A senior producer at Blizzard admitted that porting WoW to the iPhone would be a challenge. However, they added that it would be “foolish” for any company to ignore it as a gaming platform.
In conversation with Eurogamer, John Lagrave discussed the MMORPG’s suitability to the iPhone platform:
Maybe we’ll stumble on the great way to put WoW on the phone – maybe we won’t, but we’re certainly looking into it.
We won’t do it until we think it’s decent. But it’s interesting and the world is evolving towards that little handheld device – I’d have fun on it, that’s absolutely the case. It would be foolish for any game developer to not be looking at that and we’re not – we don’t think – we’re foolish!
Lagrave reiterated that the development team had made no breakthrough yet:
When we have an epiphany, everyone will know. But for now, no epiphany! […] Right now we’re focused on PC – that’s our bread-and-butter, PC and Mac.
If Blizzard were able to find a way to tap into this lucrative market without losing the heart of their game, it would truly be an impressive feat.
What do you think – will it ever be possible for MMORPGs to be played on mobile devices, or should developers continue to concentrate on conventional platforms?
