A couple days ago we told you that J.K. Rowling’s manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was going on display in London.

Now, someone at a Harry Potter site called MuggleNet has stopped by the exhibition and snapped pictures of it.

Most noteworthy is the fact that we see the original names of Hedwig and Dudley. According to Rowling’s own writing, Dudley was originally named Didsbury and Hedwig was called Kallicrater.

MuggleNet’s report also notes another interesting change:

The next passage, all crossed out, references Harry’s familiar habit of putting up a calendar and counting down the days until he goes to Hogwarts. This makes a reappearance in the next few books, but was excluded from Philosopher’s Stone if memory serves me right.

Another small change is that in this draft, apparently the academic year starts nine days earlier. Harry approached Vernon on the eve of his journey via Hogwarts Express, and the date is given as “August twenty-first,” which would mean the journey itself would be August 22nd – and as we all know, the journey is always on September 1st in the books (which is seemingly always a Sunday – like magic!).

You can hit this page on MuggleNet to see the manuscript pages for yourself, though they are hard to make out unless you’re there in person.

“a Harry Potter site called Mugglenet”?

    • http://twitter.com/when_she_smiles lindsay

pretty sure it was a joke.

      • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

        Yes, it was.

        • Sujay

           no it wasn’t…….

          • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriFSargeant Harri Sargeant

        • Azeem

          I agree.

          • http://Hypable.com/ James Bean

Yeah. You obviously know a lot more about what he was trying to say than he did when he wrote it.

    • http://twitter.com/brookesalmons brooke salmons

This sums up my exact thoughts lol.

(also quite glad she changed those names)

  • puppyglasses

Mugglenet – the site Andrew “redesigned” (you’re a shit designer btw), and then left to create his own site.

    • Tom

      That’s nice.

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

      • Glaciusx

        Hahaha “puppyglasses”

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

I didn’t redesign the site… I did lay out the structure, but I didn’t make the graphics and what not.  Thanks for the immature insult though.

    • rdh014

      …dude. Rude.
Where exactly is your website considered one of the most popular HP fan websites?? Hmm??

      • puppyglasses

maybe english is not your first language so you do not understand anything.

        • rdh014

That is the dumbest response ever. Go troll somewhere else.

  • Guest

Anrew i kind of like you but seriously, your bitchiness towards Mugglenet kind of reminds me of fat Perez Hilton… just saying

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

      • sarahd15

No worries Andrew, the people that matter understood :)

      • LilyLuna

Lol, poor Andrew. I got it, I thought it was funny. :]

      • Ella

bahahahahaha it’s a joke that made my day!

    • Hermione Granger

      “fat Perez Hilton” …what…

  • Guest

Between outright wrong reporting and this slam on MuggleNet (who got the exclusive – and it just sounds like andrew is bitter, but still wants to report the news), hypable’s kinda going downhill.

Also, what editor of a site comments back to people in caps lock? tacky.

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

How is this wrong reporting?  And again, it wasn’t a slam.  It was a “hah, as if I don’t know who MuggleNet is…”

      • moonshoespotter1712

Back in the days, huh? :)

    • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriFSargeant Harri Sargeant

Between making outright wrong assumptions in your comment and this slam on Andrew (who is posting this news so those people who don’t use Mugglenet will see the story - and by the way, Andrew not only mentioned MN multiple times but also linked to their story), “Guest” comment trolls are kinda going downhill.

Also, what person thinks it’s their right to pass judgement on someone or a situation they know nothing about? tacky.

    • Sarah

As a journalist, “Guest,” I can say that this is actually outright right reporting. Andrew gave credit where credit is due. And I have no idea how this could possible be considered “a slam on Mugglenet.” Please. The real question is why are you so upset about this?

    • applepie

      Is there a dislike button?

  • Lesancy

Andrew, in order to understand tongue-in-cheek humor and sarcasm (“a Harry Potter site called Mugglenet…”, you’re simply brilliant!!), a certain level of intelligence is required, and it looks like no one really possesses it (the comments to this article truly prove this fact). Therefore, my advice to you would be – Respond to only those comments which truly deserve a response. If people don’t understand your brand of humor, that’s their problem, not yours. Coming to the article, shouldn’t this info on Dudley and Hedwig have come out on Pottermore instead?

  • JCman7

    I liked the joke :)

    • blablablah

      i dont get it :D

  • http://twitter.com/Wondersstruck Mackenzie

    haha I see what you did their Andrew (;
Just curious, are you participating in Mugglenet’s entire series reread?

Also, chill out guys it was a joke!

  • http://twitter.com/twixie09 Lauren Gizzi

Those names were…interesting. haha Kallicrater?? o.O

And Andrew, like Lesancy said, just ignore the idiots. :P I got the joke right away; it’s not your fault when some don’t.

  • writeworld

That always confused me. If the train leaves on 1 September, then how can term start on 1 September, as they don’t begin classes until the next day? Does the train leave on Sunday and classes start Monday, or does the train leave on Monday and classes start on Tuesday?

Also, from HPatPS, Ch 6: “Every night before he went to sleep, Harry ticked off another day on the
piece of paper he had pinned to the wall, counting down to September
the first.” Seems like Harry made himself a calender and kept track of the days left before Hogwarts to me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003217053155 Liliana Baptista

Term starts on September 1st, because the feast and the sorting are on September 1st, even if classes only start the next day…

  • Matthewhpg

I see what you did there…lol

  • Ryan Olsen

You people are so damn immature.  It was a joke.  I laughed.  Andrew, don’t listen to any of these people.  They just have to find something to be bitter about in order to be happy in life I suppose.

  • http://marimbaimba.tumblr.com/ audrey

andrew, your joke is funny. everyone else is ridiculous.

  • rdh014

HA! I had to reread cus I just skipped to the info section, but i’m loving the cheekiness Andrew!

  • Zack

Ignore the idiots, Andrew. They are too blind to recognize an innocent joke.

  • Sarah

Wow, people. I laughed out loud at Andrew’s little bit of sarcasm. Lighten up. I don’t know why you all seem to have so much animosity toward him. And let’s be real, as much as I used to love Mugglenet, Hypable is kind of a superior site. A one-stop shop. This website is brilliant.

    • Sarah

Before I get hate comments, I should clarify that I find Hypable superior news-wise because it covers all the fandoms I love. Obviously the two sites themselves are very different.

      • Emma

Me too! I love knowing that if I need news on something outside of my fandoms, I can go to Hypable and find it without getting lost.

  • Han

Geeez louise, I think some people need some chillax pills, oh myyy.
Anyway back to the topic at hand which was the post, Hedwigs alternative name really cracked me up, can you imagine John Williams unveiling his new soundtrack, Kallicrater theme? LMAO.

  • Becca

Ha, I found it funny, but there’s always going to be people that go crazy, they can’t help it!

Anyway, i’m glad she changed Hedwig’s name….. Kallicrater doesn’t sound so nice.

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

“at a Harry Potter site called MuggleNet”…. lol, id say most fans know what the #1 Potter site is called

    • Emma

Oh, I thought it was called The Leaky Cauldron to be honest.

      • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

hahahaha…. at the height of potter-mania, they were pretty neck-and-neck

        • Mouse

I like both! Mugglenet is huge and very international, and Leaky has a very close, fun community. Both sites are awesome. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/iDomi Domi Ed

Ugh, not even going to read through the comments.
    I may kick something.

I got your joke Andrew, I love you so fuck the haters.

  • guest

    Just lol

  • Azeem

I’m sorry, but I don’t know what the joke it. Maybe it’s because I’m stupid or that I just don’t know the background information. Is there anyone who is kind enough to explain it to me (and by the way, I don’t have twitter, just in case that is what this ‘joke’ has something to do with it).

    • Azeem

Sorry, but I am definitely stupid. Just ignore the comment above. *Man I’m dumb*!

    • Liderc

Andrew made a joke about “some Harry Potter website called Mugglenet” in the article.  The joke was that Andrew was a huge part of Mugglenet for many years, so those who’ve known about his involvement and passion for Mugglenet obviously caught the joke.  Those who aren’t, didn’t, or they simply can’t read between the lines.

  • hpboy13

Yeah, I got really confused when I saw that bit of the manuscript – I really had to squint and try to figure out what the passage was supposed to be talking about.  I’m even more amused by Didsbury though – that name really doesn’t mesh with Ton-Tongue Toffees in my head.

I wish they’d displayed more pages, since these were such a treasure trove of information, but glad I got to see them anyway.

Thanks for linking to my report Andrew!  And always appreciating your humor :)

  • moonshoespotter1712

Man, is that really what people first thought when reading that sentence? Why do people always assume the worst? I’m sure he’s very very grateful for the time and appreciates what it did to establish his career. Goodness gracious me.

Anyway, love ya, Andrew! Keep up with the humour.

  • Alison

OK, this is the comments thread ever.

  • Emily Zitterkopf

lol people are will use any reason to hate.  who cares?  it was a joke, obviously.  Emmerson and Andrew are still on good terms from what I can tell so I highly doubt he would slam MuggleNet

  • rdh014

When did this article go from being about the “Philosopher’s Stone” manuscript to whether or not Andrew is funny?

  • Phantomfluteplayer

Yeah, when I read “someone at a Harry Potter site called MuggleNet” I actually laughed. It was funny. It didn’t occur to me that some people were too slow to get the joke. Of course Andrew knows what Mugglenet is and respects it. It wasn’t a “slam against them” or whatever everyone else is calling it. It was just a little personality inserted into a good article. Chill people…

Also, I do prefer the current names. Kallikrater kind of makes me giggle. Hedwig sounds much more dignified in my opinion.

  • batwane-bruceman

This is great that Andrew wrote this. Haha “someone at a Harry Potter site called MuggleNet” and then he actually quotes his own ex-site.

    • OhBells!

He actually quotes himself, if memory serves me correctly. It made me giggle :)

  • LGray1983

I’m not even sure how you would pronounce Kallicrater! In my head, it sounds really ugly and not even like a name. Also, Didsbury just sounds like…a brand or company of some kind, not a person. So glad she changed these names. If anything, it’s interesting information.

Also, I think Andrew was just kidding about the Mugglenet thing. He still works on the podcast, so obviously he doesn’t have some kind of weird rivalry with them.

    • Isak

Considering Andrew was part of the Mugglenet staff for years until moving on to Hypable, I think it was more of an inside joke.

  • LGray1983

I didn’t even think it was a joke… I didn’t know what MuggleNet was so it was pretty helpful to me…

  • MuggleNet

this kray andrew is my homegirl yo

  • http://twitter.com/MaybeDavey David Weckesser

  • Reem

I wish the majority of the comments was actually about the news Andrew is reporting rather than all this drama.
I’m so glad Rowling changed the names, though Didsbury does suit Dudley, but Kallicrater? Nooo.

  • Glaciusx

Kallicrater sounds like a creature that would bite you if you got too close to it and Didsbury is just plain wrong. Btw, all the people yelling at Andrew are stupid. It was a joke….get over it.
