Early this morning, Matt Smith ran the Olympic torch through the streets of Wales. There was much controversy surrounding Matt Smith being chosen to run the Olympic torch rather than David Tennant.

Regardless of what side you are on, Smith seems genuinely honored and humbled to be chosen. He remarked to the BBC, “It’s a great privilege to be involved. I can’t quite believe people have actually turned up, I thought I would be just be carrying it around, waving to the ducks.”

Once Smith ran with the torch, the crowds seemed truly pleased, including a six-year-old who got up before 6:00 a.m. to see his hero, The Doctor.

According to the BBC, “A total of 8,000 people will carry the flame on its 8,000 mile, 70-day journey around the UK to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on 27 July.”

Who else would you like to see carry the torch?

    So happy this happened!
A lot of people were bashing him because they wanted Tennant to carry the Torch but, really, Matt Makes a lot more sense.

Matt makes no sense at all – that’s the problem with the latest Who.

It’s was so weird watching him carry the torch, I keep expecting the Daleks to come out of the sky and attack him or something.

  • Andrea

Oh Matt, as awkward and adorable as always!!

I don’t think anyone had a problem with Matt Smith being chosen. We would just have been even happier if it was David Tennant.

I agree. I’m not upset by this, but I definitely wish David Tennant had been chosen. It’d make more sense to me.

To basically repeat everyone else, I’m happy Matt was given the opportunity because you could tell it meant a great deal to him. However, I still wish David Tennant was the one chosen. But at least the Doctor was there, just not in the same incarnation.

Who cares who carried it! I’m just excited for a Doctor to have carried it! :D:D:D

     …I didn’t get up for this. I’m a bad fan. :/

I don’t know, I mean, even if it WERE David Tennant it’s not like it would be the same as the show. He wouldn’t be in Doctor gear, they wouldn’t stage a trip and have him run in and pick it up. They certainly wouldn’t have him light the final torch so yeah, hey, at least they got the Doctor in there to represent, y’know? The Doctor carried the torch. Mission over! :D

“Better known as Doctor Who”…I hate it when people say that. Better known as the Doctor, his name isn’t Doctor Who. You have failed me British news lady.

I think it would have been awful to choose a previous doctor over the current doctor to run through cardiff, home of Doctor Who – what an insult it would have been to Matt!

Much as I love it, Doctor Who isn’t real, and so I find it kind of absurd that fans would expect the organisers to revolve everything around matching up an event such as this to canon.
