Tonight at its E3 conference in Los Angeles, Sony announced Wonderbook: Book of Spells – a game made in collaboration with J.K. Rowling.
A live demo was given during the conference, and you use your Playstation Wonderbook device and Move controller to cast and learn new spells. Sony says “new writing” from J.K. Rowling is included.
Within the game you learn the history of spells, like the discovery of Wingardium Leviosa. During the demo, we saw a stage set up in the game where we can visually see how ancient wizards discovered the spell.
“The Book” is peppered with these stories.
Also in the demo the player learned how to make the fire-making spells.
This story is developing and we expect Sony will release video and/or photos online soon. The important takeaway is that this does indeed appear to be brand new information from J.K. Rowling — we’d almost call it Enyclopedia-like.
The live demo stars only you, the player, and you can gain house points as you work your magic.
Said J.K. Rowling:
Wonderbook: Book of Spells is the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook. I’ve loved working with Sony’s creative team to bring my spells, and some of the history behind them to life. This is an extraordinary device that offers a reading experience like no other. We’ll have more to share before it’s launch this Holiday.
“Past the chapter tests to unlock a series of beautiful poems, each revealing a witty tale of a Hogwarts student that did not live up to expectations. ‘Book of Spells’ lives up to expectations never been seen before. This is truly an amazing collaboration with J.K. Rowling,” said Sony’s keynote speaker.
As you may know, Pottermore has been made in close partnership with Sony, and the electronics company said that Book of Spells is the next phase of the partnership.
UPDATE: The official trailer… (thanks, TDADC!)
