The Blair Partnership, J.K. Rowling’s new agency, has announced that the Harry Potter author is publishing a new book for adults.

The site reads:

We are pleased to announce That our client, J.K. Rowling, will be releasing a new novel for adults. Further details will be announced later in the year.

The Blair Partnership is a literary agency. We are in the business of taking care of authors, their talent, their careers and their success.

The book will be published by Little, Brown in the United States. A note from Rowling on the Blair Partnership website indicates:

Although I’ve enjoyed writing it just as much, my next novel will be very different from the Harry Potter series.

We will of course be covering any and all news about this new book as it develops over the next few months and years!

What do you think the book will be about?

UPDATE 1: Publisher’s Marketplace indicates Little, Brown won the rights to the book and a longer quote from Rowling is below…

“Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.”

UPDATE 2: I’ve written a column about the potential for midnight release parties – read it here. We’ve also posted a few new updates concerning Jo’s website along with Staff and Reader predictions concerning what the book will be about!

OH MY GOD!! This is the most exciting news to come out in a long time! I wonder how long it will be before it is actually released. GAH! I’m so excited!!!!!

    • Ali

My guess is it will be a while; Jo does tend to build up the hype, keep us guessing. And we wouldn’t have it any other way — single greatest day since 2007:) :)

  • Glaciusx

What happened to that political fairy tale she was writing?

  • http://www.twitter.com/vthenerd Vladan Vukmanov

    So excited for this!

  • KatnissLovegood

    YAY!

  • GoodFinder

    So excited about this!!

  • Han

I can’t wait! I hope it comes out sometime this year!

  • http://www.facebook.com/gabirobs Lucas Gabriel

finally! I’m very excited just to read something new from Jo. :)

  • Sarah

For a literary agency, doesn’t look good to have miscapitalized words in your website content.  That said, I’ll be interested to see what Jo produces.

    • http://www.facebook.com/skeekeedee Amber Murray

      What was miscapitalized?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alice-Fitzpatrick/616033260 Alice Fitzpatrick

I just looked at the website, ’cause I’m sad like that, and nothing was wrongly capitalised. (On that note – there is no such word as “miscapitalised”.)

The title of the page is “We are Pleased to Announce…” and then below they give the news, in this case starting with “That our client…” et cetera. So it’s not wrong to start the sentence with a capital letter, even if it doesn’t quite seem right.

    OH MY GOD
    HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN?
    LONG LIVE QUEEN ROWLING!

  • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I’m very interested, yet I hate adult books so much. Literally hate them. I wish she could still choose to write for children, but oh well. I know this will be good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.redwine Joshua Redwine

Wow, all adult books? As in 90-some % of the world’s literature? Or just contemporary adult literature? I can’t wrap my head around this concept of hating all adult books, especially given the unbelievably broad range of genres to choose from.

I, for one, am excited to see what world and characters are awaiting us in Rowling’s next book. I think the fact that Harry Potter was written for young adults really stunted Rowling’s writing style and I’m excited to see where she goes when writing for adult readers.

      • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

Not all, but definitely the most contemporary kind. Perhaps it’s just the  novels as read, as I couldn’t exactly finish any of them. I have read quite a few good adult novels, but the rest are just horrid. I know Jo’s new book will be brilliant though. :)

  • http://twitter.com/HP4eva121995 Ally

OH MY ROWLING!!! I literally screamed when I saw this!!!

    • Ekta

Me too. I mean who didn’t???

  • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

Am I the only one that feels like crying? Or do I just have serious issues/

    • Guest

Nope. I’m in tears right now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/thebabarsuhail Babar Suhail

Yes, you do have a serious issue.

    • http://www.thatwasdramatic.tumblr.com/ Anya

      No, I’m crying too.

    • http://twitter.com/PabloRV7 Pablo Ruiz V

Ignore Babar Suhail, I’m in tears right now. Rowling is back!

      • PotionWillow207

Except that, based on his other comments on this article, VideoKilledSeverusSnape is crying out of sadness instead of joy.

    • Victoria

Soon as I get out of class, the screams and tears will start, I’m sure.

      • Hermione A

        IKR!!!!!

        • Amber

same with me!! in journalism class trying not to freak out….breathe, breathe. haha

      • LilyLuna

I knew I missed school today for a reason. ;)

I would have found out in my computer class (I always check mugglenet then) and I’d have probably had looked like I was having a fit or something, in a class with no other Potterheads to understand.

  • http://twitter.com/yasthilmaharaj Yasthil Maharaj

I guess pen and paper were actually her priority for a reason.

  • ravenclaw1991

I’m excited! and part of me is kind of happy its not about HP, but a small part of me is sad that its not.. Its kind of hard to explain.

  • http://twitter.com/yasthilmaharaj Yasthil Maharaj

And its not even near April Fools.

  • Gotslytheryin

    LONG LIVE QUEEN ROWLING.

  • http://twitter.com/DigestMovies Page Lady

aaahhh! exciting, but sort of useless, announcement. we knew she was writing but didn’t know what. now we officially don’t know what it’s about.

  • http://twitter.com/jessoneal84 Jessica O’Neal

I keep staring at the headline convinced that it is going to change. This doesn’t seem real.

  • But I still LOVE her!

LOL HOW COULD SHE DITCH BLOOMSBURY. THEY PUBLISHED HER WHEN 5 BILLION OTHER AUTHORS TURNED HER DOWN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/skeekeedee Amber Murray

That comment makes no sense in oh so many ways

    • Gary65

The fact that you would say that just proves that you know nothing about business.

  • http://twitter.com/karrenola Karen M. Henton

Thank Merlin for that pen and paper being priority!! I’m just as excited as when I first picked up Philosopher’s Stone all those years ago. What a great time to be an adult! I hope it’s on iBooks.

  • Phoebe Glick

HAVE ALL THE NOSTALGIA! Now we wait for a title, publication date, any plot details, page count, etc etc. Do you guys think there will be a midnight release???!!!!

    • Victoria

I’m sure everyone will MAKE it a midnight release XD.  Even if the bookstores didn’t open for it, I’m sure we’d all line up anyways XD.  I would totally do that…

    • LGray1983

I missed all the HP midnight releases, so I will be at this one with bells on! Jo could single-handedly save our remaining bookstores from going out of business. I think this will be HUGE.

  • lookalivesteph

    OMG. THIS IS SO EXCITING!!

  • Guest

I am a little wary of an HP followup. Will it be like Stephanie Meyer’s “The Host” (which, in my opinion, was far greater than Twilight)? Or will it be a disaster like many of Charles Dicken’s books following his success with Nicholas Nickleby? That being said, I am extremely excited for this new book!

    • Victoria

I’m of the opinion that if SM can do it, Jo will be brilliant!!!

    • http://benchpressabear.tumblr.com Joan

I’m pretty certain it will be nothing like The Host.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alice-Fitzpatrick/616033260 Alice Fitzpatrick

Er. Stephanie Meyer is the worst thing to happen to literature since … No, there is no precedent. She is simply the worst thing to happen to literature. Look up “abstinence porn”, and you’ll get a description of her books. I read about six pages of “The Host” before its utterly terrible writing style made me physically need to get that book as far away from me as possible.

      • Mia

I found The Host to be a lot better than Twilight. So agreed, if Meyer can do it, so can Rowling. Although I don’t know why I just made that comparison.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=752203253 Kendra Baird

    YAYYY! I’m so excited!

  • Gary65

WE NEED DETAILS!!! I’m excited but I can’t get properly excited until I know what it’s about and why its an ADULT novel.

  • AilsaWeasley

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grace

I CAN’T BREATHE OR THINK OR TALK OR WRITE OR EVEN CRY I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!

  • Tsbhangu

Funny how all the Harry Potter fans are excited( I am one too) but this will be nothing close to the magical world of Harry Potter we love….So unless someone likes her writing style this book isn’t for the Harry Potter fans…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1381504748 Hibaq Farah

We’re just as much J.K Rowling fans as we are HP fans. That’s why we’re excited!

    • Victoria

      I love her writing style…

    • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

Lots of people like her writing style. It’s why I am excitign to read something by her that does not involve Potter. It will be interesting.

    • Trixie99

Well they could also like the way she develops her characters and plot and are hoping to see how she transfers these skills into another genre.  I think it will be quite interesting and I’m not expecting another Harry Potter or anything.  Harry Potter was great, but I would like to see something different from her.

      • BarkingSpiders

Thank you. You took the words right out of my mouth. I especially love her character development. =)

  • Phoebe Glick

We should all go out in the streets in robes and Potter garb and chatter excitedly amongst ourselves and the Muggles will have no idea what’s going on.

I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!  I AM SITTING IN CLASS AND HAVE TO STAY QUIET, BUT THERE ARE 14 MINUTES AND COUNTING TO MY EXTREME EXPLOSION!!! THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I feel you. I asked to go to the bathroom and freaked out in the handicap stall. :D

    • LilyLuna

Being sick at home is just as frustrating, trust me. All of my friends are at school, behaving like good children and not checking their phones. I am going to explode!

      • Victoria

Haha, I sat in class texting nearly everyone I knew to go to the Blair Partnership website ASAP (I’m in college so it’s a little different, I guess, though not something I normally do as it’s disrespectful) XD. I even texted my HS friends who I knew would be at school so that they would get it when they got out of school in the afternoon :).

  • James

This makes me happy, but why is everyone freaking out so much…? Did you think she was going to give up writing or something?

    • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

No. It was just unexpected to me that it’s a) it’s an adult book. b) I found out during the school day. c) It’s JK freaking Rowling!!!

    • LilyLuna

It’s JK Rowling, of *course* we’re excited! And all of those pen and paper tweets, they were so vague. This is the first time we’ve heard definite news of a new book from her in nearly 5 years!

  • Luka

     Well this is exciting :D

  • hugefanofJo’s

The only thing that I’m disappointed about is that it’s an adult book, and I’m not an adult! Lots of her fans are children!

    • GoodFinder

A lot of them are, but I think the ones of us that truly grew up with Harry are adults now.  I read the first book when I was 10 and I’m 23 now.

      • Victoria

        I was 8 and now I’m 19 ^_^

      • LilyLuna

Exactly. Yes, there are some children who are Potterheads, but they’re not the ones who remember the anticipation with the series, this won’t have the same nostalgic value to them. That said, I’m only (almost) 16 and I’ve got no problem reading adult novels. I’m absolutely thrilled that she’s branching out. I’m curious to read anything new she’s willing to throw at us.

      • GoodFinder

Plus, I don’t think DH or even HBP can really be called children’s books.

      • Hermione A

Those of us who truly grew up with Harry Potter don’t have to be adults to have grown up with it ya know….. That was kinda rude…..

    • http://benchpressabear.tumblr.com Joan

There’ll be more book to come.

I don’t think she’s writing to satisfy ANY specific audience. She doesn’t have to. She has to write different things. All authors do.

    • Trixie99

Just because she has a lot of child fans doesn’t mean she has to write every one of her books catered to children.  She also has a lot of adult fans.  Many of whom grew up with the series.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alice-Fitzpatrick/616033260 Alice Fitzpatrick

Yup. Her first loyal fans, who were schoolchildren as she was writing the HP books, are in their twenties now. Like me :)

  • http://hypable.com Selina

And it’s my BIRTHDAY today! Jo loves me ;)

    • Laura Jones

       Happy birthday! xox

    • Emmalou

wow what a great present! lol happy birthday! :)

    • Jason

      I envy you.

  • http://dervish-banges.tumblr.com Tariq

The website is updated with a mailing list! And it’s getting redesigned. I’m so excited.

  • Alonninos

AAAAAAAHH!! I can’t wait to get more details!

  • thisnewsisinsane

OMG words cannot describe how I am feeling right now

  • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

Can they PLEASE SHARE WHY the book is a “adult” book. I’m a teenager and hate adult/young adult books more than anything in the world. But I know this will be amazing; I just want the suspense to be over and know the juicy details!

    • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

Ok, we get it. You hate adult books. Next.

      • http://myselfandpotter.blogspot.com/ VideoKilledSeverusSnape

Uhm, I’m just excited. You don’t have to be rude.

        • Katie

she actually does have to be rude because you’re pretty freakin’ annoying and laughably ignorant.

          • Adeline

Why are people so inconsiderate on a FAN SITE? On a fan site people are suppose to express their opinion. No one has any right to speak like that. Ruin someone’s “dream” of becoming a writer. What kind of people are you?

As for JK Rowling’s new novel, I’m excited, of course. I have some ideas what is could possibly be about, but I guess we’ll have to see. I’m glad Jo is writing something outside of Potter. Good for her.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alice-Fitzpatrick/616033260 Alice Fitzpatrick

they weren’t trying to ruin his/her dream of being a writer, they were just telling him/her how stupid it is to dismiss adult books entirely. but i do agree they were a bit mean.

          • gleeky-potterhead

            You are so right!
Siriusly, if we are all HP fans here and we argue, doesn’t that go against all that Jo has written about?

    • Katie

You are an aspiring writer and you hate about 95% of all books. Okay….

    • Thanks a lot

Some role model you are. “Yes I hate adult books more than anything in the world.” thanks for the positive attitude….

      • Victoria

He/She can have an opinion and share it, and it doesn’t always have to be a good opinion.  People can dislike things, and people can really really REALLY dislike things.  I pretty much hate all classics that I’ve attempted to read so far (besides Shakespeare), but does that make me a negative or ignorant person?  He/She does not like that genre.  Let them have their opinions.

        • Thanks a lot

It’s different though, adult books is a HUGE category with a wide variety of thousands of different books. Being that narrow minded on such a big topic is not good.

  • http://twitter.com/NiallJAdams Niall Adams

Oh. My. Rowling. Didn’t check Twitter or any news sites all day and get home to find this! I can’t describe how excited I am right now. Can’t wait!

  • Mia

I’m really surprised she isn’t using a pseudonym. I thought at one point she considered it… Or maybe she already has :P

either way, i’m super excited and I know for sure, I’ll buy it. Although I don’t think anything could be as magical as Harry Potter.

  • Rocktwomusic

This is awesome because it means that all her fans that literally grew up with Harry and are now will get to continue to grow with the Brilliant writings of JKR. Do you think she’ll publish under JKRowling or Jo or what? I hope she goes with Jo.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=646371872 Elizabeth Lee Hammons

I don’t get why people are upset by the fact it’s an adult book. Look at the last 3  Harry Potter books. Not exactly for children.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ebooboo1 Erica Gipson

I love that its an adult book. All of us that have grown up with the Harry Potter series and fell in love with Jo’s writing are pretty much adults now. As much as I love Harry Potter and will always be a massive fan, it is over, and now its time for the next step. Its time to fall in love with something new!

    • http://Www.hypable.com/ Harry Potter

All the adults who read it were reading a children’s book

  • Alexis

    ?!?!?! Hooray!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001458753554 Dylan Fox

I hope it’s fantasy/magic-based! Jo writes fantasy so well. I can’t imagine her doing anything else! I hope she keeps in mind that her preexisting fanbase is already a fan of her fantasy work and will not do anything too unexpected.

    • PotionWillow207

No offense, but the whole “I can’t imagine her doing anything else” idea is what kills authors’ reputations. They make an attempt to do something different, and people reject it for no other reason than it’s not what they are used to seeing from that author. Don’t get mad at me, but be careful about that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joey-Mangum/1820064015 Joey Mangum

    SO. EXCITED! :D

    So excited, and soo nervous!

  • bwaygirl13

So THIS is what all of those white owls were about… I see now.

  • Mrs_Badcrumble

So excited with this news because I’m really curious about Jo’s next literary adventure.

But I really hope people don’t judge this book simply from a Potter fan point of view, because it is sounding like something completely different, and it wouldn’t be fair for J.K. Rowling as a writer.

  • Ilikecheesegirl

YES THANK YOU WORLD *DIES* *COMES BACK TO LIFE TO READ BOOK*
I just REALLY hope it won’t be political

  • Pennytime101

There really should not be a midnight release! We don’t even know if the book will be any good (although it probably will be)! Its not right to judge the book just because the author is famous. I am looking forward to reading it thought :)

    • Victoria

I feel that it’s perfectly alright to judge a book because its author is one that we know and dearly love.  She is personally my absolute favorite author, and I am excited to read anything she writes.  As I think that she is a fantastic author, how can I not believe that the new books she writes will be wonderful as well??  It’s kind of a common thing to read several works by an author you like, isn’t it??  That’s what my mom, librarians, and pretty much everyone I know always told me: find an author you like.  Well I have, and I plan on devouring every single word she ever publishes, as soon as I can (which will be midnight of whatever day it’s released if I have my way!!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/iDomi Domi Ed

I can’t type a wall o text like I really want to because everyone already said my feelings.

Can’t wait to see what magic she comes up with this time! I love how she is doing an adult book now. Almost as if she is writing for all the fans who have grown up with Harry Potter and now that its over want something new to sink their teeth into.

  • Kaitlin L

I’m excited but why did it have to be an adults book???

  • http://www.youtube.com/fravit Fravit

Hope it’s a crime/mystery novel. That’s essentially what all the HP novels are, mysteries, they just happen to exist against the backdrop of a magical world. Would like to see a full on mystery novel with intrigue and murder and crazy twists.

    • LGray1983

      That would be amazing.

    • Kaitlin L

omg, just given me hope!!! i hope it is not too adultish, i am only 14

  • Alyss

Maybe this is why there was all of those snowy owls gathering in Kansas (I think)  a couple of weeks ago.

    It would explain a lot.

I’m making high-pitched excited noises. I can’t even talk to tell my parents right now.

  • LotusCalm

Needless to say… I freaked out. A lot. A very, very large amount of lot.

  • Alex654

of course she will write for adults. 85% of children who read harry potter and now adults. Look at mugglecast they were teenagers when they started it and now they are in their mid 20′s.

  • Nargles

Personally, I’m hoping for some sort of Vernon cameo like a newspaper article called “Little Whinging man dies of heart attack after hamburger eating contest”

  • http://twitter.com/cynthiacaridad Cynthia Caridad

    SHE’S BACK!!!!!

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Harry Potter

      No shit, sherlock

      • gleeky-potterhead

Well, that was very nice Mr. so-called Potter…

  • LGray1983

OMG, YES! Just heard this on Jimmy Fallon, and my heart is still racing. I don’t care what it is; I know it’s going to be great. It’s funny, just the other day I was feeling sad about the Harry Potter movies being over…and now I have something new to look forward to! I just adore Jo!

  • Whiggy

Sucks to anyone going to release some big news today — JK Rowling just out-classed you :)

  • Whiggy

2012 just got a LOT better. First the title-of-the-book day, then release-date-for-the-book day, then the actual release *squee*!

  • Lauren

OMG!!!!!! i feel like iv been waiting for this all my life…

  • http://twitter.com/JoeRayes Joseph Rayes

She tweeted again :)  J K Rowling @jk_rowling As you may have heard, I have a new book out later this year. Very different to Harry, although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much.
The Mayans were right! 2012 marks the end of an old cycle and the beginning of a new one :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VCJSDSEDKYOBEKWGIXCDB2QPYA Henry

WOW J K Rowling, gets comments going!! I haven’t seen so much comments on an Artical in a long time!! She is Queen!

  • I love cheese

I don’t even care what this book is going to be about, anything written by her is going to be gold.

  • Vajackster

God, yes. J.K. Rowling, without all the candy-*ss sh*t.

  • Gil Camporazo

I’ve the hunch that this JK Rowling’s novel is a hit in the making. I’m following this up. I’m too excited to read this.

  • Santiarof

Ok I’m completely surprised… AND EXCITED! This literally came out of the blue for me! I cant wait to see what new things jo writes! As an above poster mentioned, i’m not expecting another hp. I know she’s a very skilled writer and I like her writing style, so let’s see how she does in another genre (my guess goes for a thriller or a crime novel)!! I think she’ll be brilliant!! OMG OMG! long live queen rowling!!

  • http://twitter.com/mwdickens2013 Mary Warren Dickens

This is perfect timing. We don’t have a new movie or a theme park opening/expansion this year, so we needed something. This is it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JKDKYBXUGFK6UITCPM2BHLOM44 Liz Lemon

    Yay!!

  • starshipranger

FINALLY!!! MAYBE WITH A NEW BOOK EVERYONE WILL FORGET POTTERMESS…I MEAN MORE

  • Moli715

Just as much as I am a Harry Potter fan, I am a JK Rowling fan. She’s one of my favorite authors, if not my favorite author. I’m going to buy her next book as soon as it’s released! I didn’t know she has a Twitter acount, though.

  • Jenna Christy Matalam
