Today Pottermore announced a deal with eBook distributor OverDrive to get the Harry Potter eBooks into public schools and libraries for digital lending!

The press release notes the significance of the announcement:

Under the terms of the agreement, OverDrive, a leading global distributor of eBooks and digital audiobooks, will manage hosting and digital fulfillment for libraries for the Harry Potter collection of eBooks and digital audiobooks in English and more than 20 other languages to OverDrive’s growing network of over 18,000 public and school libraries worldwide.

Through local public library and school catalogues, OverDrive’s digital book lending service will promote to new and returning readers a popular way to access the official Harry Potter eBooks and digital audiobooks. The Harry Potter series has sold over 400 million copies worldwide and is widely credited with immersing an entire generation of young readers into books and reading. With this agreement, the seven books in the series will be available in digital formats for the first time for lending from public and school libraries.

As of this time there does not appear to be a start date for this deal but we are actively looking into it.

There’s also no mention of when the eBooks will be available on Pottermore’s website. They were originally scheduled to launch last year.

I know my daughter is waiting anxiously for ebooks to be available…much easier to carry them on her Nook, rather than toting her library around.

    • Emily Brett

My library actually lets you borrow a nook, which is pretty amazing. Lookin forward to reading HP on that. :)

      • PotionWillow207

All Nooks do that…IF the books is classified as “Lend”-able. Not all books in the Nook library are. It has to have a “Lend Me” symbol on it.

I think she means the actual library has Nooks itself that people can check out to borrow.

I’m glad someone checks on Pottermore once in a while:) Still waiting for the beta to be over…..still waiting.

There’s only 50 UK libraries that use the overdrive system so I guess they don’t care about the country that Harry is even from. I will happily pay for the ebooks, why not team up with KOBO or Waterstones?

  • Space_child

Grrr I just want to own them and with the UK closing more and more libraries down and scaling back their budget how is this feasible?

  • Samuel

If they want to encourage more people to start reading Harry Potter, which it seems they do, then eBooks are a great way to do that, but I can’t help but think that it’d be better for the general consumer and both bookstores and librarys if they continued to promote actual copies of the books.

    • Jeff D.

Well, it’s not like they’re getting rid of the physical books. The books have been out for years now, so publishers don’t normally promote older books that have been out for a while unless they’re re-releasing them.

  • phoenixjay

So wait, does that mean they’ll only be available through libraries first? As in we’ll have to wait to buy them for ourselves even longer?

  • Mel823

This is good news for libraries, and they needed it.

  • Gary65

Laura Mallory is not gonna be happy about this xD

    • katie

You are fantastic. I almost forgot about our old friend Laura.

      • Gary65

Yeah I’ve been listening to old eps of mugglecast(or I was until the site crashed). Personally, I think she’s best forgotten.

        • katie

Yes! That’s wonderful. Upon reading your comment, my first thought was of my first introduction to Laura Mallory…listening to Mugglecast in the bleachers while my brother was at some random sports practice. Mugglecast is linked to so many random memories.

          • Gary65

I know. Sadly, with the site down, and not returning any time soon it seems, those of use a little late to the game aren’t having much luck making random memories of our own. EMERSON, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED US???

We should get Andrew to spy on Spartz and release a digit of Emerson’s phone no. for every day the site is down xD

          • katie

I’m still bitter over my lack of a Pickle Pack shirt.

was I the only one who thought they were supposed to be available through pottermore’s site

  • upper_westsider

I love this idea!  It will make JKR’s brilliant work available to even more people. LOVE YA JKR!

  • ladybirds

Does that mean they are not going to sell it through Pottermore or any other seller like amazon but only lend it?
