Deathly Hallows – Part 2 did not win any of the Academy Awards it was nominated for. And with that, the Harry Potter franchise never won an Oscar.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 had been nominated in the Art Direction, Make Up, and Visual Effects categories.

Art Direction went to Hugo, Make Up went to The Iron Lady, and Visual Effects went to Hugo.

Here on Hypable there’s been quite a bit of discussion over the past few months about Potter’s Oscar chances by our own visitors:

- 5 reasons why Deathly Hallows – Part 2 won’t win at the Oscars.

- Deathly Hallows – Part 2 deserves every Oscar it can win.

- Why Deathly Hallows DOES deserve to be recognized at the Oscars.

- Why Deathly Hallows deserves just one Oscar.

As we told you the other day, the average Oscar voter is a 62 year old white male. Not exactly Harry’s audience.

mee too i had to put it into 2 parts ….. no pun intended

  • Sara

    Visual Effects went to Hugo!!!

  • Outkastzgotti

This is bullshit andrew. HP should’ve won! What the hell is hugo anyway??

    • Luna

some stupid movie that people find amazing but i find as total crap

    • CliveRogan

If you haven’t seen or even heard of Hugo, you don’t get an opinion as to whether its special effects are better than HP or not.

It is a good movie, but its special effects are few and far between, andaren’t great.  It’s a bit of a joke that it won over HP or ROTPOTA, or even Transformers, just goes to show that the Academy vote for the films they like, regardless of whether they deserve the award in question.

  • Luna97831

i was trying to think of a really witty harry potter phrase for this one… it’ll come to me eventually. that’s the best i can do for now.

  • Kate

I thought they were going to end up doing a tribute. Instead..a joke was made. This is crap.

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I was slightly tipsy when that joke was made, so I thought that it was the introduction to a tribute. I was so tragically disappointed when it wasn’t :/

    • goldensnidget

THERE WAS A JOKE? I didn’t watch it. Please say it wasn’t too mean :(

      • jp

something like harry potter making 7 billion dollars but only paying 14% income tax.

        • Daughter of Eve

and one in the opening montage in which Harry and Voldie are duelling, the final duel, and Billy Crystal saying something like, “can’t you two just get along?”

    • Glaciusx

They’re nothing but obnoxious, venomous slime who only care about big Hollywood names and stupid artsy indie films. I find that highly pathetic! I’m EXTREMELY glad I didn’t waste precious hours of my time/life sitting through that tripe.

  • Sara

There will never be a next year………. D,:

  • Alazear2

If these awards dont prove that the academy is a biased organization then I dont know what will. Make up should have been an easy win considering what was done on set, and Visual effects should have been in the bag (and if harry potter didnt win planet of the apes sure as hell should have won).

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1381504748 Hibaq Farah

I think the scene at the end was the straw. If they had done it better… The make up in Iron Lady was amazing.

      • Alazear2

I wont deny that the makeup in the iron lady was good, and that the epilogue was pretty bad, but looking at the goblins to the blood splattered fighters was an acomlishment far greater than making Meryl Streep look a little younger and older.

    • sarazarah

I totally agree. The visual effects in Planet of the Apes and in Deathly Hallows totally topped Hugo.  In Deathly Hallows they brought creatures to life that never were, not to mention making magic and spells seem like a natural thing.  Also in Planet of the Apes they had to recreated animals we already knew and did so flawlessly.  Hugo… I don’t even want to think about it.  When I remember what grandeur visual effects Hugo accomplished I might reply

  • Laura

I’m not one of those “Potter should have won ALL the major categories!” fans but it was truly robbed in the special effects and makeup categories. The effects in Hugo were very good, but the overall scope and degree of the ones in DHP2 were nothing short of phenomenal. And the makeup in The Iron Lady was also quite good, but Meryl Streep’s acting is what made her character’s old age so convincing not what was on her face. Besides, how can you compare making someone old to making goblins???

    • Plat

Yes seriously. The winners of make-up and effects were pretty bare of what they were said to have. It was an obvious rob.

  • Kay

sad. the whole thing is just sad.

  • http://twitter.com/w_lowry Will Lowry

The Academy needs to stop with the evident anti-Potter agenda. First they snub Harry Potter from the montages, then they snub Harry Potter for a decade over 8  extremely popular films and then right when it seems like Billy Crystal is going to give it a tribute, they make a money joke. :/

    • AshQuill

Hmpf, so glad I didn’t watch this year. I also heard a little something about them sneaking in some Twilight in there? Outrageous.

    • FlamingC

What was the joke? Can someone please tell me?

      • Jnthn44

he said something about them making 7 billion dollars and only paying 14% taxes, like most of his jokes through the night, it got barely any giggles

        • FlamingC

WTH? I’m glad I didn’t bother sitting through that crap…

    • Harry Potter Fan

Harry Potter doesn’t need to be labeled “Academy Award winner”. All you need to get people’s attention is “Harry Potter”. The series has millions of fans from different countries, cultures and ages.
Guys don’t let this spoil any fond memories you have for Harry Potter it really doesn’t matter we will love it more generations will. However I want to quote Al Pacino’s Colonel Slade in “Scent of a woman”:
“If I were the man I was five years ago I’d bring a FLAME THROWER TO THIS PLACE”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003304821956 Lydia Gerike

The academy took my every hope and smashed it with 8 words: And, the, award, goes, to, Iron, Lady, [and] Hugo

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.kay2 Lauren Glover

Grrrr. That’s all I have to say about that.

    2 words, bull sh!t

  • Alex Anderlik

While I thought that Hugo was a fantastic movie, it had very little special effects compared to Deathly Hallows Part 2.  I’m not surprised that the movie didn’t win any of those awards, but I’m still shocked that it was only nominated for 3 of them.

If Alan Rickman was nominated for Best Supporting Actor he definitely should’ve won, and the same goes for Alexandre Desplat and Best Music…

On the bright side, the Academy actually has an extremely biased taste in movies and I take their opinions for very little — I scroll through this all the time:
Anyways, it’s a real shame, but I’m not totally shocked.  Just disappointed.

    • carilyn

Well, I think I know why Desplat wasn’t nominated for music — I think too much was inspired by John Williams, in the same way that Shakespeare in Love couldn’t be nominated for Best Screenplay since so many of its lines were from Shakespeare.
Nonetheless the whole thing makes me pretty sad.

  • Catherine

I’m gonna cry. 62 year-old white men SUCK.

  • Martin

I’m very happy.  Harry Potter is above the Oscars.  An award would taint the name of Potter :p

  • Disraeli

Do I get to say; I told you so.

  • Zuleyma Martinez

not only that but then they make a joke about potter WTF!? so they dont give us the award the least you could do is say something meaningful no instead you make a stupid ass joke.

  • http://twitter.com/KatieOsterman Katie Osterman

I am so disappointed (but in reality, I could see this coming). Billy Crystal began a what seemed like a very promising tribute, but…then nothing. DOES HARRY NOT DESERVE RECOGNITION? I mean, he changed an ENTIRE generation. I have absolutely no idea what my life would be like if I have never read the words: “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they
were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” Now, it will have to be enough to know that we changed history and became “The Franchise That Never Won.”

    • Disraeli

      Yes. You read the words.

The books have been honoured and revered because they deserve it completely. The films deserve a spot on your shelf, just next to some other films that you sometimes forget you have.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XKZIG7MXV2IMZZ3JDKGSNMJ2RE Chris

Ugh, whatever. I had a bad feeling this would happen, but I figured surely the Academy wouldn’t be so stupid as to not give DH2 a single thing! I don’t mean to sound pretentious, but those Oscars needed HP more than HP needed an Oscar.

    • Disraeli

Yes, the Academy Awards, decades of life. Long-running. Doesn’t seem to be slipping “too much”, needed Harry Potter…

      … Don’t be dumb.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XKZIG7MXV2IMZZ3JDKGSNMJ2RE Chris

Okay, maybe I was a little over-the-top. I kinda meant in perspective of their slipping ratings, and their increasing irrelevance in the younger demographic that is so sought after.

  • Lily

No, I’m happy this happened. This just shows how above the Oscars that Harry Potter is. I still don’t understand why our fandom has been continually garnering for the approval of, as above, 62 year old white males, to tell us that the Harry Potter films were well done.

  • http://twitter.com/Factuality Factuality

Let me tell you what, though, the makeup for The Iron Lady was INCREDIBLE. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m disappointed for Potter, but let’s be real: it has never needed awards to distinguish it as a standout in modern film.

  • Cam-ken

I’ve lost all respect for the acadamy. Not just as a Harry potter fan but as an aspiring film maker.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XKZIG7MXV2IMZZ3JDKGSNMJ2RE Chris

I feel the exact same way :/

    • http://www.youtube.com/fravit Fravit

So then, as an aspiring film maker, should you ever reach a level of prestige to where you were awarded an Oscar, you’re saying you’d the award from Academy as a form of protest?

      • Cam-ken

Not gonna lie, I’ve dreamed of that :P

    • SquibPerson

if you ever get the chance to be on the Oscar’s stage instead of thanking the acadamy you should thank harry potter movies and apologize that they were never awarded the chance to stand were you are standing then host your award and say “to harry potter the boy who lived”

      • Cam-ken

It’s my life goal, never think It’d ever happen in a trillion years that I’d ever come close to a nomination but It’s still a goal.

This is not the way to honor 10 years of hard work by talented and dedicated people from a film series that a generation grew up on. UGH. Switching to the BAFTAS.

  • Flitwick

I am a Potter Head and this… This is Infuriating. i just want to… Ugh. how can Harry Potter NOT win an award. This is a sign! Muggles are under the Imperius curse. Someone is playing a trick on us.This can’t be true. In my mind Harry Potter won. Get your wands out everybody!! We have to find the one responsible for this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Nguyen/100002019886179 Andrew Nguyen

well i just cried for the past 20 minutes not bothering to watch the rest of the oscars. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU im going to cry myself to sleep now. thank you oscars for crushing harry potter fans hearts all around the world.

  • Summer

Really? The iron lady won best makeup? Can they turn someone into a GOBLIN?

  • Luna

please be warned you may be expecting some very very very miffed letters or other horrible things from all the Potter fans

  • Angelina

Those other films were great, but Harry Potter deserved to win at least for visual effects! The amount of visual effects work that went into these eight films was incredible and very deserving of an oscar. And to add insult to injury Potter was not in the montage and then instead of paying tribute to these amazing films a joke was made…As if it wasn’t bad enough that Alan Rickman didn’t get nominated for best supporting actor…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XKZIG7MXV2IMZZ3JDKGSNMJ2RE Chris

Yes, because The Iron Lady and Hugo are  truly the most iconic films that the whole world will still remember in 5 years -______-

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XKZIG7MXV2IMZZ3JDKGSNMJ2RE Chris

Not that the Oscars are made to award films just because they are iconic, but still.

  • HungryStarkidGleekwithHP

Rubbish I say. The Academy is stupid for not voting HP ftw. They showed clips of Edward and Bella making out but not of Snape cradling Lily or Ron and Hermione’s kiss. Not anything from Harry Potter!!!! :/

  • Bernardotriana

I am pissed off!! FUCK the academy!

  • Evelyn

Really Oscars, Really?? Harry Potter has done so much, the movie industry being that. The first movie proved that unknowns/nearly unknown young actors could give just as much, if not more, than the veterans they worked with, not to mention the excellent visual effects, wardrobe, scenery, and cinematography. The second movie wasn’t just a sequel, it was even better, showing that the young stars had matured in their acting and were getting even better, not to mention everything else was brilliant. The third movie showed that the franchise could survive anything, including the unfortunate death of a beloved actor. The actors themselves grew even more, the effects got even better, and the wardrobe department was even better. Then the fourth, the fifth, the sixth, seventh, eighth? I could go on and on. And yet, the Oscars have never given them any props. Even in the montage of movies, they were noticeably absent while Twilight made an appearance. (Let’s be honest for a second, as movies go, they all suck). It really is a shame that the Old White Dudes who make up the academy are too far up their own butts to realize how good it truly is simply because it’s popular. It seems as though they’re Hipsters.

The academy needs to stop playing bingo

  • Anna

If nothing else, HP should have gotten Makeup. Yes, the Iron Lady people made Meryl Streep look like Margaret Thatcher. But the Harry Potter artists made HOW many brilliant goblins and wounds and whatever else you can think of? Again and again and again, for ten years, flawlessly. All eight of those films were amazing and they won nothing, ever. That’s obnoxious.
We don’t need an award to know how good the movies are, but it would be nice to get some recognition. And the almost-tribute-turned-political-joke? Really?!They’re hipster film snobs, I’m telling you.

  • Dlmarvin05

Potter doesn’t need those cheap little statues to be magical!

  • Guest

The Iron Lady wins best makeup? I COULD DO HER MAKEUP. I’m not saying HP shouldn’t have lost because at least Glenn Close was transformed into a MAN & was convincing. Giving the award to Meryl Streep’s makeup artist is a freaking JOKE & might as well come from a MAC counter at Nordstrom. A 14 year old could have done it. Way to give ZERO credit to actual makeup ARTISTS. Harry Potter & the other nominees were completely robbed.

    • Sophie

I completely agree, I was furious when they announced that. They made people into freaking GOBLINS, and the award goes to just a big of red lipstick? Ridiculous.

      • Guest

Exactly. And they had pictures to go off of to make her look like Margaret Thatcher. The artists that worked on HP used their IMAGINATION to make every one goblin look a world different from the other 50. W.T.F.

        • Disraeli

Margaret Thatcher doesn’t have pictures. She’s like a vampire, it’s impossible to take a photo of her. That’s what made their job so impressive. Obviously.

    • Liderc

Agreed.  Iron Lady was just normal make up, women do it every day.  I think people just don’t realize the work that goes into Potters make up and the creation of characters.  It’s sad that we even have to beg for an award in this crap category lol.

  • FlamingC

K since I’m too busy not watching the Oscars I want to know exactly what “joke” they made about Potter. Please somebody if you saw it and remember it please reply!

    • kate

yeah i live in Aussie seen a thousand of comments aout this “joke” what the hell was it?

  • Andromeda

Hugo getting all these awards is pretty much a slap in the face to HP. I agree with Dan Radcliffe with his whole “why them and not us?” statement from a few weeks ago. I won’t be at all suprised it if goes home with the Best Picture award, based on how it’s raking them in (Visual Effects? Are they for real?) But, in a way, I’m kind of glad that HP didn’t get anything. The fact that the only recognition that the Academy can offer the HP franchise is a joke at HP’s expense pretty much solidifies how narrow minded they are.

  • Trixie99

I’m not surprised TBH.  I had a feeling it would end like this just because of the way the Academy is.  Honestly though, in the long run…. it really isn’t going to matter.  There are so many ‘Oscar’ movies in the past that no even cares about anymore.  Hurt Locker comes to mind.  While these movies are probably pretty good, I think they will die out much faster than the Potter series.  People aren’t going to be talking about them in a few years, but I truly believe we will still be talking about Potter.  I think it will be one of those franchises that live on.  One that we will share with our children.  I think the longevity of the series is a lot more important than an award.  I think the fact that fans are still here and showing their disappointment after the end of the movies shows how dedicated we are as fans.

    • Tom

So true. Just think, 1980 was the year that Stars Wars: Empire Strikes Back was released, a legendary film that people still talk about today. Which film won Best Picture that year? ‘Ordinary People’. Anyone ever heard of or seen that film? Not many. Harry Potter will have a similar legacy to Star Wars.

    • Morsmordre79

Exactly. While “The Artist” was a good film, it’s simply not going to be remembered like Harry Potter will. I give it 2 or 3 years before I start seeing it in the $5 bin at Walmart with Slumdog Millionaire and Crash.

  • http://www.facebook.com/raul.vela1 Raul Vela

then at visual effects hugo should not have won.. harry potter should have won by far and if not the planet of the apes. this is outrageous harry potter THE best franchise in the world followed by star wars lord of the rings etc and it is the one that does not have oscars. Oscars are a joke now..

    • Liderc

Agreed.  Planet of the Apes should have won if not for HP, Hugo was a ridiculous movie lol and god awfully boring and long.

The thing that really want to know is, WHY? I mean they could have at LEAST done a tribute or something to honor the spectacular series, But NO! Just some stupid joke!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1073580037 Alexis Walker-Sexton

I am sure that I am in the minority but I honestly am not that surprised or upset. Compared to the books, the movies really weren’t that good. The books were an incredible series that I believe will be iconic/classic literature for decades to come. The movies, were pretty good. Just like countless other movies. Compared to the books, the movies really didn’t shine in the same way. The story is JK Rowling’s and that’s what made the HP movies incredible, the story. I don’t think the screen play was ever adapted the way it should have been(with the possible exception of DH2). The acting was always good, but never awe inspiring(again, with the exception of Rickman in DH2). It’s not ‘dissing’ Harry Potter, but I think just looking at them objectively. I think, as fans of Harry Potter, it is difficult in our minds to separate the series from the movies and that is why so many are so upset.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1073580037 Alexis Walker-Sexton

As for the the awards it was nominated for: It was up against some great works of art. I don’t agree with the winner(s) though. Personally, I think the Oscar it deserved to be nominated for and win was best score.

this is why I hate award shows. it was bad enough that they barely got nominated and didn’t even win like they deserved instead they can’t even be managed into the montage but it’s no problem for twilight.. And not to mentioned joked upon .. ridiculous

  • Sandra07

    Just 4 words: f*ck the f*cking academy ¬¬

  • http://twitter.com/LauraK483 Laura Krause

I CALL BULLSHIT! Their treatment of the Potter franchise combined with the latest in not-so-stellar gimmicks/hosts has brought me to a decision. From now on I watch the Oscars only for fashion.

      fashion is good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000100281324 Gates Krystal

    Dear Academy jerks,

Are you joking me?  I mean, seriously?  Not a single award?  That’s going to take time (maybe 10 years, 1 to make up for each year spent making the movies you shunned), but eventually I may get over your horrible egocentric decision to put American movies before good movies (not to say all American movies are crap).  But you put Twilight in a montage?  And the most Harry Potter got was a bad joke?  No.  Not. Cool.  Especially when Harry Potter had better visual effects than Hugo (where were the amazing flying dragons, giants, burning castles, and memories from Snape’s childhood in Hugo?  Eh?) and makeup (I didn’t see any intense battle wounds or goblins in The Iron Lady) and art direction (DID YOU NOT SEE THE BURNING CASTLE THAT IS AN ICON OF AN ENTIRE FREAKING GENERATION?!).

I hope you enjoy your awards while you can.  We’re watching the Voldies next year!  You are unbelievable.  These films, and especially the series as a whole, stretch generational gaps and physical boundaries and have done so much for so many people.  And you don’t even give them a nod.  I. am. ashamed.

    • moonshoespotter1712

what was the joke? i missed it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000100281324 Gates Krystal

It was something by Billy Crystal, I’m not entirely sure.  I didn’t watch the Oscars (because of the anti-Potter snubbing, obviously) but I heard people talking about it.  It’s still pathetic, I mean, Harry is an icon of a generation!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000508407296 Luke Payne

While the joke did insult me, I honestly was a little disappointed by the last Potter movie. I still felt they changed too much and it strayed too far from my original vision. Meanwhile, I thought “Hugo” was phenomenal. Harry will always be in my heart, but hey, the books were better than the movies. Let the hate on me begin.

  • http://twitter.com/HungerGames4all Rae

This was just beyond upsetting and embarrassing. Just. One. Freakin’. Award. And you couldn’t even give us that. 8 movies. Over 7 billion $ and not a single oscar. Pathetic. Hugo robbed us of Visual effects. And a snippet of Twilight was shown. Wow…this really hurts.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FGLB3NS54SZPZ4A2SX34CZG2YU Corbin Bolies

Sad day in PotterLand, very sad day indeed……. :’(

  • Megan

I understand that we didn’t win any awards, fine. But, we deserve at least a nod. They showed a clip of a Twilight film and NOTHING for Harry Potter ? How is this even possible ? All I wanted was some small commemoration for the childhood’s of MILLIONS of fans WORLDWIDE. It is, after all, the BIGGEST movie series in history !

    • glee_hp_hungergames_fan

They did show a clip of Harry and Voldemort doing the Avada Kedavra/Expelliarmus thing in the opening number, but that was it.

    • SquibPerson

      lol totally

  • Kavitha

I am not surprised, but I am disappointed. I do think however, that the disappointment of the fans as a whole shows just how amazing this series is.

  • Misswriter18

I think people need to get over the fact that Harry Potter didn’t win. The films that beat them did better based on the categories they were nominated for. It doesn’t mean that Harry Potter wasn’t great, and being nominated was an honor in itself. Can’t HP fans at least be happy that it was nominated? I mean, really. Let other films get the recognition needed through winning…

And please, don’t start freaking out at me for my opinion. There’s no point in bashing other fans.

    • AshQuill

Ok, the Academy didn’t want to award it anything. Yes, I’m disappointed, but why didn’t they just leave it at that? They had to make a stupid joke about it afterwards? That’s taking it to a whole other level.

      • Misswriter18

It is called a joke. Seriously, relax. And the point was: most of the films nominated rely on the Oscars for box office numbers. Harry Potter doesn’t need that since they’ve made more money than all of them combined.

    • moonshoespotter1712

not bashing you, just saying that i think the makeup in hp was amazing and deserved that win.

I completely agree. I think it could have gone to either Albert Nobbs (they made a woman look convincingly like a man) or Harry Potter (they turned people into goblins, for goodness sake). But there didn’t seem to be anything that outstanding about the Iron Lady. It looks like they just made Meryl Steep look nice.

Our username sums up my life….

      • Misswriter18

I believe that it should’ve gone to Albert Nobbs… But, I can see why they gave it to The Iron Lady.

    • Liderc

Look, the final HP movie wasn’t great, but you honestly think Iron Lady had better make up than DH2?
Comon’ anyone could have done the make up for Iron Lady, they were just normal old people…

    • Hermione A

The film that beat it for make up was the worst thing ever. Ooohhh normal make up… I’d like to see them turn someone into a goblin….

Harry Potter nerd in me: “WHAT THE HELL, ACADEMY?” Movie nerd in me: “WHAT THE HELL, ACADEMY?”

  • Tigerhoof

Please send your hate mail in two parts to the academy till the end of your days.
No tribute, lame joke, and a twilight clip. Remember that.

    • Dispatch

      We should.

  • hpatdh33

Very sad, Hugo was crap compared to Potter.

    • Blake

I liked Hugo but the fact that it beat out Potter in the Visual Effects category is unbelievable.

      • hpatdh33

Yeah i walked out of the movie liking it but i never thought of it as a masterpiece or anything!

  • Cori720

Sorry to burst people’s bubbles, but the Academy is not full of Hypable readers/Harry Potter geeks…. Considering the recent news story outlining the demographics of the group, it’s no surprise. Though Harry deserves more than just a shrug from the Academy, we all give the support that several films that win Oscars will never receive. Heck, do Oscar winners ever really impact the majority of us anyway?

  • RussellTurner

Well…. not too many Oscar winners have a theme park ;)

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

  • Mary

Of course it didn’t win. These are the Oscars we’re talking about; Where the voters don’t even have to view the films they are voting for. Did anyone else read that in the credits? Just a fun fact.

The Oscars aren’t as professional as you would think these days. They’re a bunch of snobby rich people voting for their buddies. Nothing more.

  • Lily Hensly

Oh Please. We ALL knew this was coming. Screw the Oscars! Harry Potter is out of their league.

  • Liderc

I’m a realist, I understand DH2 wasn’t the best film and there were actually better potter films along the way.  The fact remains that Hugo was not a good movie and won twice over DH2 and Iron Lady’s make up was just regular make up?  I mean how can you give an award to someone who just did normal make up?  My wife does that make up every day, you mean to tell me she deserves an oscar?  The crew of HP created unimaginable creatures through make up and prosthetics over 10 years and they don’t deserve some recognition?  Come on.

  • SquibPerson

not winning the awards as a HP fan im outraged, as book HP fan not movie HP fan I can understand
BUT what bugs me the Most; the end of an epeic series came this year and the best you can do is money joke that realy wasn’t funny that is carp of the bull
and and to put twilight in the montage and leave harry out that is just a sacrilege

  • http://twitter.com/WolfCub400 Anna Baum

Ok, so it didn’t win an oscar, or get any tribute – both of which were deserved – but it doesn’t need any. We are going to remember Harry Potter, love it, watch the films in 20, 30 years time with an oscar or not. And you can’t say that for many films that do win the oscars.

  • kate

i’m sorry i watched the Hugo movies but good someone please tell me what scene had ground-breaking effects that outmatched both Harry Potter and Rise of the Planet Apes????

    • moonshoespotter1712

hmm i thought at least rotpota would win… if not hp.

  • gingerbroad

Harry Potter was snubbed because the Academy voters were mostly American.  And J.K. Rowling (rightly)refused to allow American actors to play British, French, Scottish etc. parts.

  • Rdh014

I don’t normally curse online but: FUCK YOU OSCARS.

THIS IS A FUCKING OUTRAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s officiam: The oscars mean NOTHING

  • http://twitter.com/Lorentio16 Lauren Dipple

There is no doubt in my mind that this is definitely snobbery. Deathly Hallows was one of if not the best reviewed films of the year. in my opinion the BAFTA’s and Oscars can disaperate out of my life.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-T-Guerrero/100000073532576 Daniel T. Guerrero

I guess I can MAYBE see why HP lost in visual effects and costume, but MAKEUP??? I love Meryl, but she didn’t look very different from her everyday get-up. Isn’t that the idea of superb makeup?? To transform you? HOW the hell did her Iron Lady makeup beat that of the Dark Lord’s????? I swear I felt an oncoming Unforgivable Curse from at least one person in the crowd when a tribute wasn’t made -.-

  • Sheikh

This is so unfair!!! An insult to the biggest franchise of all time. I was really dumbfounded when they announced the nominations. I mean come on…I thought it would WIN the Best Picture Award when I watched it.But all it got was a joke from the host.Unbelievable!!! Love you Potter. I’m gonna miss you……!!!

  • Gary65

    F*** THIS FOR A LOAD OF S***!!!

  • Grace

There’s a certain point where “snobbery” turns into insult.  I believe we have reached that point.

  • http://twitter.com/SarahKHansen skhansen

I’m not upset or surprised. The oscars usually pick films they like and ignore great films outside their little bubble. Honestly, I haven’t really cared about the oscars in years and I don’t need them to validate my tastes.

  • gleeky-potterhead

  • Bernardotriana

The boy who lived can live on without a stupid golden statue! I can’t lie I was upset knowing they didn’t win anything! Harry Potter is a WINNER to me

  • Aryia

And this is why I never even watched to Oscars.

  • Hermione A

The thing about the academy is that they don’t take films like Harry potter seriously, and that’s not fair. The LOTR was lucky to win awards in that category because fantasy doesn’t get awards that much. Harry Potter should have won make up. Hands down. And Hugo didn’t deserve that many awards. I mean seriously, a boy at a train station, I wonder where we’ve heard that before….

  • http://twitter.com/Willy_Tays Wil ϟ

At least Twilight wasn’t even nominated : D

  • Glaciusx

The Oscars can suck my dick. -__-

  • Witchfav

so what if they’re 62 year old white males?  Plenty of Potter readers are in their late eighties, even. And if they can enjoy Hugo, why not Potter?

  • bell

I watched Celeb Apprentice Instead. Figured that HP would get snubbed.  I know why it didnt get the nom for best score…because a lot of the music was J williams stuff. If anything they should of got best Score for S Stone. I mean who doesnt recognize Hedwig”s Theme? Or even DH pt 1. I liked that score too! But alas, earwax.

    • bell

Oh, and one more thing…Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank You!

  • Mdrich12

I honestly wasn’t surprised.  Like the article says, the average oscar voter is a 62 year old white guy.  The oscars aren’t based on popularity.  Personally, I have never been fond of the acting in the movies, so I wasn’t surprised when it didn’t get nominated for any of those categories, but I thought for sure that it would win for visual effects.

  • http://www.facebook.com/raul.vela1 Raul Vela

if meryl streep would have been mcgonagall she would have won best supporting actress like 2 times for the role and harry potter would have been recognized by the academy. oscars are a joke

  • PotterGleek

I wish people would stop calling Harry Potter fans unreasonable for wanting the series to win. Yes, we’re biased. But outside of our little Potterhead bubble, Deathly Hallows was still a brilliant film, even to the casual viewer. The movie recieved very impressive reviews from critics. Plenty of people I know who aren’t familiar with the series or just don’t usually like it, enjoyed the last film. You never heard anything negative about Part II last Summer, everyone who saw it loved it. It’s not just as fans, it was a great movie in it’s own right. That deserves some recognition!

  • Zack

    62 year old Academy members…

  • thegreatwanderlust

I know that the joke was not meant to be insulting, but it really is AWFUL that they said that. Harry Potter contributed a lot in the film industry. It has awaken sleeping minds of children who doesn’t like reading. Changing the movie business, creating beautiful effects that is almost similar in the book. Please do not insult Harry Potter for even if all the movies nominated in the Oscars combined, They could never live up to the Harry Potter Legacy. And we, Potterheads, accept the lose of the film because in our hearts, Harry Potter remains the winner. ALWAYS. Long Live Harry Potter! Long Live JK Rowling!

  • LiaCavasotto

I was never under the impression that HP was going to take home an Oscar but I was rooting for it with all my heart.

The only thing I’m really bitter about is that there really should have been somesort of tribute to HP, like many of us have been saying. It really was a huge achievement and deserves to be recognized in someway at the oscars.

  • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

At least at the BAFTA’s Harry Potter got an honorary award, unlike here. Seriously, I honestly hated the Oscars last night. Other than the fact ‘The Artist’ won Best Picture, Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress, and Jean Dujardin won Best Actor!! :)
They should feel ashamed. Not even ONE!

  • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

The iron lady won best makeup but they didn’t need much then since Glenn Close already looks like a man because she didn’t look much different. Go goblins!

    • Erika Vega

The Iron Lady is about Margaret Thatcher played by Merly Streep, NOT Glenn Close. Glen Close starred in Albert Nobbs, which did NOT win an Oscar for best make-up. I’d argue that Albert Nobbs deserves the Oscar more than Iron Lady, but NEITHER of them deserve it more than Harry Potter. *sigh*

  • Kronos2008

they raised the potter films like they would for a pig awaiting slaughter…sad sad

  • Erika Vega

I was really upset they didn’t win anything.  I never had high hopes for much but I really wanted them to nab at LEAST ONE and whoever would get it could accept it on behalf of the entire franchise and crew.  I wanted just one win.  I can’t  believe it didn’t get any.  That’s so cruel.  Also, I just absolutely hated the show. It wasn’t funny or entertaining.  At certain points I was actually offended by some of the jokes.  It was stupid.  Worst. Oscars. Ever.  I don’t really ever want to watch again.  I wish there was a way to get back at them.  The ratings need to seriously plummet or something.  gah…

  • Cookie Monster

Any way that I can get my owl to send the Academy a Howler?

  • Guest

Not surprised. And to be honest, I really don’t care. The Oscars, and pretty much all other awards shows, are kind of a joke in my opinion. The “voters” know what they like. They’ve never liked Harry, so why should this year have been any different? In the end, none of it matters. In a few years, no one’s going to remember who won those awards. But people will still be going to the Potter theme park. That’s way better than a trophy.

  • Water Potter Games Fan

It’s the Academy Awards fault disappointed Millions of Harry Potter
fans. But Awards shows are based on 100-200 peoples opinion
on movies that’s all awards show’s are! At least 60% of the harry
Potter fans want Potter to win the 30% don’t think DHP2 doesn’t
deserve it or did justice to the book and the other 10% don’t care
about the awards. Plus Harry Potter are worth more the Oscars
they influenced children to read books (Like me), find your inner strength,
and be the better person. So in my head Harry Potter deserves one award
that Jo said ” Stick with Harry intill the very end.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/emileems Emilee Marie Self

Honestly, this didn’t surprise me. Hear me out. We are all huge fans of HP. Yes, the books helped multiple generations enjoy reading, discover their imaginations, and so on. The movies put faces to the names and they have multi-watch value.

Even though Potter was a huge revenue booster (and trust me, that’s all it’ll ever be to WB), it only had a specific audience. Mostly the 9-35 bunch. Yes, I also know that there was a smatter of slightly older people in that group.

Like that news organization in LA pointed out, the Academy is most likely to have members that are twice the highest average age of the Potter fandom.

If the Academy just gave awards for movies that “stuck it out” or were “blockbusters”, think of all the movies that should win. Dare I to say the ‘t’ word?

Yes, I love Harry Potter and his story, but we’ve had ten years of it. It doesn’t need any more recognition than it’s name. Those dumb little pornographic trophies have ruled over the movie industry for a long time, and it has influenced what movies are good, and which aren’t.

For my next rant: The Pulitzer Prize

  • http://twitter.com/Tygridia tygridia

That’s what happens when an jury with old people give their opinion on a young-adults pop-culture film, that they don’t give a crap about what the audience think. As somebody who was in the ceremony yesterday would say, I’M IN A RAGE!!! I’M THE MADDEST I’VE EVER BEEN!!!

  • HPForever3 :)

Who cares if some ignorant Muggles can’t grasp the magic of Harry Potter because we did and we don’t need some goldie Voldies to prove it! Besides, the Academy voters are just jealous because they don’t have their own Chocolate Frog card and Harry does.

  • Caroline

Does it really matter? We all know, deep down, that Harry Potter is the best. Isn’t that more important than any old mini-statue? And, after all, for so many, Harry Potter is more than a movie, so why is a movie award so important?

  • kate

the oscars have just turned off the thousands of people who love potter. All those  people wont care about it anymore

  • Mrs Rachel_malfoy

I felt like the academy went into a room and screamed, in unison, ” Let Hugo win ALL the awards!!”

  • Alohomora

I just don’t understand WHY this happened!
I mean, it should have deserved at least one! And to be nominated for a few more too!

They have just COMPLETELY ignored it.

  • Connor Pflederer

    F*** THIS

  • Michelle

I definitely think that Harry Potter should’ve won at LEAST one Oscar (though I personally believe that it should’ve won more). At lot of people are saying that you should’ve expected it or that you shouldn’t let it destroy your memory of Harry Potter, but the thing is is that the cast and crew of Harry Potter have put in so much hard work, that they deserve that recognition.

It’s not about justifying Harry Potter’s place in the world–it certainly doesn’t need that–it’s about giving credit where credit is due. They did not get their deserved credit; instead, they were passed over for mediocre attempts at the award categories in which Harry Potter should have won.

  • Aart223

And they lost to iron lady for best makeup… how is putting lipstick on meryl streep worth anything! Thats the category im most upset about losing:(

  • Santiarof

I cannot say I’m not disappointed. But reading through these comments, and thinking it thoroughly, i’ve figured sth out! What does HP have that a lot of these “award-worthy” films don’t? Well, a legacy; a legacy of love and loyalty and admiration for these films. I can’t really judge the academy awards of this year cuz i had seen just 2 films of the 9 that were nominated (war horse and midnight in paris). So not having watched hugo, I can’t really confirm that HP should’ve won visual effects (and art direction too), yet I hardly believe that hugo’s effects could’ve been any better. I haven’t watched the iron lady either, but basing myself on the pics they showed, i can totally say that the make up oscar should’ve been for potter or, if not, for albert nobbs. Iron lady’s was good, but not NEARLY as great as potter’s! not to mention desplat’s snub (not for the nom, but for the oscar itself) and for serra, and for the soun dept. And here I’m just talking about DH2! How many oscars have the 8 hp films deserved and not gotten even a nomination! Imo, more than i can count.
But what has happened, has happened. Some may think that i’m a biased HP fan who thinks the only movie out there is hp. Well, I’m not. I love movies, and even though HP movies are my favorites, I know there are better movies out there; hell, I know there were better movies out there this year, and i love great films. Yet wanting HP to win has nothing to do with fandom; I was just demandin credit where credit was due. I knew it wouldnt be nominated for movie, or director, or acting (even though i loved those 3 aspects!). But for all the technical awards it did deserve, and i go back to the 1st movie, the academy should have recognised this series!
Yet the didn’t. And you know what? Thats ok. Because HP doesnt need a golden statue or a lame joke afterwards to be good. Its great on its own accord, and its legacy is greater than all of those movies combined! And the filmmakers know it! And we know it! And that’s what matters! This series will go down to history, among many other things, like the series that never won an oscar yet deserved lots of them! As the highest-grossing film franchise ever made! And as the most loved series (books and movies) ever made! Long Live HP!!

  • Emma

To me, it doesn’t matter that Harry Potter didn’t win an Oscar. So many people are united in their love for the movies, and the books, and that makes me so incredibly happy. Harry doesn’t need an Oscar to prove that.

  • starshipranger

I LOVE HARRY POTTER and they should have gotten some recognition for their awesomeness…

  • Jdkelley99

Out of all of the movies at lest one of them ( I think it should be more) should have won one Oscar

  • Dublio98

I think the deathly hallows deserves visual effects. Hugo had a few visual effects but harry potter had so much more. Hogwarts castle, battle scenes, everything was very well animated and looked very realistic. The age group is srupidbecause I have been watching them since I was 5 and my family watches too (range from 12-45) even my grandparents watch them! So, I think the people who vote for these things should actually watch the movies and evaluate all of the details put into the film. I would like to be a judge so everyone can be happy with the oscar winners and the films that deserve the oscars get them. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows part 2 deserved it!
