It’s been a long wait for fans – but we now finally know who will be taking over from Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as the Doctor’s new companion. Meet Jenna-Louise Coleman! This post contains spoilers.
The reveal came early this morning, at a press conference organised by the BBC. The change in companion has been one of the worst kept secrets in recent television history, since we heard back in December that Gillan and Darvill would be leaving.
At the conference, where Steven Moffat officially announced the news, Jenna said that she “wants to get started already.” When asked who her favourite former companion was, she told reporters she was torn “between Billie Piper and Karen Gillan.” Talking about her casting, Steven Moffat said “It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him in his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
Confirmation also came for scheduling of the seventh series. Six episodes will air this year, including the Christmas special (which will also serve as the new companion’s first episode), with another batch of eight adventures to come in 2013 – one of which will see the return of the Daleks.
Louise-Coleman had a small role in Captain America: The First Avenger, but is most notable in the UK for her roles in Emmerdale and Waterloo Road. She is also set to star in the British mini-series Titanic, written by Downton Abbey creator Jullian Fellowes later this month. Jenna-Louise Coleman will be the sixth official companion of The Doctor since the series relaunched in 2005.
Louise-Coleman will take over from current companions Amy and Rory Pond, who have been travelling with The Doctor since Series Five (2010) and are expected to leave mid-way through the upcoming series in the fifth episode of its autumn run. The episode will see a chilling “final encounter” with the Weeping Angels, and Moffat promised “Not everyone will get out alive, and I mean it this time.” It will be the first time that we’ve seen The Eleventh Doctor have to deal with the loss of a companion.
