Speaking at Sundance recently, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke said that the original script for the film (prior to her rewrite) was ‘horrible,’ and she had told Summit she’d only take on the film if she could rewrite it herself.

From NY Mag:

“I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the Internet and I thought, Okay, it’s based on a book and people tend to like it. There’s gotta be something there. So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love. And I thought, That’s kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy … ” She went to Summit with images of how she thought the movie should look and said she’d only sign on if she could do a complete rewrite. They agreed.

We’re glad Hardwicke took matters in to her own hands. Ultimately, her version of Twilight was loyal to the book and kick off a huge worldwide franchise.

She must’ve been sent a copy of the book and thought it was the script. Zing!

I’m not here to bash on Twilight because really, we’re all fans of something. Just respect. But I gotta say, the script that was filmed is not good! I’m a screenwriter student and I read it out of curiosity. It has formatting mistakes, weak structure…

    She did an amazing job!

And the script still wasn’t even that good!  I mean, obviously it was better than the original.  But I don’t like what Twilight did, finding all unknowns to write/star/direct.  Look at Hunger Games. Everyone in that film is already SOMEBODY, they have experience and knowledge and the film will be better because of it.

The director and about 1/3 of the actors were not “unkown”.  What are you talking about?

Rob, Kristen and Taylor all had big films before Twilight, as did some of the minor actors too – Billy Burke, anyone? Catherine Hardwicke had made a bunch of popular indie films at that point, and Melissa Rosenberg had written for shows like Dr Quinn, The OC and Dexter for years! They might have appeared unknown compared to the Hunger Games crowd, but they definitely weren’t unknowns in the industry by any means.

    We sympathize with you, Catherine.

Well, the final script was horrible too, so the first one must have been extremely terrible.
