Deadline has learned that NBC, Rainn Wilson, and show exec producer Paul Lieberstein are actively working on a spin off of The Office!

It centers around one of the best characters on the show, Dwight Schrute.

From Deadline’s report:

I hear that NBC is working on an Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for a potential midseason 2013 launch. No deals have been closed yet but I’ve learned that the proposed spinoff is a family comedy, which was the brainchild of Wilson and The Office executive producer/showrunner Paul Lieberstein. It will have Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast, which have been featured on the show several times, including in an episode where Jim and Pam visited Dwight there. The potential spinoff will be introduced in an Office episode later this season set at Schrute Farms. “Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight’s life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B,” a source close to The Office said. “A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it’s been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors.

This sounds like a pretty entertaining idea to us, and we’re excited to see Schrute’s family. Will you check it out? Could it be a way to end the ailing Office?

On Monday our own Selina wrote a column on the fact that The Office is losing its shine.

Ehh. Not sure what this means for the future of The Office. I do love Dwight’s character though. Maybe if they do this, they can still include episodes where the office regulars appear. That would be the only way I would be okay with this. Because as of right now, without Michael, Dwight IS The Office.

As a huge Office fan, color me skeptical!

Last time a spinoff was rumored, we got Parks and Recreation. A great show, but it took some of the greatest minds working on The Office with it. I hope that doesn’t happen again, unless this means “The Office” is going to end. I can’t picture an Office without Michael AND Dwight.

    • Hi

and apparently Jim may not be back next season either… then I will have no reason to ever watch this show ever again.

      • Andrew

It’s true. None of the main cast members are signed on for next season. Not yet anyway. Probably going year-by-year being such an aged program.

Worst idea ever….just put The Office to rest for Christ’s sake. I would MUCH rather them renew Community instead of going forward with this.

You crazy?  Dwight’s always been the best secondary character.  Michael was the only reason that show was funny and him and Dwight were the best pair.  Andy and everyone else is why this show has gone to crap.

You nailed it…Dwight is a good SECONDARY character. He is way too cartoonish to be able to carry a series on his own

        • Anonymous

          Michael Scott wasn’t cartoonish?

Oooooh now the sass starts to come out!

Listen, I’m not going to start some juvenile war of words with you. I personally think this is a terrible idea (and judging from comments seen on this and other sites I am not in the minority here).
If you think that it’ll be good, by all means watch it.

            The sass?

Your previous post “You nailed it…Dwight is a good SECONDARY character.”

I’d say you have the ‘sass’ problem.

I’m sure Hypable is a great sample group of what shows would be a success on TV lol.

I’m not saying Hey Dwight! would be a great show, I’m just pointing out he was a large part of the series’ success when Michael was with the show.  You’re selling him a bit short.

Bones, Criminal Minds, how many shows are going to do spin-offs before they realize that SPIN-OFFS DON’T WORK. Yes its worked for CSI and Grey’s Anatomy once(which is only holding on by its teeth) but one swallow doesn’t make a summer.

The only good thing about this news is that it might mean that The Office is on its way out. The show needs to end soon before it becomes worse.

  • Hermione

Um… NO! I love love love The Office and Dwight and Mose is one of the most spectacular characters ever but please, I don’t like spinoffs and people trying to milk characters for more than they’re worth. I want it to get better, then go out with a bang and have 8 beautiful seasons to remember it by.

Sigh. You’d think NBC would have learned their lesson with “Joey”…

    • Josh

Joey was a good show. Not nearly as good as Friends, but it is was still pretty good.

First of all this says to me that The Office might be ending this year, and they’re trying to continue the franchise with Dwight.

Second, LOL that this was announced one day after my random The Office column…

I think they should end The Office this year with like a hour long finale and perhaps do a one off episode with Dwight on during the holiday season would be nice.

Even if they did an hour long episode, we’d get 12 minutes of show and 48 minutes of commercials.  I swear there is most time spent on commercials on the Office than the actual show.

Man everyone hatin on The Office I think it is a great show and it fits my sense of humor… To put it nicely I think The Office is going through an awkward time, like when a drastic change happens in your life and you don’t want to talk about it… My personal opinion is to get Robert California off the show and get Jim Carrey or even Will Ferrel or Adam Sandler. I love the rest of the cast and think that the show would be a 10 if Robert left.

Keep the Office. It’s seriously the best show ever and makes me into a fantastic mood every time I watch it. Might I add it’s a million times better than the Office UK. :D
