Anyone that watched the Vampire Diaries season 3 finale knows that the main characters have some pretty dramatic changes to adjust to in season 4. Rather than be a cause for concern, I think it’s a great opportunity for the show to push forward to even more exciting plot territory. Don’t believe me? Read on to find out why! **Spoilers Ahead**

Elena isn’t so fragile anymore. Damon, Stefan, Caroline, Tyler, Bonnie, Jeremy, and Matt can finally relax and maybe take that beach vacation they have been putting off. Elena is no longer usable as the doppelganger and will be able to put up a reasonable fight if a baddie comes knocking at her door. No more “How do we keep Elena alive this week?” conversations. She is now a part of the undead, and therefore a lot more durable.

Jeremy and Matt are the last remaining humans. There are bound to be a few interesting stories left to tell from the human perspective, especially now that we have so many main characters that we saw during their human days and are now supernatural. I would love to see more of Team Human working together when trouble comes-a-knocking. They can keep an eye out for each other. Especially since it now seems inevitable that the vampires of Mystic Falls are going to be hunted by the Founders Council (by the way, thanks for that Evil Alaric). Hopefully, having a couple of humans on the supernatural side will come in handy.

Elena will now get back the few beautiful memories that Damon compelled her to forget. Remember the scene from “Rose” where Damon tells her he loves her and therefore can’t be selfish with her? How about Elena meeting Damon right before the infamous crash? One of the side effects of being in transition is that she will get those memories back. Will this affect the decision Elena made in the finale? How will Damon react to her getting those memories back?

No more hybrids. I had been getting really tired of hearing Klaus’ standby plan, “I’m going to take Elena and sire myself a new family.” As if taking Elena and leaving Mystic Falls would have been easy. Did he really think that the brothers Salvatore (amongst many others) wouldn’t have done everything in their power to keep him from leaving with her? I’m sure if he would have ever tried to live out this plan that it would have ended in a bloody battle. One of the fringe benefits of Vampire Elena is no more Doppelganger Elena, and thus, no more hybrids.

It will start a whole new kind of drama. Is Vampire Elena going to be like Caroline? Or Damon? Or Ripper Stefan? Or squirrel-eating Stefan? Will the brothers Salvatore still be as drawn to her? Whose blood was used to turn her? How will the Salvatore brothers feel about Vampire Elena? If the blood belonged to one of them, will it upset the balance of Team Salvatore that has been so strong lately?

The Tyler/Caroline/Klaus triangle is heating up. So season 3 brought us a brand new love triangle and a complicated one at that. Caroline has never really given Klaus too much consideration, but with Klaus currently taking up residence in Tyler’s body, how could this affect the triangle? Will Caroline know about Bonnie’s spell work, or will that stay a secret from her? What happens if/when Klaus gets his body back? There are definitely some very interesting twists and turns in store for this triangle…

With so many new avenues for the season 4 plot to take, I can’t help but shiver with anticipation when I think of the incredible possibilities. What do you think? Could the show lose a bit of its identity with Elena’s transformation? Or was it time for her story to take that next dramatic step? Feel free to sound off in the comments below!

“Or squirrel-eating Stefan?” LMAO i think i missed that episode

I don’t watch this show, but can I just say that the guy on the right of that picture is hilarious. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Posh Spice pout that well.

I was kind of tired of Elena having to be saved all the time. So happy that she’s a vampire now. I had been waiting for that to happen.

So long my glorious, glorious Dalaric bromance. My biggest concern for season 4 is how they’re going to deal with ghost!Ric with Matt Davis starring in “Cult” as well, though it’ll only be 13 episodes.

    • KristenKranz

I too was a huge fan of the Dalaric bromance & am sad to see it go. Ghost!Ric should be interesting & I can’t wait to see how they are gonna use him.

Alaric’s my favorite character, so I was not happy with his plotline at the end of the season, but at least the last glimpse we got of him as the Alaric we know. I vote Damon and Jeremy meet up at the Grill so ghost!Ric can day drink with Damon by proxy :p

    The process will be reversed.

No mention of Tatia, Katherine & Elena’s first meeting? I sure hope this is further discussed in Season 4. I’m so curious about that storyline.

    • KristenKranz

I’m still not convinced that Tatia is a vampire… I think it would be really interesting to see, but that’s why I didn’t mention this meeting. If they do in fact meet next season though, that ought to be one crazy episode!

    • Sarah

Oh, man. I didn’t even think about that. I’m so excited for an Elena/Katherine showdown. You know it’s going to happen.

I feel like hybrids could still be an option. Didn’t Klaus have Elena tied to that chair because he was draining her of blood? I would think that he already had a few blood bags before they saved her. I’m not sure if the bags were saved or if they will ever come up in the story again, but I think it leaves room for the writers to bring back hybrid creation in the future. I think it was time for Elena to change, but I still could have had a few more human episodes. I am excited for season four becasue I have no idea what the “big problem” is going to be. I know Klaus/Tyler is an issue and Elena becoming a vampire causes drama, but for the last three seasons there has always been someone that Elena has been running from. First Damon, then Katherine, then Elija, then Klaus, then there was Michel and Ester as well as the other originals. The villan just got bigger and badder. Now there is supposidly a new villian but I have no idea who it is going to be… I’m so curious! Now that you mentioned Elena not being fragile I am not sure who she is going to run from exactly.

    • KristenKranz

I guess there is still a little doppelganger blood floating around out there in those blood bags, but there is so little, at least we won’t have to listen to Klaus go on & on about it anymore…

Oh, & I too am excited as to who the next big bad is gonna be. I’m sure that the town hunting vampires will pose an issue, but there has to be a new bad guy as well, hmmm…

  • Thomas French

See this… I am very very upset!!! I had no idea that season 4 will only have 13 episodes!!! I know they will make the best of it,the plot will have to move faster is all. As long as we have Katherine in almost,if not all episodes, I’ll be a happy camper. :D Great job KK!!!

    • Wes

The Cult is 13 Episodes, not TVD.  They are bringing it in as a mid season thing in the winter/spring portion.  TVD will get it’s full 22/23 episode season.

While I’m sure those memories will have meaning to some extent, the one in Rose holds less impact, since Damon has shown her, and flat out told her he loves her several times since that moment.  The memory of her flirting with him before the accident may have more impact, but not significant.  It’ll be in her head, she’ll recall being attracted to him, his words might have impact, but she is not dumping Stefan suddenly because she is so shallow as to think “Oh wait, I DID meet you first.”  Damon has done MANY things to earn her love and admiration since those moments, and they should all be taken together in equal measure.

I cried so much when I saw ghostric talk to Jeremy. He’s family to Elena and Jeremy! Now they have noone but themselves left in the family but Elena is a vampire now. Will there be a new doppleganger now that Elena is a Vampire?? I hope Elena embraces her vampire side. Elena did want to be stronger. Lol. Can’t wait to watch season 4!! I’m cheering for a DELENA scene!
