Encyclopedia Britannica has launched an app version of the encyclopedia available for the iPad and iPhone.
After 200 years of being in print Britannica sales declined due to the availability of free information on the internet and Britannica stopped the presses. In order to be competitive and relevant, the encyclopedia is now available through app for iPad and iPhone. The app and several features are free however for full access a monthly subscription applies.
Some features of the app, including the most popular entries, will be available for free but Britannica hopes that people will be willing to pay for full access in the face of competition from the likes of Wikipedia, emphasising “the increasing number of digital users who seek quality and reliability of information over availability”.
Would you pay for an app when the information is available for free?
