Looks like Disney is living up to their “we make dreams come true” tagline, because they’ve just hired another first-time director for a film centering on one of their most famous villainesses!

High profile directors like Darren Aronofsky, Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro have been circling the film for almost two years, but according to Deadline (via Screenrant), visual effects supervisor and production designer Robert Stromberg will take the helm of the film, which is set to star Angelina Jolie as the namesake villainess and will be penned by classic Disney screenwriter Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King).

What do you think? Stromberg has won back-to-back Oscars for his work in Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, so we know that the film will drop some jaws but will he be able to handle directing a full length feature? We certainly hope so!

Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are my two favorite classic Disney films of all time (in that order) and it’ll certainly be a visual treat, so sure, I’ll bite. But I was really, really hoping for Darren Aronofsky.

This reminds me of when Walter Murch, one of the greatest cinematographer’s of all time directed “Return to Oz” as his directorial debut. Disney had to pay MGM a HUGE sum in order to use the Ruby Slippers(tm), and the film ended up being a critical and commercial failure. Many years later, the film has a bit of a cult following and I must admit that for all it’s quirks, it’s a visually stimulating film with a lot of charm. I believe that because this film IS being made by Disney, it should not face the same scrutiny as Murch did with Return to Oz. Several adaptations have been made of Oz, but MGM’s 1939 adaptation is what most people remember, and it is a classic. So some people felt he was treading on sacred ground. This time, I don’t believe that will be the case.

I’m thrilled that they’re giving a first-time director a go – you never know, he could be the next del Toro or Burton in the making! As an aspiring director it’s great to hear…now I just need to get a job as a production designer :P

Oh, HELL yes! Maleficent is such an awesome villain. This is going to be hot. As in, “now you shall deal with me, O Prince…and all the power of hell” hot.
