JK Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter books, and if her name is said to anyone in the world they could probably remember a time where they’ve heard it and what it is associated with. JK Rowling. It rolls off the tongue and is easy to say and everyone knows it. But bigger fans of Harry Potter know that her full name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling.
When trying to get the first Harry Potter book published her publishing company Bloomsbury suggested putting her first two initials and her last name on the book because boys wouldn’t likely pick up a book written by a female author. Rowling didn’t have a middle name, so she took her grandmothers name Kathleen and so created the name we all know. But Harry Potter is now over, the books written and all of the films released. She is so well known as being the writer of Harry Potter, is there really a need to continue going by JK Rowling? People would still recognize the last name Rowling even if they didn’t quite put together that the names Joanne Rowling and JK Rowling are the same person.
Rowling is still writing – we know this by reviewing her Twitter page which repeatedly says that pen and paper are her priority right now. Fans of Harry Potter are waiting for the day she finishes writing something new so we can run to the nearest book store and devour ever word. But will she continue to go by JK Rowling or switch it up and go by Joanne Rowling, a name that would have likely been printed on the front of Harry Potter books had the publishing company not suggested it? Would she change it if she moved away from the children’s genre or would it be safe to say she shouldn’t change a thing because everyone recognizes her name as JK Rowling?
What do you think about this? Should she change her name or keep it the way it has been printed on so many covers of the books she will forever be known for writing?
