The Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec has spoken in new interviews about the future of some of our beloved characters, her season 4 vision and more. Beware of spoilers.
The Hollywood Reporter has a video interview up with Julie Plec where she talks season 4, teasing a “great romance,” a new villain and more:
In another interview with HitFix, Plec previews the very Elena-centric finale, saying:
As she’s really reflecting on this kind of dreadful and horrible emotional year that she’s had, we take her back to a time when life was just a lot simpler, when her parents were alive and she was a cheerleader dating the quarterback. Everything we’ve been doing all season with Elena’s journey has been leading up to this episode and leading up to this choice that she has to make between these two brothers.
Interestingly though, Plec emphasises that the choice Elena makes in the finale isn’t necessarily the endgame, and perhaps gives something important away about the direction of the show:
This show is a journey of a teenage girl finding her way back to life through the love of one vampire and discovering maybe other elements of life through the love of another vampire, growing up, graduating high school, moving on.

She also talks about bringing back dead characters and wrapping up their stories, and reveals:
We’ll get a little clue into Aunt Jenna’s whereabouts in the next couple episodes and then, of course, we’ll see Sarah Canning in the finale, just in a nice little flashback, back when everybody was normal and human. [But] I don’t think we’ll ever see Vicki again. We brought her back. She played her storyline and she said good-bye. She moved on. Matt said good-bye to her, so he closed that door. So I can’t definitively say “never,” but surely no plans to.
