For Oprah.com, The Hunger Games and X-Men star Jennifer Lawrence has revealed her five favorite books!

Her top two and why:

1. “The Other Boleyn Girl”

“Gregory is one of my favorite authors,” says Lawrence. “I’ve always loved history, and she makes it…salacious.”

Narrated by Anne Boleyn’s sister Mary — who managed to keep her head — Gregory’s best-seller takes a new look at the oft-told story of the loves of Henry VIII and the political and religious intrigues and rivalries that roiled not just life in the English court but the whole of Europe.

2. “Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters”
When she was 14, Lawrence traveled to New York City to start her career, so Salinger’s tales of the quintessential New York family — the brilliant, sophisticated, doomed Glasses — have a special place in her heart.

“I’m so drawn to Salinger’s view of society back then, and to his sarcasm. I read “Catcher in the Rye” first, then this one. I don’t think there’s ever been anything like these characters in American literature.”

Rounding out the top five are We Need to Talk About Kevin, Anna Karenina, and The Rum Diary.

    No Potter? :(

    • Daughter of Eve

maybe not because of the franchise comparisons that are constantly made. She said in an interview that she is a huge fan of the books, but is prolly sticking to non fandom books (and possibly even getting other young readers to pick up other books)

    No Hunger Games?

    • Hermione Granger

Well I understand that she might not mention those, because it’s sort of a given. Whenever they were asked about their favorite books, none of the HP actors said Potter (other than Evanna of course). It might look like she was trying to gain more publicity or something. Or she just enjoyed THG but they’re not necessarily her favorite.

Well, she and I certainly do not have the same taste. “The Other Boleyn Girl” was an atrocious mockery of history. Ugh.

Well, it’s not a non-fiction is it.  It’s a novel.  so the author took some liberties.   I didn’t really care if it was historically accurate or not.  I just took it for what it was. A historical fiction based on, but not necessarily following real events.

“The Other Boleyn Girl” is a great book!

  • katie

She’s not required to hop on pop culture bandwagons—good for her for leaving out the big-name series! She has an excellent top list: a unique mix of good reads. This makes me like her more.

  • DreamNox58

Is it sad that I’ve never heard of any of these except for The Rum Diary?  hmmmm.  Oh well.  I prefer more mystery, horror, that kind of thing.  and fantasy of course.

  • Luna97831

I was half expecting HG, Catching Fire, Mockingjay.
And I would have yawned. But I like the choices she has!

I’m a little disappointed The Other Boleyn Girl is her favorite. It’s a little…trashy I think :/ At least, that’s what I thought when I read it. It’s not bad, but it’s really not great either.

I’m impressed with these being her top five; I remember seeing an image of her reading War and Peace on set.  I’ve read most of these and enjoyed them immensely.  My only real issue was the historical inaccuracy of the Other Boleyn Girl.

Sort of sounds like she was trying for a publicity stunt and just chose five random books.
