If you haven’t seen or even heard of Hugo, you don’t get an opinion as to whether its special effects are better than HP or not.

It is a good movie, but its special effects are few and far between, andaren’t great. It’s a bit of a joke that it won over HP or ROTPOTA, or even Transformers, just goes to show that the Academy vote for the films they like, regardless of whether they deserve the award in question.

I totally agree. The visual effects in Planet of the Apes and in Deathly Hallows totally topped Hugo. In Deathly Hallows they brought creatures to life that never were, not to mention making magic and spells seem like a natural thing. Also in Planet of the Apes they had to recreated animals we already knew and did so flawlessly. Hugo… I don’t even want to think about it. When I remember what grandeur visual effects Hugo accomplished I might reply

I’m not one of those “Potter should have won ALL the major categories!” fans but it was truly robbed in the special effects and makeup categories. The effects in Hugo were very good, but the overall scope and degree of the ones in DHP2 were nothing short of phenomenal. And the makeup in The Iron Lady was also quite good, but Meryl Streep’s acting is what made her character’s old age so convincing not what was on her face. Besides, how can you compare making someone old to making goblins???

While I thought that Hugo was a fantastic movie, it had very little special effects compared to Deathly Hallows Part 2. I’m not surprised that the movie didn’t win any of those awards, but I’m still shocked that it was only nominated for 3 of them.

If Alan Rickman was nominated for Best Supporting Actor he definitely should’ve won, and the same goes for Alexandre Desplat and Best Music…

Well, I think I know why Desplat wasn’t nominated for music — I think too much was inspired by John Williams, in the same way that Shakespeare in Love couldn’t be nominated for Best Screenplay since so many of its lines were from Shakespeare.

Really Oscars, Really?? Harry Potter has done so much, the movie industry being that. The first movie proved that unknowns/nearly unknown young actors could give just as much, if not more, than the veterans they worked with, not to mention the excellent visual effects, wardrobe, scenery, and cinematography. The second movie wasn’t just a sequel, it was even better, showing that the young stars had matured in their acting and were getting even better, not to mention everything else was brilliant. The third movie showed that the franchise could survive anything, including the unfortunate death of a beloved actor. The actors themselves grew even more, the effects got even better, and the wardrobe department was even better. Then the fourth, the fifth, the sixth, seventh, eighth? I could go on and on. And yet, the Oscars have never given them any props. Even in the montage of movies, they were noticeably absent while Twilight made an appearance. (Let’s be honest for a second, as movies go, they all suck). It really is a shame that the Old White Dudes who make up the academy are too far up their own butts to realize how good it truly is simply because it’s popular. It seems as though they’re Hipsters.

Hugo getting all these awards is pretty much a slap in the face to HP. I agree with Dan Radcliffe with his whole “why them and not us?” statement from a few weeks ago. I won’t be at all suprised it if goes home with the Best Picture award, based on how it’s raking them in (Visual Effects? Are they for real?) But, in a way, I’m kind of glad that HP didn’t get anything. The fact that the only recognition that the Academy can offer the HP franchise is a joke at HP’s expense pretty much solidifies how narrow minded they are.

I’m not surprised TBH. I had a feeling it would end like this just because of the way the Academy is. Honestly though, in the long run…. it really isn’t going to matter. There are so many ‘Oscar’ movies in the past that no even cares about anymore. Hurt Locker comes to mind. While these movies are probably pretty good, I think they will die out much faster than the Potter series. People aren’t going to be talking about them in a few years, but I truly believe we will still be talking about Potter. I think it will be one of those franchises that live on. One that we will share with our children. I think the longevity of the series is a lot more important than an award. I think the fact that fans are still here and showing their disappointment after the end of the movies shows how dedicated we are as fans.

I am sure that I am in the minority but I honestly am not that surprised or upset. Compared to the books, the movies really weren’t that good. The books were an incredible series that I believe will be iconic/classic literature for decades to come. The movies, were pretty good. Just like countless other movies. Compared to the books, the movies really didn’t shine in the same way. The story is JK Rowling’s and that’s what made the HP movies incredible, the story. I don’t think the screen play was ever adapted the way it should have been(with the possible exception of DH2). The acting was always good, but never awe inspiring(again, with the exception of Rickman in DH2). It’s not ‘dissing’ Harry Potter, but I think just looking at them objectively. I think, as fans of Harry Potter, it is difficult in our minds to separate the series from the movies and that is why so many are so upset.

Sorry to burst people’s bubbles, but the Academy is not full of Hypable readers/Harry Potter geeks…. Considering the recent news story outlining the demographics of the group, it’s no surprise. Though Harry deserves more than just a shrug from the Academy, we all give the support that several films that win Oscars will never receive. Heck, do Oscar winners ever really impact the majority of us anyway?

I’m a realist, I understand DH2 wasn’t the best film and there were actually better potter films along the way. The fact remains that Hugo was not a good movie and won twice over DH2 and Iron Lady’s make up was just regular make up? I mean how can you give an award to someone who just did normal make up? My wife does that make up every day, you mean to tell me she deserves an oscar? The crew of HP created unimaginable creatures through make up and prosthetics over 10 years and they don’t deserve some recognition? Come on.

The thing about the academy is that they don’t take films like Harry potter seriously, and that’s not fair. The LOTR was lucky to win awards in that category because fantasy doesn’t get awards that much. Harry Potter should have won make up. Hands down. And Hugo didn’t deserve that many awards. I watched Celeb Apprentice Instead. Figured that HP would get snubbed. I know why it didnt get the nom for best score…because a lot of the music was J williams stuff. If anything they should of got best Score for S Stone. I mean who doesnt recognize Hedwig”s Theme? Or even DH pt 1. I liked that score too! But alas, earwax.

I honestly wasn’t surprised. Like the article says, the average oscar voter is a 62 year old white guy. The oscars aren’t based on popularity. Personally, I have never been fond of the acting in the movies, so I wasn’t surprised when it didn’t get nominated for any of those categories, but I thought for sure that it would win for visual effects.

I wish people would stop calling Harry Potter fans unreasonable for wanting the series to win. Yes, we’re biased. But outside of our little Potterhead bubble, Deathly Hallows was still a brilliant film, even to the casual viewer. The movie recieved very impressive reviews from critics. Plenty of people I know who aren’t familiar with the series or just don’t usually like it, enjoyed the last film. You never heard anything negative about Part II last Summer, everyone who saw it loved it. It’s not just as fans, it was a great movie in it’s own right. That deserves some recognition!

I know that the joke was not meant to be insulting, but it really is AWFUL that they said that. Harry Potter contributed a lot in the film industry. It has awaken sleeping minds of children who doesn’t like reading. Changing the movie business, creating beautiful effects that is almost similar in the book. Please do not insult Harry Potter for even if all the movies nominated in the Oscars combined, They could never live up to the Harry Potter Legacy. The Iron Lady is about Margaret Thatcher played by Merly Streep, NOT Glenn Close. Glen Close starred in Albert Nobbs, which did NOT win an Oscar for best make-up. I’d argue that Albert Nobbs deserves the Oscar more than Iron Lady, but NEITHER of them deserve it more than Harry Potter. *sigh*

I was really upset they didn’t win anything. I never had high hopes for much but I really wanted them to nab at LEAST ONE and whoever would get it could accept it on behalf of the entire franchise and crew. I wanted just one win. I can’t believe it didn’t get any. That’s so cruel. Also, I just absolutely hated the show. It wasn’t funny or entertaining. At certain points I was actually offended by some of the jokes. Not surprised. And to be honest, I really don’t care. The Oscars, and pretty much all other awards shows, are kind of a joke in my opinion. The “voters” know what they like. They’ve never liked Harry, so why should this year have been any different? In the end, none of it matters. In a few years, no one’s going to remember who won those awards. But people will still be going to the Potter theme park. That’s way better than a trophy.

Honestly, this didn’t surprise me. Hear me out. We are all huge fans of HP. Yes, the books helped multiple generations enjoy reading, discover their imaginations, and so on. The movies put faces to the names and they have multi-watch value.

Even though Potter was a huge revenue booster (and trust me, that’s all it’ll ever be to WB), it only had a specific audience. Mostly the 9-35 bunch. Yes, I also know that there was a smatter of slightly older people in that group.

Like that news organization in LA pointed out, the Academy is most likely to have members that are twice the highest average age of the Potter fandom.

If the Academy just gave awards for movies that “stuck it out” or were “blockbusters”, think of all the movies that should win. Dare I to say the ‘t’ word?

Yes, I love Harry Potter and his story, but we’ve had ten years of it. It doesn’t need any more recognition than it’s name. Those dumb little pornographic trophies have ruled over the movie industry for a long time, and it has influenced what movies are good, and which aren’t.

I definitely think that Harry Potter should’ve won at LEAST one Oscar (though I personally believe that it should’ve won more). At lot of people are saying that you should’ve expected it or that you shouldn’t let it destroy your memory of Harry Potter, but the thing is is that the cast and crew of Harry Potter have put in so much hard work, that they deserve that recognition.

It’s not about justifying Harry Potter’s place in the world–it certainly doesn’t need that–it’s about giving credit where credit is due. They did not get their deserved credit; instead, they were passed over for mediocre attempts at the award categories in which Harry Potter should have won.

I cannot say I’m not disappointed. But reading through these comments, and thinking it thoroughly, i’ve figured sth out! What does HP have that a lot of these “award-worthy” films don’t? Well, a legacy; a legacy of love and loyalty and admiration for these films. I can’t really judge the academy awards of this year cuz i had seen just 2 films of the 9 that were nominated (war horse and midnight in paris). So not having watched hugo, I can’t really confirm that HP should’ve won visual effects (and art direction too), yet I hardly believe that hugo’s effects could’ve been any better. I haven’t watched the iron lady either, but basing myself on the pics they showed, i can totally say that the make up oscar should’ve been for potter or, if not, for albert nobbs. Iron lady’s was good, but not NEARLY as great as potter’s! not to mention desplat’s snub (not for the nom, but for the oscar itself) and for serra, and for the soun dept. And here I’m just talking about DH2! How many oscars have the 8 hp films deserved and not gotten even a nomination! Imo, more than i can count.
But what has happened, has happened. Some may think that i’m a biased HP fan who thinks the only movie out there is hp. Well, I’m not. I love movies, and even though HP movies are my favorites, I know there are better movies out there; hell, I know there were better movies out there this year, and i love great films. Yet wanting HP to win has nothing to do with fandom; I was just demandin credit where credit was due. I knew it wouldnt be nominated for movie, or director, or acting (even though i loved those 3 aspects!). But for all the technical awards it did deserve, and i go back to the 1st movie, the academy should have recognised this series!
Yet the didn’t. And you know what? Thats ok. Because HP doesnt need a golden statue or a lame joke afterwards to be good. Its great on its own accord, and its legacy is greater than all of those movies combined! And the filmmakers know it! And we know it! And that’s what matters! This series will go down to history, among many other things, like the series that never won an oscar yet deserved lots of them! As the highest-grossing film franchise ever made! And as the most loved series (books and movies) ever made! Long Live HP!!

To me, it doesn’t matter that Harry Potter didn’t win an Oscar. So many people are united in their love for the movies, and the books, and that makes me so incredibly happy. Harry doesn’t need an Oscar to prove that.

I think the deathly hallows deserves visual effects. Hugo had a few visual effects but harry potter had so much more. Hogwarts castle, battle scenes, everything was very well animated and looked very realistic. The age group is srupidbecause I have been watching them since I was 5 and my family watches too (range from 12-45) even my grandparents watch them! So, I think the people who vote for these things should actually watch the movies and evaluate all of the details put into the film. I would like to be a judge so everyone can be happy with the oscar winners and the films that deserve the oscars get them. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows part 2 deserved it!
