The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine hits shelves tomorrow, and contained within is a revealing interview with showrunner Steven Moffat. Ahead of the official release, several snippets have made their way online which reveal some interesting things about Amy and Rory, UNIT, the series arc and Jenna-Louise Coleman! This post contains spoilers.

Doctor Who TV revealed the tidbits from issue #446, which you can see below – we’ve marked particularly interesting parts in bold.

  • Rory and Amy are no longer regular travelers with the Doctor: “If he thinks he needs them, he just pops in on them,” but, “Each time they’ll get a little older.”
  • Moffat on killing off companions: “Even if I don’t think I’ll do it…maybe I will do it!”
  • Moffat ponders, “If we did a UNIT story, would Martha be there?
  • The Special Weapons Dalek will definitely appear in the opener
  • Moffat reiterates that the New Paradigm Daleks are an “officer class”
  • Can the question “Doctor Who?” be answered? “Wait and see”
  • We will find out exactly what Trenzalore is all about
  • “The Fall of the Eleventh” will also be resolved (perhaps not in Series 7 though)
  • Moffat is very keen that the order of the episodes can be swapped around this time
  • There will still be a story arc, but it will be “the opposite” of Series 6
  • Even though he said no more two-parters, they are still possible if the story requires them
  • Jenna-Louise’s companion will be different to the others and is “going to be a shock”
  • Filming will continue throughout the rest of 2012 and further into 2013 and beyond

Given the revelation that UNIT will be appearing in the fourth episode of the next series, we anticipate that a return from Martha is a very real possibility. With filming also continuing throughout the rest of this year and next, we expect LOTS of material for the big 50th anniversary special in 2013.

Hypable will have full scans of the interview, and other points of interest from the latest issue early tomorrow.

Would you like to see Martha return? In what ways do you think the dynamic will change now that Amy and Rory will no longer be full-time companions? How will Coleman’s character be “a shock”?

the thing with rory and amy will definitely be interesting…actually, everything is interesting!!!

Out of all the companions he decides to bring back Martha? Don’t get me wrong, I liked Martha, but she would of been at least 5th on my list of who I would like to bring back.

Well Rose is unreachable with another doctor, Donna cant remember him, Sarah sadly is gone and they would never recast her, Jack and Martha really only choices. It should be interesting as Martha has not met new Doctor.

Honestly, my issue with Martha is that she was so infatuated with the Doctor that she was unable to let her intelligence shine through. I really enjoyed her part in “Doctor’s Daughter” because she had little interaction with him and was able to show off her brilliant mind. If Martha can be shown to be independent in this episode, I’d be overjoyed to see her return!

      • Jael

Actually, Martha is smart enough to not be so infatuated it turns into obsession.  The main reason why she leaves him is because she didn’t want that infatuation to take her over, citing what happened to a roommate of hers who was in an unrequited relationship.

        • nargleinthetardis

Oh, I absolutely agree! I’m just saying that it annoyed me how much time the writers spent on her unrequited love for the Doctor. She is a much stronger character for leaving, and when we’ve seen her in subsequent episodes she’s been independent and deserving of the title “companion”. During Series 3, however, she was shown in the worst possible light by the writers–the usurper, Saint Rose’s replacement. The Doctor treated her horribly and she seemed constantly jealous. I’m hoping that Moffat will continue her development as a strong character with a close but non-romantic relationship with the Doctor, the way Martha deserves.

I was never a Martha fan but it would be cool to see her return.

  • Lorena

I love Martha. She was my favorite Ten companion. Martha, Donna, Astrid, and then Rose. Not a Rose fan, really.

Moffat, please bring her back! And, when are we ever going to see the Doctor’s Daughter again?

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE JENNY AGAIN! And Martha… and Rose… and Donna… AND AMY! I WANT THEM ALL!

  • Alex

wait so he’s Not killing off amy/rory? YAY!!! :D

oh fuck yes I would LOVE to see Martha!! In all honesty I think it would be stupid not to include her since she is UNITs go to person for the doctor..

  • Katelyn

Martha never really, truly came into her own until she left the Doctor.  She had her moments here and there…but like others haves said, those happened when she wasn’t around the Doctor, they happened when she was doing something on her own.  But bringing Martha back every so often gives her character and opportunity to show off her badassery in ways that really didn’t happen when she was the full time companion.

I think that Amy and Rory not being regulars might be a positive, as far as leaving them goes. It may be an easier separation if we start to be distanced from them.

  • Phantomfluteplayer

It would definitely be awesome to have Martha back. It would definitely be interesting to see a definite 10th Doctor companion interacting with 11. Also, do you think that we would get a glimpse of Mickey? He is after all married to Martha.

  • Marly

I’m kind of disappointed with this. It sounds like Amy and Rory will turn into the people that the doctor just visits occasionally, and that wouldn’t be new or interesting. Even though I don’t particularly want them to die, at least that would ensure lots of emotion and a chance for great acting in the new season.

I would LOVE for Martha to come back in a few episodes. Her character was weak while she was a companion, but grew tremendously while in UNIT. She was amazing as a guest in Torchwood, especially. However if Martha does guest, please, please, PLEASE let Mickey NOT be in the show. I can’t stand him -_-

And c’mon Moffat, we need more info about the new companion. “It’s going to be shocking” tells us NOTHING! :(

  • NotPennysBoat

Yesplz. Bring Martha back without the her ‘luv’ for the Doctah [ridiculously detrimental character development & unnecessary] and a well written story for a change [yuck Sontarans].
also pretend that The Mickey-marriage bs is a lie. Thank you.
If Moffat brings her back, I will love him forever.

    p.s. Coleman = Romana? O.o yes? Please?

  • Oscar

If Martha returns… PLEASE BRING BACK MICKEY! It’d be so brilliant to see Mickey meet Eleven and (especially) Rory… I feel both Rory and Mickey were both forgotten companions.
