Great news today for fans of John Green (don’t forget to be awesome, by the way): His just-released book The Fault In Our Stars has been optioned by Fox!

This means you could soon see a film version in the works.

Publisher’s Weekly reports:

After switching his representation in Hollywood, author John Green has closed a deal with Fox 2000 for his new YA novel, The Fault In Our Stars. The deal comes shortly after Green moved from William Morris Endeavor to United Talent Agency for his film representation. It also comes on the heels of the much-hyped publication of his new book, which Green promoted, over the summer, by announcing he would sign every first edition in the hefty 150,000-copy initial printing from Dutton.

If you’ve read the book: Can you see it becoming a well done book-to-film adaptation?

I’d definitely watch it, and I’d definitely cry. But he hasn’t had much luck in the past with his books being made into films. Though he’s also much more successful now, so maybe studios will be more willing.

The book is incredible, and I could definitely see it as a film. I think it may come off as a sappy cancer movie though, if we can’t hear what Hazel is thinking..

    • Tucker.

Well I mean we could hear what Hazel is thinking, like In Twilight where Bella is narrating. Not comparing Twilight to Fault in our Stars but kinda like that..

I don’t know if there are any actors that could pull it off really.

    • Misswriter18

      Totally agree with you!

    • Lilyskywalker

I know one actor who can pull off Peter Van Houten perfectly. That’s Hugh Laurie

      • http://twitter.com/CatKoski Cat Koski

Just because Hugh Laurie’s House is similar in disposition to Van Houten does not mean he’d be perfect for the role.  I LOVE Hugh Laurie but don’t see him pulling off Van Houten. Sorry.

        • Atticus

I would choose Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Even though he isn’t old enough. I think he would be amazing!

I’m really hoping this NEVER is made into a movie. This book is so special to so many people and I don’t want my image that is so clear and wonderful destroyed.
As a sidenote, something fans need to keep in mind is that the odds of this actually becoming a film are so small you may as well ignore the news. Just because the rights were acquired, it doesn’t mean a thing at this point.

    • Misswriter18

      I feel the same way.

Knowing that this is the book that he meant to write years ago, but was unable to, I feel like it shouldn’t be made into a film. But, I think it’d be the one with the best chances of being made, unfortunately. (I’d love for Paper Towns to be made…it is so quirky.)

    • Lonks

I agree. I feel like TFiOS is sacred almost. A movie would ruin its magic.

The existence of broccoli does not, in any way, affect the taste of chocolate, therefore: The Fault In Our Stars being turned into a movie won’t affect the brilliance of it’s original form. Well, unless you allow it to.

    • crystalangela

      I agree. no movie please.

  • Leigh

The film rights for all of his other books have been sold too, but they’re never actually made a movie for any of them so I won’t get my hopes up.

I feel as though this is his book that would do best as a film.  All the other rights have been sold, but this novel has the cohesiveness needed for a film.  Not to say that other novels are bad, though, because I shouted for joy when my librarian had “Paper Towns” on display.  I’d be willing to audition for Hazel for the heck of it!

    not sure if want…

I just finished the book over the weekend. SO GOOD. If it’s ever made, I hope they do it justice, it could be really amazing.

No. That’s a terrible idea. Just. No. I hope nothing happens with this.

  • Kat

It is rather interesting that the rights have been sold given that John said in a recent Hankgames video how he doesn’t want to be made into a movie. I feel like it is very unlikely this will be made into a movie regarless that the other books haven’t. Also I don’t wish it to be made into a movie either just since I feel it doesn’t need to be done, that being said if they were ever to I’d be the first in line to by a ticket every person I knew and myself.

Don’t Forget that Hankgames does not upload in realtime, everything is backlogged/queued !

Didn’t they say something like this about Looking for Alaska? I don’t think it’s going to happen tbqh.

  • Patricious

There isn’t anything I’m keen to see literally re TFIOS.
… I think that’s the correct usage of ‘literally’.

  • Alyssa

This is the only book that I’ve cried while reading that I can remember (I’ve teared up, but not even Harry Potter made me full-on cry) and if the movie is half as good then it will be amazing. Maybe Hazel will do a sort of voice-over in the movie? Although, that could turn out really badly. I don’t know.

  • sfina

I desperately want this book to be made into a movie as long as it’s done right. This book was very powerful and it took me so long to get through the last couple of chapters because I could literally get through three pages before becoming a pathetic weeping mess and having to take a break to calm myself down. If the movie is put in the right hands I could see it being an incredible film. As for who I think should play the roles I really don’t know about Hazel, maybe that girl who plays Violet in American Horror Story? But I am very passionate about who I think should play Gus- there is an actor who is fairly new to the hollywood scene named Grant Gustin and he fits the description of Augustus to a T. He’s best known for his role in Glee but he’s done some other things I think. He’s perfect for that role and if they make it into a movie I will not be happy with anyone else taking it on.

    • Atticus 63

For the role of Hazel Grace if it is indeed made into a movie, I could see Chole Grace Moretz~ How funny I had to look up her name and her middle name is already Grace! Weird!

      .

      • atticus63

She was the girl in Hugo.

  • Tayler

i don’t want it to be ruined as most you say either. BUT. however, i do want to see the hollywood faces for everyone. i was to see how beautiful augustus & hazel are. i was to see how big isaac’s eyes are to be. i want to see them fall in love. but as i wished this for twilight, my vision was destroyed…. <3

    • Tayler

& they also need to make as EXACTLY like the book, nothing new & no missing pieces.

  • Vicky

As long as Looking for Alaska is never made into a film, I’ll be okay.

  • A person

it would be dificult to creat a film thats anything as good as the book

  • GusHazel4ever

NO MOVIE. I’m so sad — it’s quite ironic since Green himself created the characters that wanted An Imperial Perfection’s characters to live on. And I want Gus and Hazel Grace to live on in my mind and heart — not portrayed by some Hollywood folk. Don’t we all love Holden in our own way because Salinger never sold out? Just saying.

  • Louise

Taissa Farmiga would be ideal for Hazel, should this film go ahead.

  • Fiehfiwuefh

John Green, don’t be a prostitute.

  • groovyperson

I think the book is so amazing, and i wouldnt want the magic to be ruined but i still think that a film would be so awesome! I really hope it is made in to a movie, and even if the movie isnt that good it wont be able to squash the beautiful amazingness of the book.

  • Clairem-ox

Personally I think that with ‘The fault in our stars’ there is a potential for Hollywood  to turn it into another corny movie which has been done a million times before, I think the book is far too much of a masterpiece to be turned into a movie, movies never do the book justice and with a book as exceptional as this the film would have to be pretty damn amazing in order to compare with the book in any way.
