CinemaBlend previewed Harry Potter Kinect at E3 earlier this week, and they’ve shared some thoughts on the general gameplay.

On paper, the game sounds cool: You play alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione as yourself (the game scans your face) as you all go through 30 of the memorable scenes in the books and films.

But CinemaBlend finds the game to be underdeveloped:

Like using the force in Star Wars, using spells in Harry Potter through the Kinect has been a hope of mine since the technology was announced. I pretend to hold a wand and cast spells most of the time anyway. Unfortunately, also like Star Wars for Kinect, this game too generally seems underdeveloped and generic.

There are 30-something levels in the game, all recreations of the most exciting scenes from the eight Harry Potter films. You also play as a new character using a facescan feature that even sorts you into a house, so you play alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione as yourself. This part, I dig. The players’ interactions range from swatting away pixies to casting spells to chasing the golden snitch. You’ll use all the basic Kinect moves – leaning, ducking, jumping, pointing, etc.

Where the game has potential to be special is with voice commands, allowing you to call out your spell with your voice before you cast it, just like in the Potter universe. Here, it signals the game to change your spell to whatever you want to use. Even though I was rather unimpressed with the endless leaning left and right of Quiddith and the poor aim of casting spells on Death Eaters as I ran away from them, I’m still excited to see how the voice commands play out.

The writer goes on to note that the game is intended for 6 to 10 year olds, and therefore he speculates that kids may much more appreciate the simple technology than he does.

Will you give Harry Potter Kinect a try when it hits shelves in the fall? The game was announced May 25.

These Potter games just don’t get it …
every single one of them has been off the mark, and in fact they are getting worse. The lego harry potter games aren’t bad but far from great games.

well not the first two video games.  yeah the goblet of fire was he worst and it seems the Deathly Hallows is the worst too since its linear and you cant wander around

I thought the first 3 were fun, then fourth sucked. Fifth was good, while six was just a repeat of 5, then 7/8 sucked.

Agreed.  One of the biggest let downs of the franchise, they literally failed at making one single game worth playing.  Seems impossible to actually fail at all of them, but they sure achieved complete and utter failure.

  • Hugo weasley

They just need to realize that what we want is an MMORPG

    • Zguida09

YES! Finally some one who agrees with me

    • Kelly

yes! What fans would flock to is a true Harry Potter MMORPG!!!!!  Create a hogwarts student, pick classes to take, get your house sorted, wand, pet, there is so much that can be done in a MMORPG, it would an epic game.

      • Wittle

        This sounds like Pottermore :)

    • Kate

SO AGREE. Give us an MMORPG! Please! The universe is begging for a fresh awesome MMORPG and this would so be it.

  • Dizymisslizzy

i dunno the screen shot look kinda creepy makes harry look dead in the eyes

  • Zguida09

It makes me sad that they took Richard Harris out as DumbleD for this game. *le sigh*

    • Ned StarK

I came here to say the same thing !

    • LilyLuna

That’s what I was going to say, all I could think when I saw the picture was “oh no they didn’t!”. :/

Just like the book of spells game, this sounds like something I’d love when I was younger. But like with most games, using kinect for small, specific movements doesn’t really work. I’ve never seen technology like the kinect that works the way it’s supposed to work, which is where I think the downfall of these games starts. Poor equipment makes for poor game play

  • EuanLauder

I’ve played all the games and to be honest the greatest one of all was the Quidditch game.

  • Rinzler63

The first three games and the Quidditch game are the best of the lot. All i want them to do is make these 4 For download on the network and I’d buy them.

  • isenhobbitz

    We’re getting sorted……..again?

  • gcw07

Most Kinect games are for kids 10 and under, so it isn’t surprising this will not be all that complex. With that said, it was not a final release game, but a preview release shown at E3. While I doubt it will ever be much more complex then what it is, you have to look at it from the perspective of a 10 year old and not an adult.

  • Broyds1993

What a relief, I was hoping the game would be crap, as I don’t have an Xbox 360 or a crapbox 360 more like and I won’t be missing out yupeee!

  • Andrew_ww

I’ll play a Harry Potter game again when they get some imagination and stop trying to copy the films. Just about every game is terrible these days.

errm thats kind of the point of these games since their based on the films duh..

      • Andrew_ww

no…its based on Harry Potter which is a BOOK series first.

Every Harry Potter game, with the exception of the LEGO games and the first movie, are all underdeveloped.  Once a movie gets announced and is having a game, the game developers pretty much have the time between the end of filmiing and a few weeks before the movie comes to theaters to make a game.  This is not nearly enough time to make a quality game, but the game studios (not the developers) don’t care because the money they make off of the super mega fans who don’t game regurarly will spent the $60 as they are not as informed about videogames.  Most quality games have atleast 2 years to be made.  Movie games are always forced through a super sped-up development cycle so they can be the same as the movie’s plot and look, while coming out the tuesday of the week the film debuts.  It’s why ALL of the Harry Potter games since Chamber of Secrets are piles of unplayable shit and boring as hell. While on he other hand the LEGO games aren’t (even the first film’s game wasn’t bad because I believe it wasn’t made in line with the movie, rather having a more cartoonish look).  And Kinect games are always going to be even more messes, despite there being no rush to release the game in time for a movie.

  • Avengerbender

If they made it too advanced then the awesomeness of Harry’s magic would be too much for Microcrap’s CrapBox 360 to handle. lol jk

  • TheDude

This still looks better than Deathly Hallows. At least here there is a touch of creativity (Voice commands for spells, wand movements, character creation). Deathly Hallows was just a straight copy/paste shooter. They didn’t even try to hide the fact that the game played like a shooter. The used gun noises for the spells. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the 3 hours it took me to complete the game, but this looks a lot more innovative. As far as it being under-developed, they still have time. As a Harry Potter fan, I will definitely be getting this game. I’ll just have to make up a story when I get to GameStop like “My 7 year-old nephew wanted this for his birthday.” ;D

  • Mind if I slytherin?

As soon as I saw this, I bought it and had a BLAST! I am a ravenclaw with slytherin characteristics, so on pottermore im ravenclaw, on this game slytherin. I did awsome on potions (snape complemented me ^^) but in charms.. for some reason my voice wouldnt registure with the game so it made it harder. I did wonderful as seeker (punched potter!) and aced herbology. I cant wait for my third year ^^ (btw.. my bf made me hermiones wand, so i couldnt resist using it during gameplay, it made it all the more real!). Im eighteen, and Ive waited since I was eight for a chance to be at hogwarts. Now I finally have the chance!
