“Avengers assemble!” is a catchphrase that anyone could identify, even before The Avengers shattered worldwide box office records, and yet the phrase was not uttered during the film.

According to this interview at io9 (via CBM) with Marvel producer Kevin Feige, there just wasn’t a place for it in the film.

“There wasn’t a right place for it, it was cheesy overtime. Here’s what I like, the catch phrase that you might expect is not in that movie, but people will walk out of that movie with many different catch phrases. ‘We have a Hulk’ being one of them, that people already use. We didn’t say [to director Joss Whedon] ‘You have to say it in the movie!’ We did say, ‘Is it going to fit anywhere, can you do it anywhere?’ And Joss looked. That 360 shot (which is my favorite moment in the whole movie) — if right at the end of that, he goes ‘Avengers Assemble!’ [then] well, we just assembled. You do it without saying, it gives more impact.”

What do you think? Would you have liked to hear the phrase? Where would you have put it in the film?

Yes, it would have become cheesy.

I’m surprised they didn’t have it dubbed in during the 360 shot in the trailer. That wiuld’ve been cool. But I don’t think it would’ve worked in the actual movie

For a kids movie, sure, it would’ve worked. But for a sophisticated movie like this, it would’ve been SO cheesy.

For me, the best catch phrase was ‘HULK, SMASH’ !

i defiantly think that it would have been cheesy…they could have done something like “…its time to assemble”

Yep, I agree, it would’ve been cheesy. The movie was just fine without it. So fine I’m going to see it again tomorrow night!

Maybe for the second film. I can imagine it being like a text message.

I think there might have been a way to work it in with out it being cheesy. But since it is a movie about the team first being formed, maybe that catchphrase would be better placed in Avengers 2? I suppose Fury could call it in to get everyone back. Or maybe Rogers gets tech-savy and sends a text to everyone? lol It definitely should make it into A2 somehow.

Hadn’t really thought about it not being in the movie.  He’s right, could have been cheesy, especially with Chris Evans saying it(he makes wood look flexible).

I think leaving it out was a good choice; it would sound too cheesy.
But maybe in the second movie I could picture Tony Stark saying in it in his sarcastic tone.

    I loove that 360 shot :)

nah I agree with the director its a super cheesy line, and the film was already filled enough with one liners & comedy moments

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

It wouldn’t have worked in a Joss Whedon film, anyway. The man is one of the only filmmalers with the right to be loud about his action, because everything else is so organic with him. For a sequel, perhaps, during an early sequence where he calls them all in. But Whedon is the type that will test something out, even if it’s impulsive, and if it doesn’t work he’ll let it go. If Joss says it doesn’t work, we have to trust that it just doesn’t work.

since the uk title is called The Avengers Assemble, it doesnt really matter

  • Shantelle

I prefer Clench up Legolas over We have a Hulk but that is just me.

  • DylanAwesome

I enjoyed the fact that Tony Stark called them “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” at one point in time. That’s referred to a TON in the comics.

  • Azeem

It sounds a bit camp, and I think it would just ruin the film if Cap said ‘Avengers assemble!’. It sounds better if you read comic books, where it is for a younger demographic than The Avengers.

  • Mugglable

You say “anyone could identify” the phrase, but I had never heard it before until reading this post (I’m not into comic books).  To answer your question, I think it sounds cheesy and I’m glad it didn’t make it in the film.
