If you watched Saturday Night Live a couple days ago, you may’ve been put off by that night’s musical performance Lana Del Rey. She became known thanks to her two-song EP, but viewers were vocal about her stage presence and singing abilities.

Now, host Dan Radcliffe is commenting on the controversy.

Reports TMZ:

Radcliffe was at the Bafta nominations … when he was asked about Lana Del Rey — who’s been TRASHED by music critics and people with ears alike who suffered through her baffling performance on the show.

Radcliffe responded, “It was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly.”

He added, “I also think people are making it about things other than the performance. If you read what people are saying about her online, it’s all about her past and her family and stuff that’s nobody else’s business.”

Always a gentlemen, Radcliffe is! Do you think Lana Del Rey was a bad choice for the show? You can rewatch one of her performances below.

This is the first ive heard of the stuff about her family and past but I watched SNL that night and i was very put off by the performance. She can definitely sing it was her song and her presence that was really off putting. I didn’t like the songs she sang but also she seemed very stuck up and didn’t even smile at the end of her performance.
I went back afterwards and listened to her songs (studio versions) on youtube and i liked them, so don’t be so quick to dismiss her music just on the basis of what you heard on SNL. :)

I have been absolutely in love with “Video Games” for a while, so when I heard she was going to be the musical guest on Daniel’s show, I was excited. But, after I heard her live version on SNL, I really was dissapointed. It just seemed weird…

  • Ilikecheesegirl

That’s Dan, always being nice! :)

  • Hermione

It’s not horrible… I think if you listen to the recorded version it definitely sounds like there’s been some studio corrections on the really low parts. I mean I’m really into this music type, it’s a little bizarre because I can’t find a specific thing in the performance to criticize but it does sound a little weird.

  • WrittenByArose

I wish people would cut her some slack I bet she was super nervous and it affected her performance! It must have been strange, her first us tv debut and she’s singing on the number one show in america! poor kid was probably scared stiff!!

  • Jamie

You spelled her name wrong. It’s Lana Del REY.

  • Anonymous

I had never heard of her before I saw her on SNL. I thought her singing was horrible, as well as the songs. So I still have no clue who she is, but I don’t think everyone’s opinions on her singing had to do with her past as much as it had to do with her actual performance. Just my opinion!

    • http://jimmypautz.com Jimmy Pautz

I was thinking the same thing.  It was awful.

  • Katelyn

It’s that she’s not enunciating.  You can’t tell what she’s saying/singing.  She’s also using registers that are too high and too low – it’s a really really bad falsetto, super nasally.  She’s got absolutely no breath support, making all of her notes drop off or her tone to go SUPER flat. She sounds really good when she’s using enough air and singing notes in her middle range.

    • Katelyn

And I just watched one of her music videos – the different totally is breath support and enunciation.  Either that or loads of manipulation in the studio.  It’s hard for me to tell.

    • Emmsolo

Just for the record, women don’t have a falsetto – the higher range is called the head voice. The term falsetto is reserved for men.

      • Katelyn

HEAD VOICE! BAH.  I knew that…at one point. :)  Thanks. :)

  • Jen

She sounds like a drunk person with a cold… Still, kind words from Dan Radcliffe!

  • ravenclawprefect

Not her best performance, but still, she’s awesome and a lot more talented and beautiful than many young ‘singers’ out ther

  • Becca

Haha! I thought that was just how she was supposed to sound! I think iv probably heard worse though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=661870258 Nancy Norman

I think she sounds awesome, myself.  Makes me think of original sounding artists like Tori Amos, Kate Bush.  Ladies that took risks and such.  I’m not overly familiar with her music at all but love the sound in this clip and personally feel she was right on for it all.  She sounded real.  Would people have preferred an auto-tuned generic sound to this?  Is that the problem?

    • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

It sounds even worse when you know how the song is actually supposed to sound.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XMHTBVF444W5CQICDNGHHMBPUE Becky

Well I don’t see whats so terrible about it, to be honest. I get that its’ not exactly an outstanding performance but i can’t understand why so much fuss has been made over it. I think her voice has quite a unique sound and i think some of things people have been saying about her are horrible.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think I would have liked her voice even if she had been singing on-key or clearly. Her music is just not everybody’s thing, I suppose, and it’s certainly not mine.

  • http://twitter.com/myridehome Carla

I only know the one song but I don’t think her performance was terrible enough to be so criticized. No one ever sounds good on SNL anyway.

    • Morsmordre79

I agree. Even Coldplay, a band I absolutely love, sounded less-than-awesome a few months ago when they performed on SNL.

  • Kelly Barker

It would’ve been better if she did something other than stand there and play with her hair.

  • http://twitter.com/SarahKHansen skhansen

I actually think her performance was fine. It was a very strange song, I’ll give people that, but it wasn’t totally horrible. People are making a controversy out of nothing.

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

It’s interesting, but not astounding. It definitely not bad. Plus, her dress is gorgeous :p

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1229430522 Kiara Rubin

Im sorry, Im a musician and I know for a fact that she did not sound good. Im not trying to be harsh. her performance was not interesting…

  • Anonymous

Personally, I think it was nerves. This was supposed to be her big intro to US audiences. You’d be nervous too. I’ve watched some of her other live performances and she sounds really really good in them. She was just terrified and it put her off totally.

And Dan is dead on about the online bit. All this shit about how her dad is rich and that’s why she has a career and she doesn’t deserve a chance to do what she loves. Load of assholes.

    • PotionsMaster007

i agree that she was nervous, but i had never heard her sing before and i think her voice is good but doesnt suite that genre

    • fred

it could be nerves but if you’re going to have a career in performing, you can’t let some bad nerves ruin a show. Yes it does affect the show but at the same time, you can’t blame it all on nerves.

      • Anonymous

The number of performances in a singer’s career that will have as much riding on them as this one did for Lana Del Rey is in single digits. Its not a regular performance. Its perfectly natural to be a bag of nerves.

  • Rdh014

In my opinion she was weird and I personally didn’t like her, but i’m sure people put there enjoyed her style of performance so i don’t see what the big deal. Shes just different.

  • dancernerd77

Feeling your inner Yoda today, Andrew? “Always a gentlemen, Radcliffe is…”

  • http://www.facebook.com/CoastieWifey Christine Holland

My husband walked into the room while I was watching SNL and thought it was a skit making fun of someone!

  • akacj18

i dont think she was any worse than Florence and The Machine can be live sometimes. i s’pose the biggest difference is Florence DOES have a bigger, stronger voice, so when she’s a bit off it doesn’t come off so feeble. it was probably just nerves.  i thought she sounded fine considering it was live. and she’s not the first artist to stand in the middle of the stage and do nothing. give the girl a break!

  • Anonymous

i know nothing about her, other than the fact that she is an absolutely atrocious singer.

  • Neonhide

When I saw it I was confused because I could not tell if this was supposed to be some kind of spoof or a legitimate musical number (first time I watched a whole episode of SNL and I did not know there would be music). It just seemed so exaggerated and fake. Now I feel kind of bad for her.

  • Alyssavanskyock

I don’t think she sounds absolutely horrible. I think it was a combination of nerves and the way she was trying to sing the song that made it sound bad.

  • http://twitter.com/marypao Mary

For a guy who doesn’t use social networks, he seems pretty up on what is being said on them.  Agree with Andrew – Dan is definitely a gentleman for coming to her defense like that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1683360003 Paige Barton

I think she has potential, but in no way she was ready for a live, televised performance

  • http://twitter.com/madhav516 Madhav Patel

She seemed pretty nervous, and she mumbled the lyrics and stuff. But her voice is pretty good, and she has talent. It was just a matter of nerves.

  • megmo07

I follow the indie music scene closely and “Video Games” hit pitchfork.com this summer and went viral quickly. She has an unusual style and people picked up on it. Her initial controversy lies in the supposed “makeover” she underwent to break into the indie music scene, which is just odd. However, she garnered major attention early, and I have to say, every song I’ve heard has been solid. Her rise to fame continues to be interesting. I’ve heard her a few other times live and she sounded much better. She was obviously nervous.

  • Lucia

Irrespective of whether she is decent or not, it was a poor decision on the shows part to include someone with literally no performances behind her in terms of tv. Undoubtedly they accepted her as a way of being diverse, but would have watched her in rehearsal and thought ‘yep, we made a mistake….’

    • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

What? She’s been on tv before, lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1423344618 Ashley Dunn

I do have to agree that Lana Del Rey did not sound good.  Her singing was the final straw that made me turn off the show… I have not heard any of her other live singing or recordings though, but on SNL she was dreadful.

  • http://twitter.com/xhpfanatic Grace Chen

    She’s really not that bad.

  • Anonymous

Dan kinda has to say that.

Dan kinda has to say that.

  • Izzi The Unicorn

I thought she was fine. She has a really interesting voice, though, and some people don’t understand that.

  • DreamNox58

I actually kind of liked it.  Almost enjoyed it.  I don’t know why but it put me in a Hunger Games mood for whatever reason.

  • Adrian_deveau

I don’t get what everyone is complaining about.. Saying that she’s weird and she’s singing too high or too low. Are people really that picky? Look back on some of the original unique artists like Kate Bush.. She was different as well. Nowadays, society is just used to everything being perfect and a copy of all music alike. Pure voice, one tone, auto tuned, and some sort of dancing beat involved. Get over it.. sure she sounds nervous but bash her down like she doesn’t have any talent? Have you HEARD any music on the radio these days? OH PLEASE… and everyone is complaining…. Just ridiculous.

  • Dreamer

I’d never heard of Lana Del Rey before and I actually thought she was making fun of someone else but then I realized she was singing for real. I fast forwarded through her second performance. Since then I’ve looked up her songs on iTunes and they aren’t nearly as bad as her live performance. That can either be attributed to the fact that she was just really nervous and it threw her off, or the did some major auto tuning

  • Amelia

there’s so little performances on SNL that aren’t completely horrible, if you ask me… i think the sound equipment on the show is to blame. even florence welch sounded awful when she was there. and lots of other singers who i’ve heard be amazing anywhere else. so, i wouldn’t blame this on lana’s singing abilities that quickly… (it was clear even from her studio tracks what she can and can’t do. she doesn’t have one of those magnificent belting voices. but she doesn’t need that, she’s something else.)

    • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

You should watch ome of her other performances then. She doesn’t live up to the hype so I don’t think it’s just because she was on SNL.

  • Richardson A Rebecca

    Yeah, she pretty much sucks.

  • Sarah

It sounds like she is making fun of people with speech problems.

  • Aart223

I was soo bored listening to her.

  • personofinterest

    She’s alright… but I wouldn’t listen to her.

  • http://postpottercritics.tumblr.com Melissa-Kristine Allingham

When I saw this, I thought she wasn’t that great but something in her voice is very good so I looked her up after and she’s brilliant. I consider a vocal artist and not a singer so she can be bad live and I don’t care as long as she sounds good in her songs.

  • Daniela

maybe she was really nervous. i know what its like to sing when your nervous, and it really does effect your preformance : but she doesn’t sound THAT bad. i don’t why people are fussing about it -.-

  • http://twitter.com/pixiemagic16 Lindsey Lisl

I like a few of her songs but her live performances never live up to expectations.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1365632483 Brandon Dufala

I’ve never been a fan of ANY of the musical performances on SNL.  I wish they would leave that part out of the show all together.  i don’t care who it is.  I typically mute the TV or change the channel until the  musical guest is finished.
