Recently, I’ve been on a science fiction kick and this is all thanks to Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia (which isn’t exactly sci-fi in the traditional sense). As I was thinking about science fiction films, it came to me that we have several lined up for this year. So, I thought I would take a moment a share the sci-flicks of 2012 that I’m most looking forward to. Afterwards, there is a list of fifteen of my favorites.
Upcoming Sci-Fi flicks for 2012
1. The Hunger Games – The anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ book stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. Of course, you already knew that.
2. Prometheus – Ridley Scott returns to the sci-fi genre in an Alien-esque pic starring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. Oh yeah, Michael Fassbender is in this. He is in everything now! Oh, and there’s something about a battle to save Earth and all that jazz.
3. John Carter – Honestly, I’m not quite sure what my opinion on this one is. It has a great cast and a great team. Yet, live action Disney films don’t often turn out so great (i.e. Prince of Persia). The film is based on a book by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ named “A Princess of Mars”. Wonder why they changed the title?
4. Total Recall – I’m actually looking forward to this remake of the 1990 film of the same name. Len Wiseman, director of the underrated Underworld, helms this project that also stars Collin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston. Michael Fassbender was considered for a role in this film by the way.
5. Looper – Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in a film about a hit man who “recognizes one of his targets as his future self”. The film is directed by Rian Johnson who directed Brick, The Brothers Bloom and the episode “Fly” in the Breaking Bad series. I, for one, welcome Willis’ return to sci-fi.
