Glee returns for the final couple of episodes of its dramatic and sometimes controversial third season. With seniors graduating this year, and word of a “revolutionary” season 4, it has left us all wondering: what the heck is going to happen to this show?!

Ryan Murphy has said that some of the core cast will be returning for season 4. Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer have all said that they will be returning in a “revolutionary” fashion. The word “revolutionary” being the term Fox’s PR seems to be coaching them to say.

So here we are, eight episodes from the end of season 3, and we still have no clue at all as to how these characters are going to be incorporated into a show about high school show choir if they graduated!

On Glee Chat, Hypable’s Glee podcast, I’ve often said that maybe they’ll do a Lost-style “flash sideways” line next year with two “what if” plot lines going on at the same time. What if Quinn didn’t send that text? What if Rachel does/doesn’t go to New York? What if Kurt had answered those texts from Karofsky? This isn’t me digging for examples; they’re very clear and visible devices that seem to be setting up the audience to ask itself “what if?” Each character seems to have come to or is going to be coming to a fork in the road with their lives. Maybe season 4 will be about what could have happened? That seems like a lot to ask from a comedy, but we’ve seen Glee handle much more intense story lines than this.

Another theory I came up with is that maybe they will do live shows in canon with the storyline. As we’ve reported there is no summer tour this year – but that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a fall tour! How fun would it be to have tickets to go see one of the live season 4 episodes of Glee at your local arena; to live and be present in an episode. I could totally see live and studio versions of songs appearing in iTunes the next day (American Idol, anyone?) This too seems far-fetched, but that’s where we have to go if we want to figure out what’s so “revolutionary” about the next season.

Recently a Fox executive said that the next season of Glee is going to be “exciting” and that it is “going to feel like ‘Glee.’” This is interesting to me because it makes it sound as if they are going to be uprooting the entire feel/plot of the show and recreating it. If it were the traditional format that we’ve already seen in the three seasons we’ve had so far, what would be the point in emphasizing that it’s going to feel the same way next season?

Either way, we’ll be finding out what’s going on with season 4 sometime soon. We’re probably a few weeks away from hearing an official confirmation about the renewal, but something tells me we won’t know about what’s so revolutionary about season 4 until the season 3 finale at the very earliest – and maybe not even then.

Do you have any ideas, suspicions, or hopes about what season 4 will entail? What would and wouldn’t you be okay with seeing in season 4? Sound off in the comments below and we may read them on a future episode of Glee Chat!

Very good ideas. If either of yours got picked, I’d be happy

  • CliveRogan

I think ‘Revolutionary’ is just another word, along the lines of ‘back to basics’ that sounds good, but is ultimately meaningless, just something else to keep people watching.  Season 3 is no different to 2, and I doubt 4 will be very different either.

My money’s on time travel lol

I really like the “flash-sideways” theory. I think it would be really interesting to see Glee’s take on the “what-if” side of things.  Although, I wouldn’t call it revolutionary since Lost kind of already went down that route.

Most probably Quinn will pass away ,with the others all graduate.Brittany probably will remain for another season  while maybe  one of them return to Mckinley to
teach(most probably Santana) ,Finn most likely will be working for his Step-dad  while Kurt and Rachel headed to NY.
Its better to start with almost new cast with the exception of  the teachers as Ryan Murphy seems  not to have a clear storyline for many characters which are present now .The only well written charactesr are Kurt,Santana,Mike and Emma while others are just there doing something related to these characters.Even Rachel storyline also gotten a bit boring. In season 1 we saw her as this determined girl want to achive big in broadway while as the season progresses she  turns to this girl whose decison revolves her bf.Dont let me start about Sam Evans and Puck.whenever  onscreen, Sam is shirtless and his work is to romance the girls.same thing goes for Puck. But I did enjoy Rachel/Mercedes competing for roles.

A fresh new cast would be better with some of them occasionally makes a guest appearance.

I doubt Quinn is passing away….when Fox released the first promo for the new episode, they left a MAJOR clue to the big cliffhanger, then after realizing they screwed up royally, they went back and removed said video. Then they re-uploaded it, this time omitting the huge mistake they left before.

i stop watching after season 1 the show just lost it touch for me

  • Sara Patterson

I’m not expecting anything really “revolutionary.” I think that’s just a word Fox is using to make it sound more exciting. The only thing I can think of happening is having side by side plots, like going back and forth between Rachel/Kurt in New York, Finn wherever he is, Santana wherever she is, and the kids still at McKinley. But that’s not revolutionary in the least.

Maybe the 4th season will be the summer before they all leave? That could be interesting.

I think it is hard for me to fall in love with glee with brand new members in season 4.

If season 4 really can recruit some people who are attracted to me, I would rather prefer let glee becomes my childhood memory.

  • Jen

I wouldn’t expect anything too clever or original from the Glee writers. They’ll probably just relocate to New York.

  • xoxoKellyLee

With using a term like “revolutionary” and saying things like it is “something we’ve never seen before on TV” (which was what I read Ryan Murphy had said earlier in the season), it means that any sort of plot device we’ve already seen is out of the picture: they can’t move forward 4 years like One Tree Hill (and I think Desperate Housewives did the same thing); flash-sideways, -back, -forward like Lost; have everyone defer college like The OC; have everyone go to college in the same town like Gossip Girl…so what do they have left?

I love Glee and I am really glad that core characters are coming back like Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, and Chris Colfer, but what about the rest of them?  Personally, I’m hoping they keep Glee Project winners Damian McGinty and Samuel Larsen on as regulars for next season and build a new story line around them and the remaining New Directions.  New characters, new plot lines with the new season!

I just think they’ll follow everyone doing their lives, even though Rachel might be in NY, Finn in Lima, Blaine still in McKinley, Santana ..

  • Somebody

Is one of them just going to stay on as a counselor or extra voice coach for the club or something? I feel like that’s the most likely scenario, since it will be difficult to keep so many seperate plotlines going together and still have them mesh to create a coherent plot. Although I do feel like it could be done really well. They could juxtapose the kids in glee club dreaming about their futures and how they’re all going to be stars, etc. with Rachel’s, Mike’s, Finn’s actual lives now to show how difficult and unrealistic those dreams really turn out to be. But that’s hardly a glee-ful concept, sooooo…..

  • Bwickeder

Ryan Murphy is going to pull an American Horror Story and Glee season 4 is going to be about an entirely new glee club in a different state. The cast will remain the same, but they’ll all be playing new characters. That way the show can keep them around as long as the show is successful. Characters getting too old? No problem, lets start another clean slate.
    How “revolutionary” Ryan! Ugh…

    • Greg

Why are you getting exasperated about an idea that came out of your own head? You and I both know that story would never, ever happen.

  • N_HarryPotter7

The really big thing I want for season 4 is to have Lindsay back!  She was amazing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/yinyangmama Becky Fathers Cook

I had the horrible thought that it was all a dream and that Quinn has been in a coma after her accident imagining this whole Glee-verse.  Of course, this too has been an already used plot device, so thankfully we’ll probably be spared this twist.

Glee is improving… Season 2 was awful and the number of “mid-season” breaks have made me lot interest in Season 3, despite it being better. Season 1 is by far the best season and they need to have an episode-a-week in order to keep my attention – they need the comedy back and some of the smaller musical numbers.

    • Hehedied

      Wow I agree 100%

  • Sarah

I doubt they’d do anything as complex as a flash-sideways. My theory: Rachel and Kurt go to school in New York. Blaine follows him there (because apparently it’s really easy and rational for high schoolers to switch schools for the sake of their significant others), maybe for some kind of FAME-style performing arts school…. Where Schuester has also been offered a job–possibly after his big broadway debut with April Rhodes that he eventually decides to accept. Artie will be given some kind of directing gig for the show. Somehow some of the other glee kids will also find their way to NYC. The end.

    • Greg

That is the opposite of revolutionary.

  • Rebecca Richardson

Question….. why is Mercedes in a cap and gown? I thought she was graduating next year?

    • Alyssa

But if Mercedes wasn’t in a cap and gown, it might look too much like the Glee writers were interested in continuity and logic! We couldn’t have that!

  • Hehedied

Glee has turned into a celebrity advertisement show.

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

I, too, have a question: is this show worth watching again?
Please don’t answer that if you’ve loved it all so far…I personally haven’t, so I guess what I mean is, anyone who found the second half of Season 1 and onward a rather daunting task to watch, but has seen it recently…is it worth it again? Because I think the writers made Season 2 a bit too ‘We’re covering THIS artist this week’, and there were too many characters being introduced and focused on in any one episode, and I lost track after five episodes or so of that Season. I’d really like to get back into it, but only if it’s at the first half of Season 1-type glory…and the captions in the image for this article suggest that might be the case.
(I hope this doesn’t sound offensive to fans, it’s just personal taste…I do love the cast and people involved, but I can’t take some aspects of the show past those first wonderful few episodes seriously).

  • Noneofurbeeswax

glee is getting kind of boring… still watching it though hope the 4th season will be more interesting

  • Anon8

I loved reading your theories! I have to be honest though, they seem a little too far-fetched to actually happen, but I do enjoy them. I love reading a bunch of theories. The only one I’ve really thought of is if all the kids win nationals and then get a scholarship to a fancy arts school in NYC with kind of like a “state choir” but different…this makes no sense. Basically, if the seniors went to college in NY, the high school kids ended up going to school in NY, and then they were all still in the same glee club because it wasn’t affiliated with a school.

  • Me Sider

those are great theories but i think that they will incorporate the future of those graduating into the show. i think that Finn will come back to co-un the glee club of coach football. and Rachel will be in the background of his storyline just like Terry was with Will. but the others im not quite sure so im excitied to find out

  • Melody

Revolutionary, like turning a fanfic into a TV show? xD If they made CP Coulter’s Dalton happen on TV, I would totally love Glee again (hey, I can dream, can’t I?) xD

  • Monica

Naya Rivera will be also on the season 4, she said it on her twitter so long time ago when she sign her contract for another season more

  • http://twitter.com/gryall97 Georgia Ryall

I don’t care about Cory or Lea or Chris, all i know is that Naya will be returning and i hope Heather will be too!

  • Prettyfairy1996

lea and chris. all i care about.

  • Fruitee

Their is small possibility that Heather will be back in season 4. I hope she will, because she is one of my favorite character on glee a side from Naya. I will also missed Brittana.
