The show may be enjoying higher ratings than ever, but Sherlock show-runner Steven Moffat has hinted that he would like the series to stop for several years, before making a return.

While series three is definitely coming in the next two or three years (after all, it was commissioned alongside series two back in 2010), it could be the last we see of Sherlock and John for a long time to come. As reported by Crave Online, Moffat told journalists that he thought it would be interesting to see the duo return in their 40s and 50s, as late as 2030.

“I fondly imagine it’d be nice to stop it for a while and come back and see what they’re like in their 40s or 50s. Because normally these two characters are portrayed in their 50s. So we’re actually at the beginning. It might be interesting in a couple of decades when they come back and [we] see what they’re like. These are still the formative years of Sherlock Holmes, the most important thing about this series is not that it’s updated. It’s the fact that those two men are still young and they’re still at the beginning of what they don’t know is going to be a lifelong relationship.”

What do you think of the news? Do you think that a lengthy hiatus an interesting way of telling the stories of the detective? Or do you think the show would benefit from continuing on a semi-annual basis? We would love to know what you think!

If this is seriously happening … I will go insane. How could Moffat do this to us?!

    • inkandstardust

Because he’s Moffat.  It’s that simple.

  • Kate

He can’t be serious. Please let this be some attempt to just mess with the entire fandom…

Oh and it is very possible that series 3 actually comes out later this year. I’ve seen some articles about it. Here’s the latest one I’ve found:

    mean.

Please let this be Moffat trolling again. He loves trolling the entire fandom. He’s Moffat….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=605784922 Kristen Wilhoit

Yeah I don’t believe it. I think Moffat is just trying to freak out all of us Sherlockians.

    • http://twitter.com/ambersorensen ambersorensen

This had better be Moffat trolling.  They’ve all said they don’t want to stop, they love doing it too much to stop.  But Moffat is the biggest troll ever, I wouldn’t put it past him.  But I’m pretty sure people would hunt him down and take him out if he did anything like this.

  • goldensnidget

You know what? As long as they don’t end series 3 on a cliffhanger, I’d be ok with that. It’s fantastic, but I don’t want them to drag it out too much, because that could be detrimental to the high quality of the show.

    • Jen

      This ^^

I know Moffat loves to wind us up but you can have too much of a good thing. I wouldn’t like quality to be sacrificed for quantity, as long as Series 3 is fantastic.

  • http://twitter.com/PabloRV7 Pablo Ruiz V

So this is what the mayans were warning us about

  • Emzalane

    Absolutely not!
And this isn’t me just going “RAWR WANT MORE SHERLOCK.” I think that the brilliance of this series is that they ARE so young, and in their formative years… we get to see them as we’ve never seen them before. I think it would totally remove a lot of it’s power, not to mention it’s SELLING power.

  • Sunflowa

I really enjoy Sherlock, but if they chose to put it on hold for a long time, I’d just lose interest, to be honest. They should take advantage of the fact that it’s hot right now & people are interested…

  • notenoughpuff

Stuff like this makes want to pull my hair out.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/SirDorkusProductions Dillon

I can actually imagine Sherlock releasing 3 episodes a year until 2030 and beyond.

  • http://twitter.com/BmVc1 Brandon

There is plenty of source material. No need to end the show for 20 years. They can keep it running that whole time. It should be the new Doctor Who.

  • Anonymous

Moffat loves to make the fans angry. I agree that we are at thew beginning of something that is going to go for over 20 more years of the character’s lives, but so what? Why skip all the middle years? At 3 90 min episodes very year or so I think th writers and the actors could keep going no problem.

  • Alohomora

Of COURSE it would be interesting!
    ..Wait, 2030?! WHAT?!

  • http://twitter.com/Andrew_ww Andrew W

I think thats a stupid idea.

  • Lucy

This can’t happen and there’s no need for it to with only three episodes in each season. And how does Moffat even know the actors would want to come back then. They could all be dead or something by then

    • Kate

Those three episodes are 90 minutes each. A movie. In total, if they split them into six 45 minute episodes it’d have just about as many episodes of other British shows (maybe a few less).

I don’t even watch Sherlock, but man this is SO like Moffat.

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

He should be realistic. As amazing as it must be to be part of the team that bring this show together, and as much as he must love it, and as BRILLIANT a show as it is, in twenty years he probably won’t give a crap. He’ll be on to bigger and better things, or else he’ll be bored of this job, or something will happen that will render it a waste of his time. If they are to end the show after Season 3 fro any reason, it shoul be that they are simply done. Otherwise I think it’s a bad idea. And frankly the prospect of waiting for something to happen for one, two decades, especially new Sherlock, is daunting. That might sound selfish, but this show is THAT good.

  • Benvolio

    Does Moffat need retirement money?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/MPBWALG3ARR6MPQV5QUXHPNUUI Jennifer

Moffat why? you such a troll! All the reichenbach feels are still killing us.

  • alexmochi

    NO MOFFAT NO

THE FANDOM WILL EITHER DIE OR ATTACK
    seriously
    we’ll die
    please don’t

  • lestrudel

all of your fans would be dead by then

  • TianiP

    What? No. No! NO!

  • Katelyn

Right, because just because Moffat thinks something is interesting that automatically means it’s going to happen to the show.

  • BlueBronze

Actually, I would really love to see how the relationship has developed twenty years from now. That being said, I don’t want to wait twenty years for Series 3. That would absolutely kill me.

  • Bethhopkins03

Guys this has just been taken out of context. He said this in one of the behind the scenes episodes. It’s not a formal announcement, just something toooootally out of context and blown up. Relax!

  • Whiggy

Yes, it must incredibly taxing to have to write one episode of three per season. That might be a bit harsh, but pushing this back AND Doctor Who… his new series better be god-like.

  • Kate Moriarty

I still love you, Trollfat, no matter what <3

  • Estora

MOFFAT STOP TROLLING US I CAN’T TAKE IT. *sob*

    Need…more…Sherlock…now…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Taylor-Elizabeth/546339640 Taylor Elizabeth

If you want to see what they’d be like in their late 40s and 50s, slap some make up on, and write a script them seem older, don’t take the show on a twenty year hiatus. Moffat could be dead by then and we’ll never get Sherlock again.

  • Guest

I never paid any attention to the original stories before i started watching the series a couple weeks ago (and now i’ve finished all the episodes :(  ]] Now i can’t get enough of them!
