I’ve seen reviews online that say Grimm is boring and repetitive (such as this one on io9). I can’t fully disagree with those criticisms, but I do know why I keep watching Grimm despite its less-than-stellar episodes: Potential.

The basic premise of Grimm is this: every descendant from the Grimm family inherits the ability to see supernatural creatures and is destined to kill them.

Sound familiar? It’s a different take on Buffy (which is not surprising since Grimm’s producers worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Buffy started off with a simple concept (“Into each generation a Slayer is born”) and grew into its own mythology. It was ground-breaking television, and years later, fans still love the series.

I see that potential in Grimm too.

True, the plots have been predictable and we don’t learn much about the characters week to week. But I see glimpses of the bigger picture, of the Grimm world beyond Nick’s and Hank’s investigations:

- Monroe’s relationships to other creatures
- the journal about past Grimms
- the Grimm Reapers

We’ve got these story elements on the fringes of the show. I’m waiting for the writers to pull these bits to the central story. For now I’m having fun watching old fairy tales in modern settings.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. This show has deeper plots to open, but it seems timid to just jump right into it. Hopefully they make something happen soon, because NBC is good for pulling the plug on good shows.

My problem with the show is that there are 250 Grimm fairytales yet they choose to base episodes on novels and stories far outside the Grimm world.

I never made it past the pilot, which was cringe-worthily filled to the brim with every genre cliche imaginable. That and it felt like it was trying to be Supernatural, only less awesome. I already watch Supernatural (and Fringe for my genre TV fix) at that time, so haven’t felt the need to tune back in.

Yeah, the Friday 9 p.m. slot is rough. I watch Fringe on TV and then watch Grimm on Hulu the next day.

I really like the show so far. I got hooked around “Danse Macabre” and thought the most recent episode “Of Mouse and Man” was some beautiful writing as well. The procedural “creature of the week” gimmick is enough to keep me satisfied for now, because character development and larger arcs ARE happening: the mystery of Captain Renard, creatures finding out who Nick is and staking out his house, Monroe and Nick’s developing friendship, and the consequences of Monroe’s decision to buck the threats of his own kind and help Nick anyway. I don’t find it boring and repetitive—I’m savoring the first season because I’d rather the writers plan things out carefully than move ridiculously fast/not allow things to develop properly.

Great review! The actors keep promising that we will learn more about the character’s history and I think once that happens the show will get much better. It’s hard for people to fall in love with characters they know very little about. However, I still love the show and like you said it has great potential. I think NBC wasn’t really expecting it to do as well so hopefully they develop it much further than what we’ve seen so far this season.

I wish they could move the show to 8PM or 10PM on Friday, rather than 9PM. With Chuck ending in a few weeks, whatever show replaces it could either doom Grimm or boost Grimm… or do absolutely nothing. I think they should try one Friday night after Chuck ends to test the 8PM time slot. I also think they could promote the show during the Superbowl and The Voice/Smash. Different audience, I know, but it wouldn’t be bad to have many people check the show out.
