This morning, Pottermore announced that “you can now visit the library on Pottermore and read excerpts from selected books.”

In typical Pottermore fashion, it was very unclear what this announcement meant. Excerpts from the e-books? Excerpts from books we’ve already read? What library? Is this material new?

After searching Twitter, and lots of mindless clicking, it’s beginning to become clear. J.K. Rowling has written excerpts of books found within the Hogwarts library, and they’re readable as of today if you find them hidden in Pottermore Moments that are set in the library (specifically chapters 12, 14, and 15).

Below are links to all five. Special thanks to @Larissafoo who helped us find all of these!

- “A Beginner’s Guide to Transfiguration”: When Transfiguring, it is important to make firm and decisive wand movements. Do not wiggle or twirl your wand unnecessarily, or the Transfiguration will certainly be unsuccessful. (more)

- “One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi”: Dittany is a powerful healing herb and restorative and may be eaten raw to cure shallow wounds. (more)

- “Curses and Counter-Curses”: The Tickling Spell: Point your wand directly at your enemy and shout ‘Titillando!’ (more)

- “The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1)”: Charms differ from Transfiguring Spells in the following manner: a charm adds certain properties to an object or creature, whereas a transfiguring spell will change it into something utterly different. (more)

- “The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection”: Werewolf bites should be thoroughly and magically cleaned, as the werewolf’s fangs are venomous. However, there is no cure once you have become a werewolf, so try and avoid being bitten at all costs. (more)

Give ‘em all a read on Pottermore. What do you think of these small tidbits of new material?

  • Nicole

    Curses and Counter Curses:
The Tickling spell: Point your wand directly at your enemy and shout “Titillando”The leg locker curse: point your wand directly at your enemy and shout “Locomotor Mortis!”The full Body-Bind: point your wand directly at your enemy and shout “Petrificus Totalus!”Tongue-Tying Spell: Point your wand directly at your enemy and shout “Mimble-wimble!”Jelly-Legs Curse: Point your wand directly at your enemy and shout “Locomotor Wibbly!”

    • pepperpotts

That’s such a lie. The Jelly-Legs Jinx is “jellify” and the counter curse is “unjellify”. We all know that from AVPM.

  • Nicole

Ah, I was too slow, you added them already :P It wasn’t that hard Andrew, you just had to click around…

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

I had went through the three library scenes and clicked around trying to find the books.. I could only find one on my own.  I found other books that went into my “Trunk,” but when I went to my Trunk they weren’t readable.

      • Tom

You just have to scan your mouse over all the shelves.

        • Marie

I’ve been doing that like mad for the last 10 minutes, not working for me either.

          • Nicole

If you do it too fast, then the books won’t show up, try slowing going across the shelves…

          • M Elmagrissy

            Thank you. :)

  • guest

I can’t find the books in chapter 12 or chapter 14.

what do I have to click to find them??!

    help pleaseee

Most notable thing revealed: zombies exist in the Potter world.

  • Pixie

Actually, these are not library books. These are the textbooks that have been purchased from Flourish & Blotts (while shopping in Diagon Alley). Therefore, in order to read the new material, you don’t even have to go to the library. There is another way of going about this:
Go to Chapter 5, Moment 1 (Harry Goes Shopping). On the left, below “Read About”, go to the fourth board “Books”, which has a list of all the books found in the Chapter. Clicking on the title of each book will give you new information. But, if you want to “unlock” information, then, I suppose, you might as well go to the library (as mentioned in the article).

NEW J.K. ROWLING CONTENT?! This just made my DAY. THIS IS WHY I JOINED POTTERMORE :)

  • http://twitter.com/dan4eva Gena Marie de Leon

    found them all…

they’re all kept in obscure places…

    • Alex

what do you mean “obscure places” like places where there are shadows??

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003217053155 Liliana Baptista

I can’t for the life of me unlock ‘curses and counter curses’…

    • Hermione Jean

Me neither!  I’ve been looking for over half an hour, and even with the hints from others, I still cannot find it.  Now I know that we can read the new content at the “End of Chapter 12″ page, but I really want to find the book so that the lock is gone! lol

      • HarryHungerAvatar12

        it’s next to the window.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003217053155 Liliana Baptista

I suggest using another browser. Tried with IE at school and it appeares immediately (go figure!)…

        • Hermione Jean

That’s exactly what happened!  It was simply not there, so I opened it in Firefox (I had been using Chrome) and it was right there!  Crazy! lol

Can’t find Beginners Guide to Transfiguration

    • FelicisQueen7643

just press your forward key once and the bookcase on the left side is where the book is hidden.. just hover all over the left side and you’ll see it.

  • hpfanguest

Found Them!! *finally it was SO hard*

ch12- “curses and counter curses” is in the library scene  on the real dark/away from light bookshelves on the farrr back near the window.

ch 14- “Standard book of spells” is behind Ron in the “hagrid secret” scene,

ch15- 1. one thousands magical herbs and fungi” is on the second table in front of the blue windows, next to the other books.
           2. “Dark forces: a guide to self protection” is on one of those HUGE tall bookcases behind the chandelier on the left side.

    3. “beginners guide to transfiguration” **the HARDEST to find** is on the third book case to the left *like in the middle of the room to the left*

that should help frustrated people trying to find them!

  • http://twitter.com/noah_ott Noah Otten

This is what makes Pottermore great: the new content. If they released material like this more often, I would definitely visit the site more. I honestly haven’t visited for a good month or so now. Looking forward to reading these!

  • http://www.twitter.com/matsemann08 Matsemann08

Pottermore, the first website in the world where “Forgotten your username?” is more used than “Forgotten your password?”.

  • Nicole

If you change the url when your in the moments to book 2 for example:  http://www.pottermore.com/en/book2/chapter1 it says: Be patient, this page will be unlocked very soon. Parts of the experience are locked so that the story is not spoiled for you. Does this mean chamber of secrets is closer than we thought?

    • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

Let’s hope so! If you change it to the other books, it just says pages vanished . . .

      • Nicole

Yeah, which means we might not see POA for a long time :l …

  • Travis

For 3 of the books I had to finish the chapter they were in (12, 14, or 15) before they would actually be unlocked for me.

  • HarryHungerAvatar12

    Found all of them:

Chapter 12 The Library: when you press the forward key two times then you see a clear window on the right side of the library. A little left from the side is the the book called “Curses and Counters Curses”

Chapter 14 Hagrid Secret’s: Right behind Ron on the left side of the library is the Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1)

Chapter 15 Harry Becomes a OutCast:

    1. One Thousands Magical Herbs and Fungi: on the second table and in front of the huge window .

    2. Dark forces: a guide to self protection: it’s in the huge bookcase way in the back side of the library to the left side.

    3. Beginners Guide to Transfiguration: press your forward key once and the bookcase on the left side is where the book is hidden.

I hope that gave you some clues I guess.

    • Melody

Do you think she only released this to certain users?  For me, there is nothing next to the window; Ron is covered by the “Read About” menu AND there is nothing behind him; and nothing in the library is clickable.  Is this because I already bought the books, or is my first question right?

      • HarryHungerAvatar12

You do know that Ron is in the right side of the library not the left.

        • Melody

Guess my browser doesn’t do a good job of distinguishing hair color; still no luck on that one no matter where I hover or which browser I use.  Found the others, though.

    • Melody

Also, I hovered as slowly as I could over these places, and still nothing happened.  And I finished all of Book 1.  What gives?

    • FelicisQueen7643

Thankssss so much!! That’s almost everyting. Helped me alot. XD lol

    • FelicisQueen7643

But I think I have a problem.. I can’t find Standard Book of Spells(Grade 1). The direction is clear to me but still, it won’t highlight purple even though I hovered all over the place….

  • http://eternalbookshelf.wordpress.com/ Ani Sharmin

Thanks for posting this! I could only find a couple of the books myself and searched for hints from others to find the rest.

Some of this information, we knew already, though a few things are new. I like learning about some of the Dark Forces and Magical Herbs and Fungi. Hopefully, Pottermore will release book 2 and/or more new content soon. I hope this is a hint that things are coming sooner, rather than later.

  • Azeem

Cheers for the update, Andrew! You’re the best!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

Anyone know what the locked part in the navigation bar is? I thought it was going to be the shop, but now I’m not sure . . .

    • GuestSpeaker

I’m most certain it will be Hogsmeade and will be unlocked  in the 3rd book

  • http://www.facebook.com/hklein0 Heather Klein

I literally cannot unlock any of these. I’m frustrated. :(

  • Plat

Where is Curses and Counter Curses? Ive searched every little nook and cranny of “Chapter 12 The Library” moment and just cannot seem to find it anywhere!

    • Ashley_fuller_olsen

Chapter 12 The Library: when you press the forward key two times then you see a clear window on the right side of the library. A little left from the side is the the book called “Curses and Counters Curses”

  • Plat

That is way awesome! Great to see they are adding more features to make the first book even more amazing. Now I’m more excited for COS! Hoping it comes very soon.

  • Plat

Now I hope that Hogwarts: A History will have an excerpt in the future!

  • Elena Venturi

I think there’s a particular order to unlocking the books, I can’r remember wich I found first but I did notice that they popped up in places I had already gone over that had picked up nothing before

  • Disqus

I am so freaking excited for this! I’ve always wanted to read these. Can we get the whole book at some point? Please?

  • Emma

I’m debating whether or not this makes it worth going back on Pottermore for a little while.

  • Moira Silverheart
  • Delena

Even looking at visual guides, the book that is supposed to be the Standard Book of Spells Grade 1 still isn’t glowing purple when I move my mouse over it. Gaaah computers.

  • Tomas

HOW DO YOU EVEN GO TO THE LIBRARY?

    • Plat

If you read the article you’d know lol.

  • Hermione Jean

If anyone is rolling their mouse over the right place but are still not seeing the book highlight, try opening Pottermore in another web browser.  That’s what I had to do to make the last one appear.

  • writeworld

    YAY!

  • Dswilborn

In IE, the Standard Book of Spells won’t light up at all. In Chrome, it lights up and pops up a Read Me button, but it is not clickable. I don’t have any other browser options and am really annoyed.
BTW, same thing happens for me in chapter one with “Measurements” – the same exact thing, and both of those items are on the left side of the page!! Coincidence?

  • Rin68nyr

Having no luck so far on IE, Chrome OR Firefox….I hope they work out these kinks soon!!!

  • Santiarof

I love Pottermore. I’m on “nicholas flamel” right now! Though i can’t brew potions succesfully

  • Awesomeanna

I <3 Pottermore and I am pretty good at the potions!

  • Bubbles

LOVE THESE TIDBITS!!!! ESPECIALLY SINCE I SUGGESTED IT!!! :D :D :D

  • hpfan

I found another book in the library. It’s called Book of Spells and lies on a shelf over Curses and Counter-Curses in the library. I like the film ;D
