Despite Sony denying a new PlayStation will be unveiled anytime soon, rumors are swirling that the next console may not support PlayStation 3 or used games and that it could see release as soon as 2013.

Kotaku claims to have received inside information from a source that says the working name of Sony’s next gaming console is the Orbis and that it will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 3 titles or play used games.

Microsoft’s next-generation console, codenamed Durango, is also rumored to eliminate used game support.

Blu-ray discs and digital downloads will be tied to a single PlayStation Network account.

The source claims developers are being told to plan for the use of an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, which would be capable of producing images at a 4096×2160 resolution, in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets, as well as full 1080p for 3D games.

“Select developers” are reportedly already receiving dev kits for the Orbis, according to Kotaku’s source. This would give Sony’s top teams enough time to work on titles for the proposed 2013 launch.

If any of this turns out to be true, how do you think Sony’s next console is shaping up?

    I don’t even have a PS3 yet…
I hope Orbits will be compatible with the PS3 games and if it isn’t it better have a have.adamn good reason its not.

    That’s the problem with gaming.
I love new shiny stuff. BUT I hate knowing after I buy it, in 2-3 years something “better and bigger” is going to come out.
And it will be round about the same price I paid for the other thing I bought.

    Its an annoying cycle.

As the article says, no it won’t be compatible with PS3 games.  And it’s not compatible because it means you have to go out and buy new games for it, meaning more money for them.

It’s the main reason why I only play PC games, I buy a game once and I can play it forever, while also not having to play new games with the graphics limited like they are on the current consoles.

But its still a rumour. So if I try to think of it like maybe that one part is incorrect then maybe I can save money.

” BUT I hate knowing after I buy it, in 2-3 years something “better and bigger” is going to come out.”

Um… game generations usually last 6 years. Just sayin.

I highly doubt this is true. I can see this becoming true for later models, but not the launch version. If they launched this system with the terms the article states, launch sales will be really poor since developers will still be releasing their games on PS3 as well as the new system. People remember the hype from the launch, not the sales numbers from a few months in (Ex: 3DS launch sales were piss poor, then became decent but no one cared) so it would really be a dumb move in my opinion.

The 3DS sales are more than decent. 16 million worldwide. Much more than the original DS’s first year. Fastest selling game system ever in japan. Doing really well elsewhere too. (sorry, I just had to get defensive, lol)

I agree! It sold half a mil, in USA it’s first week haha. Now vita… That’s not doing so well.

      • TheHamburglar

My bad, I mixed it up with Vita. I havent touched a handheld device since the gameboy advance so I don’t have that much of an interest lol

    • Hehedied

3Ds had an amazing launch what are you talking about?

      • TheHamburglar

I mixed it up with Vita, throw me a bone.

didn’t ps2 ps3 and 360 all say the same thing? lol

I really hope they leave the backwards compatibility and used game usage… More specifically used games… I know companies don’t make money from used game resales, but what about friends who borrow each other’s games? That really boils my blood that they’d take steps to end that…

  • http://twitter.com/MaybeDavey David Weckesser

If they don’t have backwards compatibility that would be moronic! I wanna get a PS3 still but if they don’t have b.c. then they’ll probably stop making ps3 games even faster! :’(
