Michael Arndt is currently in talks with Lionsgate to re-write the Catching Fire script, whose draft was originally completed in March.

First, some catch up: Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) nabbed the Catching Fire screenwriter position in January. We learned in early March that author Suzanne Collins was reading the script after Beaufoy had completed it, working closely with Collins.

That brings us to today, as Heat Vision reports:

The sequel is barreling towards a late summer production start. While Lionsgate doesn’t yet have a deal with Arndt, if he signs on, he will have to work double-time to get the script ready due to a squeezed schedule caused by star Jennifer Lawrence’s commitment to Fox’s X-Men: First Class sequel. (That tight schedule was one reason why Ross declined to take on the project.)

The reason for why Arndt has been asked to re-write the script is unknown. If we were to guess? The addition of director Francis Lawrence also meant a change in writing direction.

Arndt wrote the well-received films Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine.

Nononononononononono!! The LAST thing this film needs is more rushed schedules! Nononononononononono!! This is not good. Not good at all.

  • Tiana

After yesterday’s news about Francis signing on, I felt so relieved but now. . not so much :/

  • Glaciusx

They’re so going to ruin it. Hah, it’s funny how my favorite one is the one that’s gonna suck. Ugh. Why are they rushing?! I honestly would not mind waiting until early 2014 to see this movie. As long as it’s good, not rushed, and can make me feel the same way The Hunger Games did, then I don’t see why they can’t slow the fuck down.

    • Emma

In all honesty, the wait would kill me, although I understand that would be the smart alternative, as opposed to a sloppy film.

    • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

The problem is Jennifer Lawrence’s schedule. If they don’t film it late this year, they probably won’t be able to film it until late next year or early 2014 so the movie would come out late 2014 or early 2015 if they wait until after X-Men. So, slowing down simply is not an option.

      • Sapph

I can not get angry with Jennifer here. She is a great actress and a great Katniss!

        • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

I’m not saying to be mad with Jennifer! Just her schedule.

          • Sapph

I know, just saying my point of view :p

  • akacj18

i liked both those movies. lets hope he’s a fast writer.

    • hpatdh33

Think how long it took toy story 3 to come out.  Maybe he’s a really slow writer.  Maybe he will write the scenes the day of filming like Pirates 2 and 3.

  • Leigh

Wow. Things are really not looking good for Catching Fire.  They should have just had Jennifer do X-Men first and then pushed Catching Fire back later.  I’d rather wait and have a good movie than be disappointed with something sloppy and rushed.

This is a fairly common practice in the film industry. Like when Billy Ray’s original Hunger Games script got re-worked by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins.

I don’t see why this is a big deal at all. Personally I’m just happy that they had two great writers working on it in Beaufoy and now Arndt.

Good point, though I feel like in this case they’re in more of a time crunch.

      • http://twitter.com/Thomassholan Thomas Sholan

Totally agree with that aspect of it. It is the only thing that concerns me, but as long as Suzanne is involved I trust that it will turn out fine.

        • EmHof

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to say this isn’t uncommon in the film industry. The same happened with ‘Moneyball’ when Aaron Sorkin was brought in to help re-write the script. A lot of times it makes stories better, especially if they have a pedigree like Beaufoy and Arndt. Also, scripts and scenes are sometimes rewritten up to the minute they shoot, kind of like what Joss Whedon did with Avengers.

I agree, but that being said I was not impressed with the script for the Hunger Games at all. It could have been so much better! It lacked depth and they hardly used any quotes from the book. I really hope they do a good job with this one.

Again why not wait to start filming until after X-Men!!! Lawerence isn’t the main character in that! At least then we’d know the movie will be a good one because it’s had plenty of time to make it great.

Unfortunately, the second X-Men is focusing more on Magneto’s team, meaning Jennifer WILL play a big role.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

I’m pretty sure they added a lot of scenes for Jennifer just cause she is so famous now.

  • http://twitter.com/aadnama Amanda Douglas

Something tells me that if Suzanne read it in March, then maybe she wasn’t really impressed with it. “Working closely” could mean many things, and her not liking the script is the only reason that I see them wanting a re-write.

Lionsgate cannot just simply push this thing back, but rush it for a 2013 release.I am really getting nervous,

  • http://twitter.com/Super_Lulu1 Lupita

I’m not gonna freak out just yet. This already happened with the first movie & everything turned out fine. The way I see it we had Simon Beaufoy who wrote Slumdog Millionaire & now we get yet another talented writer Arndt freaking wrote Toy Story 3!!!!!! Plus im guessing Suzanne Collins will be involved right? If anything Catching Fire might just be THE BEST WRITTEN MOVIE in the world!

I must first see a trailer for CF then if it sucks I can start crying lol!

  • gcw07

I’m guessing this is happening for a couple of reasons. For starters I think Lionsgate was counting on Ross to again work with Collins on making changes to the initial draft. When Ross left, they need a new writer to actually make those changes and they don’t want to leave it up to just Collins. There may also be changes by Lawrence (the directory, not Jennifer). Who knows, maybe they want Gale to now accompany them on the tour or into the arena (I’m praying that they don’t want to do something stupid like this, like they wanted to do in the first movie).

  • Melissa

Oh good grief. This is getting really ridiculous. They are rushing this movie something fierce and I’m getting very nervous that its going to turn out to be a hot mess. I wish they would have just waited for X-Men, but noooo. Lionsgate has to have their money as soon as possible. I just hope it doesn’t come back and bite them in the a**.

  • Babs

They are hiring a new writer because Collins wasn’t pleased with the first draft. Beaufoy took out the Victory Tour completely from the script and she didn’t like that.

    • http://twitter.com/aadnama Amanda Douglas

Oh wow. How did you find this out? If this is true, then I’m glad they’re wanting a re-write. The Victory Tour played a HUGE role in the book. I knew they were going to have to shorten it a bit, but to cut it out completely? That’s ridiculous.

    • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

yeah, this sounds reliable  … not

  • Lando Pando

The writer of Toy Story is writing the Hunger Games?
Does this seem strange to anyone else?

    • trackerjacker

He didn’t only write Toy Story, he also wrote Little Miss Sunshine which is a much more serious movie.  I have faith in him.

  • Anna-FilmGirl

My faith in this movie is declining steadily… Thanks, Lionsgate.

    • Al

Oh my god.Just shut up already!

  • Vantage

I hope this time, haste doesn’t make haste. I have a huge trust on Lions Gate.

  • hpatdh33

That was the one thing I still had faith in Catching Fire was the script written by Simon Beaufoy, now I can honestly say this movie will probably be a disaster.  Rushing this movie is not a good idea.

  • Zack

Suzanne has a huge say on the script, right? That may be why Beaufoy left. If Suzanne okays it, it should be fine, guys!

  • trackerjacker

I love Michael Arndt. He wrote Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine.  Little Miss Sunshine is my one of my favorite movies of all time.  AND I actually had Arndt’s brother as a college professor for my Literary Analysis class and they are both insanely smart.  I have faith that he’ll do a good job.
