Today we get to hear another song from The Hunger Games soundtrack (we’ve heard several so far): Arcade Fire’s Abraham’s Daughter!

Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first listen (below) and spoke to group leader Win Butler about “his inspiration for the song, which will play over the movie’s closing credits”:

“I tried to put myself in the headspace of how excited I’d be if this film was coming out when I was 15. I still remember hearing Radiohead’s ‘Exit Music (for a Film)’ in [Baz Luhrmann’s] Romeo + Juliet when I was that age.”

“Our whole approach was to get into the world and try to create something that serves the story and the film,” he continued. ”There’s something in the story of Abraham and Isaac that I think resonates with the themes in the film, like sacrificing children. So we made a weird, apocryphal, alternate-universe version of that, where it’s as if Abraham had a daughter — kind of a metaphor for Katniss.”

What do you think of the tune? Also listen to Taylor Swift’s Safe & Sound, The Secret Sister’s Tomorrow Will Be Kinder, and The Decemberists’ One Engine.

LOL. i wonder if that would actually work in the hp books. dont we all wish :)

As far as we know, Time Turners can’t take you into the future!

      • Specialagentlilia

But there’s no reason to assume they couldn’t…I mean, what kind of time machine/apparatus doesn’t go in the future? Sounds kind of silly to me :)

        • Fiddy

I always assumed Time “Turner” followed the phrase of “turning back time”, not turning forwards.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joey-Mangum/1820064015 Joey Mangum

I assumed it just referred to “turning time” in general… You can turn it backwards, so wouldn’t you be able to do the opposite of that as well?

        • Johanna

well, since hermione’s always going on about how important it is not to be seen, and all the implications of that, maybe wizards understnad enough about consequences not to want to go into the future? i dunno… no idea what this has to do with the hunger games, but oh well!

          • Fiona

Somebody make sure to ask Jo this in her The New Novel book tours!

        • Hermione Granger

Well I think that since a huge thing with Time Turners was to not alter anything, I feel like the future would be kind of off-limits because by going into the future they’re automatically changing the present–or at least tying it down to one possible future. That probably didn’t make sense haha…

        • Hermione Granger

Oh and from Harry Potter wiki:

Part of the inscription on Hermione’s Time turner – “nor have I yet outrun the Sun” – seems to suggest that Time Turners can only travel backwards in time.”

Will any of these songs be in the ACTUAL movie, or is this just a COMPANION soundtrack?

    • Zack

By this I mean over the film part, NOT credits.

      • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

        Sorry, missed your second comment.

    • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

I would assume a companion soundtrack, but a couple of songs may feautre during the credits, or even opening credits. Maybe they’d use one for a montage sequence in District 12 or  The Capitol, but I think the big action scenes et al will be accompanied by the score.

    • http://www.rebellionradiopodcast.com Hurley

Nope, it was confirmed a while ago that this was a companion album, thankfully.

I like the idea of it, but what gets me is that you can barely understand the lyrics. Maybe I’m just getting hard of hearing haha

  • Janeth

It sounds futuristic and overall seems to fit the story. Kind of sounds like something you’d hear when Katniss’s father dies or after she gets the bread

  • Hermione Granger

This is pretty cool! It almost reminds me of a Halloween song (just the tone haha) or actually kind of like a pirate’s chant. Like something they might’ve played in Pirates of the Caribbean. I love that each song is very different so far in tempo, message, instrumentation, etc.

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

I’ve always though Ana Johnsson’s ‘Playing God’ would be a wonderful song for THG. Especially the lyrics in verse two, where she sings “Cry all the tears they’ve cried/Dream all the dreams that died/How do you face is father?/How do you breath?” It’s always been, to me, something of an anti love-letter from Katniss to President Snow.

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

    This is beautiful, as well.

  • Matt P

Nice song, I love Arcade Fire.

I can see it now! Katniss and Peeta stepping off of the train back in District 12, cut to black, and then this song plays. I think it fits the tone very well!

The file on both this site and on the original site are down!!! D: i want to hear it!!

The file is missing or removed or something.
So instead of crying into my phone, I went to Tumblr and found the song under Arcade Fire.

i love it! — but i have a question and it would be great if someone answered. Are they using these songs in the actual movie? like in twilight, the film had a score but it used “songs with words” in the movie also. Whereas compare that with Harry Potter (p.s. i hate comparing the three movies– but it works for my question) HP uses only a score in the movies. When i read the hunger games before, i never imagined the movies having songs by popular bands playing when she is in the arena, or something like that. It just wouldn’t make sense.
For twilight, it is understandable because the movies are set in 21st century America. it is supposed to give off this contemporary teenage feeling because it matches the angst in the book.
However, Hunger Games is a futuristic dystopian setting– where it’s probable they didnt have bands that played pop music (except maybe in the Capitol, but we dont know that) It would seriously take me out of the emotion of the movie if this song was played during a scene. It may just be me though.
Anyway, my overall question is whether these songs will be played in the actual movie or not? Is this soundtrack just for the enjoyment of fans because the songs relate to the movie (while not being in it).. or maybe because they are played in the credits (once again, not in the actual movie)?
sorry for the long post, but i am not getting a straight answer from my google search. Thanks

    • Kelly

wow, i feel stupid. if i just looked down a little further in the comments, i would have found my answer. anyway, so excited! it’s going to be epic!

Just so you know, the player is displaying “file not found” for me. I listened to the song on Youtube, and I thought it was pretty cool! I can definitely see the last scene of the movie blacking out to it – it’s very dramatic.

    Does anybody have the lyrics?

  • Alonninos

Here are the lyrics (as I hear them, anyway):

Abraham took Isaac’s hand and led him to the lonesome hill
While his daughter hid and watched.
She dared not breathe; she was so still.
Just as an angel cried for the slaughter,
    Abraham’s daughter raised her voice.
Then the angel asked her what her name was,
    she said,
    “I have none.”
Then he asked, “How can this be?”
“My father never gave me one.”
And when he saw her, raised for the slaughter,
    Abraham’s daughter raised her bow.
How darest you, child, defy your father?
You better let young Isaac go.
