Last month we shared a new blurb on the FAQ portion of J.K. Rowling’s website where she stated she “started work” on the Harry Potter Encyclopedia “now.”

Within the past couple of days she updated that question with less exciting news.

First, backstory. This past summer when launching Pottermore, Rowling was asked if there will ever be a printed encyclopedia, to which she replied, “Will there ever be a book, I don’t know at the moment.”

Then last month her revamped website included the following info about the encyclopedia:

For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry’s world, and I have started work on this now – some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity.

That brings us to today, where the above text has been removed and replaced with the following:

What about the Harry Potter Encyclopaedia?

Updated May 2012
I have been enjoying sharing information about Harry’s world on Pottermore for free, and don’t have any firm plans to publish it in book form.

The timing of this is interesting, as today Bloomsbury said that “a new Rowling three-book box set tied into the Potter series” is coming in the next year.

Is Rowling being a troll? Is Bloomsbury lying? We can’t handle all of this uncertainty! Thanks to ThePotterHead.

  • http://twitter.com/laura_gally14 Laura Gallant

Rowling definitely trolling us. At least I certainly hope so…

  • Brandon N

I really really hope that there’s a published encyclopedia. I want a book. I like Pottermore, but I’m not a big fan of the site as a whole. I love books far too much to ever fully convert to a Kindle, Nook, or internet source for me reading pleasure. I am looking forward to whatever Bloomsbury has in store, hopefully something new, if not I shall be a tad disappointed! We shall see!

OMG, Jo has learned to troll….

  • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

I hope it comes out in book-form in some way, even if as an eBook. I prefer tangible paper-books, especially in a reference guide, so I can flip through casually at my leisure. But if it’s just a series of articles like we’re getting in Pottermore, detailing stuff she didn’t have a place for in the series, something I can read from start to finish like a narrative, then I wouldn’t mind having to settle for an eBook.

That being said, I hope there is some form of consolidated information. I find having to trek through Pottermore tedious when all I want is the new information.

  • Emily Ragsdale

Not having firm plans isn’t the same as not having ANY plans.  It might just be going slowly at the moment so she doesn’t want to get everyone’s hopes up!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/G5IS6JY756R2QBDRG7G3TEWMKY Randy

I will be very disappointed if it is not in book form. I want to be able to hold this encyclopaedia in my hands

  • dlskin

This is why I “favorited” all the info in Pottermore so I can find all the info in one area rather than searching through all the moments.  I wish she would just let us have a book!

    • http://www.thatwasdramatic.tumblr.com/ Anya

      That’s what I did too. :)

    • Marie

I think what happened is that when the site was updated, Jo just put in that summary about the encyclopaedia as a confirmation that the idea EXISTED – but then every news station not living in a cave posted headlines like ‘NEW HARRY POTTER BOOK’ and ‘JK ROWLING TO PUBLISH POTTER ENCYCLOPAEDIA’ that almost obligated Jo into writing the book from the number of articles, how much everyone was convinced about it, and the media hype it received.

So I don’t think this latest update is a mid-life crisis or Jo changing her mind or even that a Potter encyclopaedia is a definite no – just dispelling those headlines of a gaurantee to it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1104872004 Lea Booth

Is there already a box set with “Fantastic Beasts”, “Quidditch Through the Ages”, and “Beadle”? Because, if there isn’t, I’d bet that’s the new box set, and I will be so disappointed.

    • Marie

There’s a box set with Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts already. Thorougly confused at the moment.

  • http://www.thatwasdramatic.tumblr.com/ Anya

I wonder if she worries about how the media, etc will judge her if she publishes the Encyclopaedia in book form. Even if it’s for charity, we know there will be people saying “She/Bloomsbury just wants more money [even if she doesn't make any money off it, someone has to], just let Harry Potter go, enough already!”. Pottermore is completely free, everyone already knows it’s Jo’s “thank you” to her fans and that it will be continuously updated. Of course I’d rather have the Encyclopaedia in book form, but Pottermore is already worlds better than the nothing we had until a year ago.

    • Lavender

In all honesty, I don’t think Jo would think twice about that. I would kill for the encyclopaedia, but I think if Jo didn’t write it, it wouldn’t be because she’s worried the media will think she’s milking fans, but because she just wants to move forwards from Potter.

  • Samuel

It could be that she’s waiting to officially announce it after the release of Casual Vacancy and is holding off on information about publishing it until then. I really hope it is published in book form.

J.K Rowling is the Queen of Trolls. She likes manipulating with our Emotions. ALL HAIL QUEEN OF TROLLS!

    NOOOOOOOoooooo! oh no!

  • Andrew_ww

Jo is under the imperius curse

  • Voldy

  • Thomas

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO..WHY U BIG TROLL!? I´ve never been so angry at her like i am now!..SHE´S JUST FOOLING WITH US! WHY!!?? :(

  • Ellatrix

The three book set will probably be The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Quidditch Through the Ages. As a boxed set.

  • Eilif

OH. HELL. NO. I don’t like Pottermore. I think it is awful. The only reason I was excited for Pottermore was because of the sorting. I like games – wait no. I like online games when I was 10. I have school work and am going into IB. I don’t have time to unlock stuff on Pottermore and wait a long time (because I have slow internet connection) for each little thing to load. I just want the new content. I feel like Bloomsbury is manipulating her and trying to be all futuristic. Potter made kids WANT to read. She has been praised to making kids want to read – now she has created a COMPUTER GAME. I just want a book version of an Encyclopedia. I find the content from Pottermore elsewhere. I just don’t have the time. I hope that Jo puts her foot down and says “NO!”. I was so disappointed with Pottermore because of the delays (YEAH. That’s right, there was more than one.) They lost so much excitement about Pottermore that releasing this online will not be as successful. If there was a paper encyclopedia they would get SO much money – which is sort of their goal. As long as it’s not ridiculously priced like the “Ultimate Wizard’s Super Platinum Collection” or whatever the hell it’s called. I LOVE the books. I have read the series and listened to the audiobooks MANY, MANY times. Jo Rowling is an inspiration and I love her. But honestly I just want all this electronic crap to stop. So yeah.

    • Eilif

Also, I LOVE books. NOT the electronic Kindle, Nook, stuff. I like buying an ACTUAL book. I was so upset that Borders has shut down :(

    • guest

since it was Rowling idea to make pottermore it’s a fact it’s not going away  at all until all 7 books are out. (so since it was Her idea I doubt she’s “going to put her foot down”

also i find your sense of entitlement highly offensive, Rowling has enough money that she calls the shots. no one is forcing her to do anything. so who the hell do you think you are to say what’s going on with rowling/her situation? you dont enjoy/have the time for pottermore/etc blah blah blah whine whine whine.

guess what? there are OTHER potter fans Out there Who dont care if it’s books or on pottermore or ebooks, etc.

not to mention Rowling Doesn’t Owe us *or you* anything. so if She wants to do the encyclopedia via pottermore instead is HER decision. Not yours. if she finds releasing stuff online easier then it’s HER choice.

so get off your snobby high horse, cause people like YOU dont call the shots.

  • Han

I really doubt its a re-release of stuff shes already done as we know shes working on things we havent read yet. If it is I’ll be thoroughly annoyed.
We know for a fact that she is working on an Encyclopaedia.
We know for a that this new trio of books is related to Potter in some way…

I had automatically thought that the Encyclopaedia was in the three new books however she’s now said that she has no firm plans to put it down on paper so it makes no sense!

  • RussellTurner

im dying here.. Im sorry, but Pottermore was a huge disappointment

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=17127641 Laura Jurgensmeyer

We got plenty of new content from Pottermore and we’re just going to be getting more and more with the coming books. She doesn’t have to give us anything more so it’s amazing that she has whether it’s through Pottermore or a book form.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

Very true. She doesn’t have to give us anything, and I LOVE Pottermore! Yes, it took a while to open, but when has something gone into BETA perfect and ready to open? While it is annoying to constantly hear yes and no about the encyclopedia, here’s to hoping we finally get a printed or ebook version, Pottermore is going to be the place to get the new info for the time being, and we should all just be grateful for it. Can’t wait for the next books to open on up on it!

    • Tom

Pottermore “was” a disappointment? Pottermore has barely started yet. A lot of people are forgetting we’ve only had the shortest book in the series so far.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=17127641 Laura Jurgensmeyer

And it’s still in beta…and the CEO himself has said that there’s a lot to improve on. It’s only going to get better!

        • Heather123

          It’s not in Beta anymore

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=17127641 Laura Jurgensmeyer

It says “beta” right there on the top of the site.

          • Persia

It’s not in Beta anymore. It’s no longer available to a limited, select number of people for testing to see how the site would bode with the greater public. Everyone can now go sign up and play on Pottermore.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000953499976 Melissa Hippolyte

Please no. I hate reading them on Pottermore. I want BOOKS,like with pages and all right? Please Jo? Please? :(

    • Ella

Print them and staple together :)

  • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

I love her but this “maybe I’ll write it …” “Maybe I’ll publish it in one giant book …” ETC  is for the birds. I’m getting tired of it, Pottermore was a giant flop and this continued milking of the Potter cow is leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth.

    • Plat

The amount of users in Pottermore doubled within a week or two after releasing to the public. Oh yea its a real flop…

      • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

Gross amount of users means very little on the web. One could say they have a million people who signed up for accounts but if only 30% of those accounts are active members viewing the site regularly that million number means diddly squat. As opposed to say a site with 400,000 accounts but with 85-90% active members.

Its a failed gimmick 5 years late.

  • http://about.me/dshana Shana Debusschere

“Is Rowling being a troll?” I hope she is, but I’m afraid not.. Wondering what those three new books are though, and hoping really hard it’s not tales, beasts and quidditch again..

  • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

Nothing beats a good ‘ole book. The feel of the pages, the smell when you first buy it, and the excitement when you first begin reading it. Surely you know this, Jo? :(

  • Zack

Andrew, while there is confirmation of this, I think this new set is the set of Hogwarts library books altogether.

  • Bellatrix

I most certainly do not understand!

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

Joooo!! we love you, but stop playing with our emotions!!

  • LL

Maybe Quidditch throuch the ages - Fantastic beasts and Beedle the bard in a set?

    • sza22

      that’s what i was thinking

  • http://twitter.com/angrykittykj Krystol

IMO… definitely a troll. I don’t really listen to much of anything she says anymore because it’ll most likely change the next day.

    • Ella

When has this been the case for ANYTHING other than the encyclopaedia?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003094208029 Stephanie Evans

Food for thought – Sony is bankrupt. In just a few short years, they will be shut down. So what does that mean for Pottermore?

    • Alex

      1. say who?
      2. i doubt Rowling would let pottermore die/not be finished since it Is the last bit of potter she’s going to give us ever.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003094208029 Stephanie Evans

        found that link on hypable.

        • Mel823

That link is dated May 2011. Plus, Sony Computer Entertainment is just one branch of Sony.

  • Delena

People are saying that they think it’s the Hogwarts Library set, though I’d like to think it’s not. It could be, but what would be the point of adding Tales of Beedle the Bard to Quidditch and Beasts, which is already sold as a set? I don’t think there’d be so much mystery around this whole thing if it was just that. It may be me just hoping that it won’t be a re-release of something I already have, but I think there’s a good chance that we might see something new…maybe.

  • ladybirds

    This is very disappointing :-(

  • Alcyone

Even though everyone seems to think the three book set will be Beedle, Quiddich, and Fantastic Beasts, Bloomsbury made the announcement about the set when discussing future profits. All profits from the three above books went to JK Rowling’s charity. I doubt she would let future sales go to the publishing company instead, so I’m betting on something new. Like many others, I’m really really hoping for another schoolbook set. Hogwarts, a History PLEASE! :)

    • Plat

      OMG this!

  • http://eternalbookshelf.wordpress.com/ Ani Sharmin

Awww … I was really excited for The Scottish Book. I enjoy reading the information on Pottemore, but given what JKR has said in the past, about knowing so much information about the wizarding world, I feel like if it’s only on Pottermore, it’ll be really unwieldy and scattered everywhere, difficult to find if we want to reread.

  • Celithrile

Booooo! I was getting so excited again :( Just get it over with already, you can’t keep dangling this enormous carrot in front of our faces and then drop a statement like that! I love love love Jo, but that’s just being cruel now.

  • Lando Pando

    “Is Rowling being a troll?”
    This made me laugh…

  • Catherine

Um, yeah, that’s a direct contradiction of her previous statement.  That’s not cool.

  • TheGarBar13

JK Rowling is trolling us all! What a noob…

  • Lauren

  • Emily

    Yo Jo Rowling… Y u be trolling?

  • http://twitter.com/xhpfanatic Grace Chen

hahahhhaha “Is Rowling being a troll?”
