Although all eyes are on the release of The Hunger Games in a couple of weeks, Lionsgate is hard at work planning the filming of Catching Fire.

Today we’re learning when they’ll begin to prep the land and then begin shooting!

North Carolina news reporter Russ Bowen tweeted confirmed information today:

Star Jennifer Lawrence recently revealed she was to begin training for Catching Fire in the summertime. We had learned several weeks ago that filming for the sequel was set to begin in September.

I don’t get why they are waiting so late. I’m just bummed that Catching Fire won’t be released for another year and a half. Which pushes Mockingjay to 2014-2015 :(

im hoping that maybe they move the date up?  hunger games is being released only 8 months after filming began (roughly, I think they began filming in July).  why would they need 14 months for catching fire?!  i doubt the shoot will be 6 months longer, and I dont think that the sequel will have that many more visual effects than its predecessor will have.   i dont mind waiting if it means a movie with excellent quality.

Did not realize how close they are to me when they are filming until I read this. :O

Am I the only one who doesn’t enjoy the fact they are letting Gary Ross direct another one without seeing how well received the hunger games is? I believe this is a mistake.

You’re probably not the only one, but I do think that they won’t find a man as passionate about the actual story and characters. The mistakes of bringing on a new director are made in a lot of movie series’, and this generally has to do with the fact that a new director could be in it solely for the money. They’ll say they love the source material, but they won’t back it up, especially not in terms of movie quality. And also, directorial switcheroos can mess with the essence created in the first or second outings. Even if THG doesn’t turn out to be Oscar worthy like we all hope it will be, changing director is bad news for everyone. The second they announced Gary Ross would direct THG, I started wishing he’d return for both sequels. Nothing else is acceptable, in my eyes.

Well said. Having seen videos of Ross talking about the books, I really trust that he’ll respect the story, if nothing else.

Really surprised they aren’t waiting for this one to be released.  Everyone thinks they have another Potter/Twilight here but so far I just haven’t seen it.

Hunger Games was kind of rushed in making. I’m glad they’re taking their time with this. Remember most sequels usually come out 2 to 3 years after the original.

At first I thought it was a terrible idea to wait until Decemeber 2013 to release a sequel (this coming from someone who saw how awesome it would be to have Catching Fire AND The Hobbit: Part 2 released on the month of her birthday) , and I still wish we could have it sooner, but look at it like this:
1). We get the same director for the sequel. This means no sudden change in the mood of the sequel, it will all have that same vibe, the same essence. No directorial switcharoo for this trilogy.
2). The cast and crew have more time to work on making it great. The more time, the more they can perfect.
3). If they’re finished filming early or mid-2013, they could possibly have started work on Mockingjay* before Catching Fire is even released.

*The only thing I hope they don’t do is split Mockingjay in two. I hope they go back on that decision, because it’s not necessary. Just make a longer-than-average movie outing, but please, no Part 1 and 2 or anything.

I’m curious as to where they are going to film the third quarter quell. I don’t think there are a whole lot of sandy beaches in NC with row upon row of palm trees.
I think it is awesome that they are already talking about making Catching Fire, Hunger Games is already predicted to be bigger than Twilight, I don’t think they are being premature about, Preticket sales alone the movie is doing amazing.

Have you been to NC? Plenty of worthy beaches here
