it’s appropriate to take such a serious topic and cover it in fairy dust (the twentieth century fox version walked a fine line, but kept it dark enough to pay respect to the reality of the events)…….if it’s the name of a princess based on an old Russian fairytale that would be neat and I support it 100%. I hope, and it probably is a code name though…it wouldn’t really make sense to bring her into the storyline anyway as she always existed in our world and if she did survive the russian revolution she would be over 100 years old now….rant over

totally agree… while the fox version gave the historic story and speculation of “who IS anastasia” a happy ending, i believe it was created prior to the discovery of anastasia’s bones, so it was the visualization of a possible true story.  unfortunately in the 90′s it was discovered that anastasia’s bones were present in the ground, and she had not survived.  To make a new show playing off the idea that she lived happily ever after, or even in a fairytale-like world is horrendous.. a bit like adding anne frank to the show. ridiculous and insensitive.

I agree with the code names point. The writers of Doctor Who have used it, so it just makes sense for the writers of OUAT to do so. My bet’s on them using just the first letter of the name for code. And since they’ve brought up Regina’s “mermaid problem” in a previous episode and there’s been talks of that “mermaid problem” showing up, my hypothetical money’s on the idea of Anastasia being Ariel.

In Disney, Anastasia is one of Cinderella’s step sisters.

    • isenhobbitz

      hmmm, that would make sense.

      oh that’s right!… but she wasn’t a princess

        Neither was mùlán

These are probably their Storybrooke names. I mean, if we heard of a casting call for Mary Margaret and David and Ashley, we wouldn’t think “OH! Snow White, Prince Charming and Cinderella!”

I’m thinking Magnolia might be a cross between Mulan and Pocahantas? They like mixing and crossing their characters. I’m thinking Anastasia might be Sleeping Beauty.

pocahonats for SURE. “come run the hidden pine trails of the forrest!”

  • GeekGirl101

I don’t know how I feel about Anastasia, personally I despise the cartoon and any movie about Anastasia, mostly because I’m a Historian and the entire family DIED. She’s not a fairy tale, she’s a dead girl.

    • GeekGirl101

But if it isn’t THAT Anastasia, and its just a name then I have no problem with it.

  • Mad

    Awesome. These sound great!

Please by Mulan and Ariel… please be Mulan and Ariel *crosses fingers*

    Wait-what? What?!

Magnolia sounds like Pocahontas for me…

  • Ande Anderson

    Um, how can I audition?

  • VioletteTreeman

I’m really hoping that Anastasia is the characters “real world” name.  I just don’t think she could be a fairytale character when she’s a real historical figure.

  • Jessica Lancaster

Well, I just came across this on Wikipedia: ”
In Chinese, mùlán (s 木兰, t 木蘭, lit. “wood-orchid”) refers to the magnolia.”

So I think we have our answer there…

As for Anastasia, I sincerely hope they’re not referring to Anastasia Romanov. She was just an innocent girl who was murdered alongside her whole family. I would hardly call that a fairytale…

  • AliceHermione

I don’t know if it means anything but Anastasia is one of Cinderella’s step sister’s name in the Disney version of it. BUT I am thinking it is the Little Mermaid. I am still hoping for my Rapunzel to come on this show!

  • lynzi

Magnolia sounds like Mulan and Pocahontas together. Maybe they put them together since Pocahontas isn’t a fairy tale, but a real person.

  • notenoughpuff

Didn’t they say that they were definitely doing Ariel in season 2?

    • Elphaba Thropp

I think someone said that they would like to do The Little Mermaid, but no one confirmed it.

  • RavenclawWriter

I’m still waiting for Ariel and Rapunzel. And Sleeping Beauty. :) But, if they do Mulan I’ll be super excited.

  • Kitty17794

Magnolia is obviously Mulan. But Anastasia sounds like Jasmine or Ariel to me…

  • http://twitter.com/CuriousCarson Carson

Magnolia is obviously Mulan, not just because of the Asian part.  The name Mulan is derived from the word for magnolia, and the magnolia flower is a major symbol in the Disney movie: “the flower that blooms in adversity …”
