Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson has confirmed that he is on board for a sequel, alongside Chloe Moretz and Christoper Mintz-Plasse!

The news comes after nearly two years of doubts, false-starts, and fears from fans of the Matthew Vaughn directed superhero movie. Back in February, Mark Millar revealed that a sequel would definitely happen – but until now fans have been unsure about the prospects of the original cast returning, particularly due to Chloe Moretz’s loaded schedule.

In an interview with Collider, Aaron Johnson confirmed rumours that he is on board for the second entry. Moretz and Mintz-Plasse will also return. The trio will step into the skin-tight disguises of Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist.

Collider: Since there’s been talk of it again, will there finally be a Kick-Ass sequel?

AARON JOHNSON: It’s pretty much set to go, this Fall. I think now Chloe [Grace Moretz] and Chris [Mintz-Plasse] are on board. I’m certainly set up to do it. Jeff Wadlow is to direct. Yeah, I think it’s going to happen.

Have you gotten to see a script yet?

JOHNSON: Yeah, I have.

Will it be a hard R, as far as the rating goes?

JOHNSON: Oh, yeah! It keeps the standard, from the first film.

While the R rating may be fairly obvious given the graphic content of the comics upon which the film will be based, it comes as comfort to hardcore fans who were concerned that a studio production would lead to a more mainstream version of the story, with all adult material toned down dramatically. Kick-Ass was famously made independently by Matthew Vaughn after no studio would take the script due to concerns at the language, gore and dread the film presented. However, if Johnson’s interview is anything to go by we will be seeing a sequel that is just as violent as it’s predecessor.

Kick-Ass 2 will be directed by Never Back Down‘s Jeff Wadlow, who will also pen the adaptation of Millar’s cult comic book. Matthew Vaughn will executive produce due to his prior commitment to an X-Men: First Class sequel.

Are you excited to see the original cast return for an R-rated Kick-Ass 2?

This is going to be great!

I really enjoyed the first movie, but I just don’t know about a sequel. Sometimes I wish they would just let movies be and not have to run them into the ground.

In fairness, it is adapted from the comic book. The story for the third collection was conceived before the first ever issue had even been released. I know what you mean about unnecessary sequels, but when it comes down to adaptations they at least have a plot that wasn’t conceived purely for monetary gain.

Exactly. Think of the sequel to Woman in Black, and it’s the complete opposite. =P

That is true. I guess if they have a good story go for it, but the first one did wrap up everything at least that I cared about. I hope it is good and worthwhile, it just will be very hard to live up to the first story line.

I liked the first one but i’m weary about the sequel.
after I saw the movie, i checked the comics and kick ass 2- the comic is… well it’s like 100 more violent and gruesome.
(GENERAL SPOILERS- there’s mass murder, lots and lots people killed, a gruesome beheading, etc)

so yeah… I don’t know how they’re going to deal with those factors.

then again I compared the kickass 1 book vs movie- and they definitely toned down a few things and changed a few things to not make it as brutal.

so maybe the movie wont reach Watchmen levels of sadist explicit violence

The thing with 1 to 2 is it shifts from a real pop culture comedy to quite a brutal look at what would really happen. They NEED to tone it down a bit, but even after toning it down I still think it will be more violent than the first one. Like you said, there are gruesome beheading, rape, torture, mass murder – the violence in general is just next level.

I don’t understand why the R-rated part is news. The first one was a hard R as well. Your acting like it’s some huge surprise.

    Seriously can’t wait!

I’ve read the 1st and second comics. The second steps the violence up to another level. Its goddamn gruesome

Seeing how Kick-Ass ended, I was 100% that they had a sequel planned.

The first movie was Freakin’ AWESOME!  I originally saw it, not knowing what to expect. After I finished it, I told my friends and we watched it together. Then with some more friends.  Total, I think I’ve seen it about 10 times.  It is truly one of the best superhero action flicks ever.
