Finally, after a 6 month delay, Pottermore has officially been opened to everyone!

The news comes via the Pottermore official Twitter account today:

But don’t get your hopes up just yet. Though Pottermore will be available to everyone, you will still need the invitation that the site will be sending out over the next several days:

Over the coming days, we’ll be inviting new users onto Pottermore.com. We’re expecting to be really busy to start with and plan to activate new registrations in a steady stream. This means that you may not get access to Pottermore immediately after you sign up but we will get you exploring the site as quickly possible.

Are you one of the folks who has been waiting with bated breath for an invitation!? Which house are you hoping to be sorted in to?

  • LauraJay

  • Plat

I was one of the first to notice when I went to the site. So happy for everyone else to join us!  :) And excited that they are getting all the new features out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000012329289 Aaron Young

Slytherin from back in beta!  We’re still leading in house points (as of now that is :P)

    • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

Beta was awesome, wasn’t it. Yes, the site had/has its issues, but we were able to help improve it slightly. LOVE IT! What is your PM name?

  • Mad

Beta was kinda awesome though….and we all became really close from it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

What is your PM name? Add me! I am GobletSword201

    • LGray1983

The beta sign-up process was very exciting for me. It was the first time I’d actively participated in the online fandom, so Pottermore will always be special to me in that way at least. Of course, the backstory is also amazing as well as the art. People were just expecting too much from it. And forgetting it’s only 1/7th completed.

  • Natalie

Can’t believe people still care about Pottermore tbh.

    • Plat

If youre a true Potter fan, you’ll stick through anything. The point is, why WOULDN’T people still care?

      • katie

If you’re a true Potter fan, you’ll recognize strengths and weaknesses in everything. A failed Sony product is a failed Sony product. It does not reduce a fan’s love of the story.

        • Person

        • Plat

Pottermore isn’t just a Sony product, it was J.K. Rowling’s idea, and Sony simply made it happen. Theres no one telling you to go onto Pottermore every day for every hour and constantly have things to do there. As an experience that you can have, and as a companion to the books, it’s very well put together. So there is no reason to be cynical and say “I cant believe people still care.”, and posting things like that is like a slap in the face to someone who has been waiting months, or even just people who have already been enjoying it. The fact is people DO care, if you don’t have something nice to say, then keep it to yourself. I don’t see a point in making a comment like that. It’s not going to help anyone. The only negative comments that are useful are “It was okay, but it needs this, or it needs that.” or “I enjoyed this aspect, but this part doesn’t need this.” etc. But posting “Why do people even care anymore?” is just plain out rude.

          • katie

Dude…it’s the Internet. Trust me, you’ll find much worse comments than that. She was simply expressing her discontent. Everyone’s up for an opinion. Let it be. I might think it’s rude for people to comment “OMGZ Everyone who doesn’t like Pottermore needs to either shut up or she’s not a Potter fan!” Come on! You know that’s not true.
JKR’s idea was an interactive website to provide extra content to the fans. Sony made it happen, sure–Sony made it happen with animation that takes too long to load and little activities that are only fun for the younger audience. Not to mention the original Harry Potter fans are now in their late teens-20s (and beyond) and don’t have the time that younger fans do to wait through pages loading and then search through those pages for content they want just as much as the younger fans.

      • Natalie

Lol are you serious? I LOVE Harry Potter. That doesn’t mean I can’t criticize things associated with it. Personally, Pottermore was a let-down. It barely added anything to my experience as a HP fan, so I stopped caring.

    • Broyds1993

Comments like this really really annoy me.  Pottermore has been in beta, it has just opened and is obviously not going to be perfect straight away, that is what the beta is all about: to find out what needs improving and getting feedback from the fans.  So what if the beta period was extended and the public launch delayed? The fact is the Pottermore team has done their utmost to improve the sight and listen to what we, the fans have to say, and you can tell that they have as they have now added sounds to the experience and have said themselves that they are adding new features to the site.  If you were a true Harry Potter fan (which you clearly are not) you would at least stick with Pottermore through the public launch to see if anything improves.  Even if the pottermore team weren’t to add new features, I would still be extremely happy with it as we are getting fantastic new information from JK Rowling, something all the FANS have been waiting for and what I don’t get is that so many potter “so called” fans are critisizing the site and not even giving it a chance.  We are lucky we have anything like pottermore anyway, Jo did not have to spend her time to do this, but she did and it’s about time more of us started to appreciate it a little more!

      • Natalie

Pottermore was boring. It barely gave us anything knew. I liked getting sorted, but that was about it. From what I can tell, they’ve spent the past few months fixing the website (So that it will actually WORK), but not adding anything to it. If there’s nothing new on the website, why should I still care? It’s going to be just as boring as it was the first time I logged on. Like, I gave it a chance. I was disappointed. What’s wrong with that? I can’t help how I feel about it lol.

        • Broyds1993

If you were a true fan you would love reading all the new information from Jo.  By the way the site is obviously going to be updated with new information when cos comes out.  But that depends whether your patient enough to wait that long.  (Oh yes you have already given up with it havent you? like a true HP fan).

    • Jaycee

If you don’t care about Pottermore, why are you reading an article about it?

      • katie

I believe Natalie meant “care” as in “want to participate in Pottermore”. She is reading an article because she’s still curious about the process–she just doesn’t find interest in the actual Pottermore website anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/marypao Mary

So anything new on the site before I attempt to even log on?

    • http://www.facebook.com/kevin.landeen Kevin Landeen

Nope, nothing new. Hopefully CoS opens ASAP! (It still has the little “BETA” feedback button . . . They didn’t really think this through.) Pottermore is AMAZING though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Scott-Alan-Sauberlich-Jr/510533062 Scott Alan Sauberlich Jr.

right away after I registered I was able to log in and I’m on the site right now

  • Ridhimad

    About freakin time!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J3A3KV2WFJ2SFUXTM52AQRRJ3Y Cynthia

I don’t understand that after all this time, they didn’t foresee that a lot of people want to access it and didn’t prepare for that.

I’ve waited and waited and I got excited to see you could register but NOW I still have to wait?

    Frankly, this is getting ridiculous

    • Emma

They’re trying to prevent a crash; it’ll only be a few days wait anyways!

  • Parth

i clicked on sigh up,entered my DOB and then country but when i click on continue,it   refreshes the page…i have tried it like 5 times already…anyone getting the same problem?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000867506723 Ifan Barber

they are also restricting areas due to huge demand :/

  • http://www.hypable.com/author/freya/ Anna Roberts

People were expecting too much from the beta test. Hopefully the feedback from it will have made Pottermore a satisfying experience for more of us :)

  • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

I’m in the midst of the sign up process right now. I have to say I’m completely put off by the fact that they have given me 5 user names to choose from, none of which I like. All of the user names are followed by a meaningless set of numbers, at least 4 digets, and there is the instruction “to pick a user name that is easy to remember”…ummm none of those with the random number sets are easy to remember.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

Here are the craptastic names I get to choose from. I would have wanted to try at least some variation of “pelirroja” which was the name that I used to go by when I was very active in the Potter fandom several years on The Werewolf Registry and The Sugar Quill. I wouldn’t even have cared it I would have to have thrown a number chain after it, but the names below are meaningless to me:

      • CliveRogan

Are any of those seriously harder to remember than pelirroja?  I assume you know what that even means but surely you had to put a bit of effort into remembering it.  I assume they’re doing this so that not everyone calls themselves Harry Potter.

        • Person

Pelirroja means redhead in Spanish. I assume all one would have to do to remember is look at one’s hair.

          • CliveRogan

Ah right, makes quite a bit of sense when I think about it. Shows my ignorance of Spanish, I just thought it was a random collection of letters. :S

          • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

yeah, no it ‘s been my online name for years and it’s very fitting for my physical appearance. The first thing people notice is my red hair

        • katie

Actually, it’s to protect child identities. Also…see “Person”‘s comment, hahahah. I’m a redhead. Pelirroja took no memory work when I first heard it in Spanish. Gingers be proud. :)

          • CliveRogan

Yeah, I suppose the child’s identities thing is a bigger issue, but it must have saved a lot of people a lot of time to not have to spend ages typing in combinations of Harry Potter related names and numbers before finally getting one not already in use.

      • jakem111

catgold is possibly the dumbest name I’ve ever heard! It’s SO FUNNY! I’d totally pick that one hahaha

        • Eilif

No I think I got the dumbest. UnicornAvis – Avis mean bird, therefore I am UnicornBird

    • GleeFan-attic

Unfortunately, it’s a necessary evil when dealing with potential users under the age of 13. California State Law is very strict about protecting the identity of minors…so, to get around the potential that someone would give away personal information in their self-chosen username (i.e. Tiffany12, or Cory2001), the site has to randomly assign the username. It’s the world we live in…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Wilkinson/792210064 Ryan Wilkinson

6 months of beta testing and the site is basically exactly the same… You do have to wonder what they’ve been doing for all this time.

    • GleeFan-attic

They explained in a press conference that they used this time to rewrite the back-end code of the site to accommodate the heavy processing power required for the number of users and the FLASH interaction. No one ever said they were changing the content…just the technology to launch the service worldwide.

  • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

Come on, Pottermore. Really? Like, seriously?

  • darklordisback

They haven’t sent me an email yet.

  • HarryHungerAvatar12

People just shut up! Pottermore has alot of other people who want to join not just you! You guys have to wait patiently before access to the site. I don’t want another mean uproar about Pottermore not opening to all but now it has your still doing the same thing. I signed up about 10 minutes ago when i found out. The more you wait the more excited the more better. So please be patience and just wait to step in the new Pottermore

  • FlamingC

Guys calm down its really not that great lol I’ve had it since last summer and I can tell you that unless you are under the age of seven, there’s really not much beside the little notes Rowling gives you.

    • http://twitter.com/ConnectxDots Emily

Way to be a Debbie Downer. People have been waiting for almost a year for this and you’re just going to blow off their excitement with “it’s not that great” probably because the initial charm has worn off for you. You may think you’re being helpful but you’re not.

      • Liderc

Trust us, it’s not good.  There’s a reason they’ve delayed it for so long.  You finish the content in like 20 minutes and you just click click click ect…

        • http://twitter.com/ConnectxDots Emily

I was in the beta. For the record, I loved Pottermore when I first joined. Sure, it’s not a website that I return to every day or week or even month, but I enjoy the website for what it is. I read along in Sorcerer’s Stone as I went so I didn’t finish the content in 20 minutes like you did. It actually took me a few days to get through everything. I guess the point I’m making is that not everyone’s experience is the same.
Just because you were disappointed in the website doesn’t mean that you should feel obligated to go around warning people who have been anxiously waiting for it for months that it’s going to disappoint them. It might not if they go in with an open mind. You’re softening the blow of a disappointment that might not even come.

          • katie

Everyone can’t take a neutral stance! Shall every commenter hide their opinions, positive or negative? Should someone who likes Pottermore refrain from positive reviews, so new people go in with open minds? Of course not. Keep the opinions coming, everyone!

          • http://twitter.com/ConnectxDots Emily

Let’s say you’re at a theme park and you’ve been waiting in line for six hours for a new attraction to open up. You’ve become a bit restless as you’ve waited and the ride has shut down a couple times but you stay in line because you’ve been waiting for this ride to open for months. You’re just about to get on the ride and the excitement has finally kicked back in when someone who is getting off runs over to you and says “Guys, don’t be too excited about it. It’s not that great. Really, unless you’re under the age of seven you’re probably going to find it boring.” How would you feel about that? I’m not saying that everyone should take a neutral stance about Pottermore. I’m saying don’t try to calm down the excitement of others by stating a negative opinion, especially when they’re about to get on the website and see for themselves!

          • katie

Alright, I can see your point of view. Certainly, though, I would have appreciated it if everyone hadn’t hyped it up so much before it opened. Expectations were far too high. I like varied opinions.

          • Guest

            C-A-T-S CATS CATS CATS!!!

        • GleeFan-attic

What? I logged on this morning…and two hours later, I’m still loving the experience and all the behind-the-scenes content…and I’m 34 years old. I’m only the “Potions Class” chapter, and still totally engaged. I don’t know how you got through ALL the content the site has to offer in 20 min. I’ve been clicking through this as fast as I can…and I’m on Chapter 8…of the first book…or 7 books. @Liderc:disqus, maybe there is more content then you’re aware of.

          • Liderc

I’ve been in Beta since day one, I’ve seen all the content, I assure you.  Maybe I’m a faster reader?

      • HJP<3

I also got mine last summer and I can assure you that the first few weeks you have it, it definitely IS exciting!  I still go on, but not as much, but it definitely is worth in anticipation.  The pictures are beautiful and the side notes are VERY interesting (especially the original 40, and Minerva’s back-story).  I think you guy’s like it (:

  • http://twitter.com/RachelgurlFL Rachel Gay

i still am looking forword to trying the site myself but when i try and move past step 2 it takes me back to step 1 i can’t sign up:(

    • Tehreem

      same here

  • TheGarBar13

It won’t let me register! After I put in my country it keeps resetting the page!!!!

    • Sinowayr

me too!!!!!! but no one else seems to having that problem besides us

      • wasabiness

Hey, me too I keep getting back in step 1 what the heck.

  • Jelly

    Pottermore was so last year.

Kidding, I’m glad that it’s finally open to everyone. For me personally nothing but the few extra tidbits from Jo (and perhaps the artwork) was worth the clicks, but I know a lot of people who are really excited about getting in. Hope newcomers enjoy the ride.

  • GleeFan-attic

I’ve been sucked in to the world of Harry Potter. If for nothing else, it’s worth my time to discover all the extra character details…like Minerva’s back story, and how the riff developed between the Potters and the Dursley family. LOVE IT!

  • Nevermore

I really wish people would stop saying how bad it is. I’ve been waiting for this ever since it was announced (actually the only reason I didn’t get early access is because I was away on vacation where we have no intenet), and just want to experience it for myself. I consider myself lucky to be a person who doesn’t really listen to comments like that without experiencing it on my own, but I have friends who are not as huge Potter fans as I am, and are now not bothering to sign up.

    • http://twitter.com/lameduckee J AZ Z-O —❧

Like you, I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have been waiting with baited breath for my invite.  I would love to experience the new world so to speak that JK Rowling has come up with.

  • writeworld

What’s going on with the new tidbits promised to users who have been waiting for six months? Does anyone know?

  • http://www.rebellionradiopodcast.com Hurley

Woah! I didn’t know you could embed Tweets! Haha that’s actually really cool…

  • Emmalou

my username is FlameCat23912 how cool is that? lol still waiting for my email tho…

  • Alex

Wow I wasn’t it expecting it for another week- Sweet!

and as a beta tester- i logged in and— it doesn’t even let me log in- and i put the right password and username!

but to those JUST joining in! HAVE FUN!

the site has A LOT of cool things- like doing your shopping, getting your wand and being sorted (which was well done in my opinion) and then interactive stuff like potions and spell casting.

the cherry on top is the extra content AND the Beautiful illustrations.

also you guys are lucky- you’re first impression of pottermore will have sound!

*now waits patiently for Chamber of Secrets to be released*

    • Plat

I agree! And now that its up and running to everyone, I hope the next release will be COS!

  • Kelly Barker

So after we’ve signed up, is it a matter of days or hours that we get the email?

    • Plat

Depends. It can be either one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/iDomi Domi Ed

I have been a beta user since the beginning but I have been waiting to see just how crazy the internet will be once this happens.

  • Joshua A

My friend signed up today, and she got in immediately

  • mooncat

Do all the “new” usernames have three or four numbers after the words? It would be interesting to be able to distinguish between the beta testers and everybody else.

  • writeworld

When I sign in to Pottermore, it still shows me as a beta tester. I can’t get to the ebooks or hear sound or anything… Is that normal?

  • Ein Pinguin

i am a beta and i have 3 numbers i think everyone with more than 3 is a new member

    • LilyLuna

Not necessarily. My friend just created an account with a name containing only 3 digits.

  • Allie Rose Mellark

    • katie

There’s something you need to know about Pottermore…

    • Plat

There are literally MILLIONS of people trying to get in, be patient and it will be here soon.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Diego-Hernandez/539018211 Diego Hernandez

make more accounts while you wait lol I am

  • michief managed

It’s insane!! I was a beta user and there were just over under 600,000 users. Now since the opening to everyone it’s gone up to over 14 million!! <3 Harry Potter!

    • Morgan May

      Actually, it’s only a little above 1 million accounts…not 14 million.

  • Mia

I was a beta user and decided I wanted to get a new account to relive it! Just as exciting as the second time for me. Although I did get placed in a different house this time around so I’m a little identity confused… but I got into the house I wanted this time around so I don’t know if they changed up the sorting or what. Can’t wait for CoS :)

  • amz

I’m enjoying the new content but I’m finding the website super slow. I have to load nearly every page about 5 times because either it comes up as black or it won’t let me click/zoom anywhere or move on.

  • Eilif

I have been waiting for 6 months to do this! However, the whole process of getting information frustrates me. I live in a country with extremely slow internet and it took me 3 hours to get to chapter 7. Really I just want the information, not all the extra stuff. For instance, there’s a section on “The Zoo”, why do we need this? I know what happens in the book. I feel like I’m playing one of those kids games like Poptropica, except not as fun.

    • katie

We all feel you, man. That’s definitely one of the most frustrating aspects of Pottermore….even though that’s not just an “aspect”, it’s Pottermore as a whole..hahah, oh well.

  • http://twitter.com/acjub CK

Wait..I just visited Pottermore again and there doesnt appear to be any changes. did they just open it without fixing any of the issues? And why on earth can we still not get to book 2?

    • katie

They mostly did background issues–getting things to run smoother, load better–not much that you’ll actually notice.

      • http://twitter.com/acjub CK

I was hoping for more stuff to do. The potions take for ever and I cant get more to make. There was a reason why I hadnt been logged in for months..

        • katie

Exactly the same here. No reason to log back in. I’ve already read the content…now we just have to wait for that legitimate encyclopedia in book form. Much easier.

  • jakem111

Can we have a contest to see who has the worst pottermore user name? Because some of them are RIDICULOUS!

    • http://twitter.com/acjub CK

      MirrorKey. It’s terrible!

      • Holly

I actually like mine, it’s phoenixgold
A tip: if you don’t like any of your six choices, just clear your history and put in your information again!

  • Isak

This anybody spot any differences from the beta besides sounds?

  • HarryHungerAvatar12

Well it’s funny, my wand “Beech” means wisdom and i’m in Gryffindor and my sister wand “Larch” means courage and she’s a ravenclaw I just don’t get it.

Anyway I had three account and now my fourth on my first account I had Slytherin then my second I had Hufflepuff and my third is Gryffindor and I wanted to be in Ravenclaw! I’m probably going to get Ravenclaw next. I’m the Avatar!!! :)

    • christinachristina

ah, i love it when some people are their 3rd or 4th account, while i’m STILL waiting to get in. thanks guys.

      • Allie Rose Mellark

If you tried to sing in on Saturday and havent gotten an email yet just make a new account…Thats what i had to do in order to get an email

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

Add me anyone. FrogGlow6924 Slytherin( i was shocked being picked a Slytherin…But it’s all good)

  • http://twitter.com/peachface44 Crystal

While they are some really spectacular things about this site, there is also simply too much waiting around. Users should be able to do multiple things at once, such as chat with each other (pm), brew multiple potions, etc. I also believe items found throughout the chapters should come in handy for more than gift gifting. They should be useful!

Anyway, I’m enjoying it although I get bored with it at times.

    • katie

no private messaging….child safety issues. :(

  • wasabiness

WHAZAPPNIN?! I keep getting back to step 1 of registration, I tried hundred times and nothing’s really changed. I hate Pottermore now! hmp!

    • June Carmen

“WHAZAPPIN’?!” You’ve have literally made my DAY!!! I Have missed that word SOO MUCH!!! Thank you SOO MUCH!!!
