Twilight has some of the best quotations in modern young-adult literature. Usually writers write their best and most well-thought quotations when their characters are angry or depressed. Concerning depression, New Moon has no shortage of it.

Here are my top five favorite quotations from New Moon.

5. “ ‘Please.’ It was just a whisper in the blowing rain that tossed my hair and drenched my clothes.”

Bella says that in her mind before jumping off the cliff when her delusion of Edward begs her not to jump. The sentence, “It was just a whisper in the blowing rain that tossed my hair and drenched my clothes” is very atmospheric and expressive for me. It makes feel so IN the story, like I could feel the wind rushing past my face and the waves surrounding me, and makes her heartbreak more real for me. It’s taken out of context, so you probably can’t feel what I’m saying.

4. “I thought briefly of the clichés, about how you were supposed to see your life flash before your eyes. I was so much luckier. Who wanted to see a rerun, anyway?”

Bella says that in her mind while drowning. It’s miserable. I always cried when reading that (and I’m a guy!). Meyer creates deep psychologies for her characters and I think that’s why her characters are sometimes unaccepted. They are too real (even when they’re vampires) that readers are not used to that. They are used to either very good or extremely bad characters, which doesn’t exist in reality. Twilight characters have flaws, just like real people, which makes them perfectly-thought out characters in my opinion.

3. “Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars—points of light and reason….And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.”

Edward said that to Bella after he returned to Forks. It’s not cheesy or overblown for me. I think it’s romantic in a good way. It shows the strength of Meyer’s writing. I always smiled when I read Bella’s response, “Your eyes will adjust.”

2. “Time passes, even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.”

This is the preface of chapter four, the chapter after Edward leaves Bella. Very true. That is the best of Meyer’s writing. There’s nothing more I can say after reading that great quotation without embarrassing myself. It wouldn’t compare.

1. “ ‘I thought we picked the zombie movie,’ I hissed to Jessica.
‘This is the zombie movie.’
‘Then why isn’t anyone getting eaten?’ I asked desperately.
She looked at me with wide eyes that were almost alarmed. ‘I’m sure that part’s coming,’ she whispered.”

Jessica said that to Bella in the movie theater when they went to see a zombie movie, a smart move by a depressed Bella to avoid seeing any kind of romance. That’s my favorite quote from New Moon. Good job, Stephenie!

While it’s not really a quote, my favourite part of New Moon was the pages with just one month listed on it.

    “October                    November                    December                    January”

It was such an effective storytelling mechansim. Plus, the months listed were the Winter months, which made it even more powerful. It was an excellent way to convey so much in so little. It did a better job than 3 pages, outlining Bella’s anguish in detail, ever could. One of Stephenie’s best.

I think you chose really great quotes! I love to see that even guys can love and accept Twilight for what it truly is, a good love story with believable and realistic characters. While it may be obvious that she is a first time writer, she has some achingly beautiful imagery in her words. People should really give her more credit and, you know, actually attempt to read her books instead of just assuming they know everything about the series.

    My favorite quote:

1.) I held myself tightly together. As if I he’d never existed, I thought in despair. What a stupid and impossible promise to make!

I like this quote because it reminds the reader that Bella is not better off without the Cullen family in her life. It reminds us that Edward is very imperfect and his thinking incredibly flawed. It makes both characters very real.

Honestly, my other favorites are on your list already and I can’t come up with anything good.

Thanks! I think Twilight is for all ages and for both genders. A lot of guys like Twilight here, in the Middle East. The notion that only girls like Twilight is only known and, unfortunately, believed in the US and Europe.

My husband actually read the books (But only after reading and falling in love with The Host first) and has seen all the movies with me. He isn’t a fan, but he is tolerant and he defends them.

      • Chellearia

My husband and his brother and all my other male friends (ages from teens to fifties) both read and liked the series, and my husband goes with me to the movies.

      • LadyLovesLeo

That is refreshing to hear.  People here in the US think they are so open minded, but in reality that is very rarely true.

        You go, boy!

I like that last quote….as a play on people who didn’t really know what twilight was

“ ‘I thought we picked the [vampire book],’ I hissed to Jessica.
    ‘This is the [vampire book].’
‘Then why isn’t anyone getting eaten?’ I asked desperately.
She looked at me with wide eyes that were almost alarmed. ‘I’m sure that part’s coming,’ she whispered.”

    :) hah

Yeah, you know I never really thought of that!

Alas, another soul that loved this quote as much as I do:

“Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars — points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.”

This quote alone made that book that much better for me. Great choices!

you do know that alas means sadly, don’t you?

What makes these stories so compelling is that despite being mythical charcters the are real. sometimes painfully so, sometimes joyfully so. But always honest. I love hearing others favorite quotes. These are mine off the top of my head. I’m sure if I put more thought into it I would have more…

“How could they guess that I was standing there enjoying an unexpected
    moment of insanity?”~Bella, New Moon

“When I left you, Bella, I left you bleeding. Jacob was
the one to stitch you back up again. That was bound to leave its mark — on both
of you. I’m not sure those kinds of stitches dissolve on their own. I can’t
blame either of you for something I made necessary. I may gain forgiveness, but
that doesn’t let me escape the consequences.” (Edward)

The prince was never coming back to kiss me awake from my
enchanted sleep. I was not a princess, after all. So what was the fairy-tale
protocol for other kisses? The mundane kind that didn’t break any spells?
    (Bella)

  • Tulip79

“Your hold is permanent and unbreakable,” he whispered. Never doubt that.” That has always stuck with me from the first time I read it.

  • Clfish

I think Edwards toast to Bella at the wedding is so beautiful and may be used at quite a few weddings.

  • Clarinet2357

I think these are mostly pretty trite.  *shrugs* To each his own…

I thought this was going to be making fun of New Moon & the so-called author. What a disappointment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thecoolguy4ever Ahmed Tarek Saad

Too bad, it didn’t turn out like you wanted. And I think Meyer is an author, not a so-called one, just like you are a very annoying person, not a so-called one.

    • VioletTreeman

A book doesn’t have to be an incredible piece of literature to be strong writing.  For me a ‘good’ book involves an interesting concept, intriguing characters, memorable writing, and (some sort of) strong feeling/emotion once I have completed a novel and Stephenie Meyer achieved all these things, even if at some point I feel the book was edited in the dark.  I don’t think you can ever fault an author in their work.  Fault a publisher for publishing it if you think shouldn’t have been published, fault the colours for not looking the way you think they should o the cover or the words on the page.  Fault the media for capitalizing on a sensation or a production company for hiring a script writer or director.  Fault the fans for their excessive gushing or yourself for not liking it.  Butnever fault author and their story.  It is theirs and they have written it to the point which they are happy, not you.

    • Amelia

I thought she was being sarcastic… xD

      • http://www.facebook.com/thecoolguy4ever Ahmed Tarek Saad

She? It’s a guy who wrote that article and that guy is me!

  • Taylor_is_a_sexy_BEAST

This is amazing! This really bring backs memories. I think I’m going to go back and re-read all the books this summer.

  • Alison

Honestly, I think you should read some classics. There are some brilliant lines out there. These are just ok. Actually, they’re a bit cliched.

  • VioletTreeman

What about Edward’s repsonse to Bella’s “Your eyes will adjust?” I’ve appreciated that Stephenie wrote “That’s just it.  They can’t”

  • Samantha

The first line doesn’t really make sense. It mixes the metaphors of whispering and rain.  I get what it’s trying to say, but that’s not the most effective way of writing it.
