The 84th annual Academy Awards are just around the corner (this Sunday, to be exact), so it is high time that we share our own predictions on which films will strike Oscar gold come Sunday night. Take a look at the predictions from Hypable’s own Jeremy Baril and Jimmy Bean for the supporting acting categories after the jump!
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS |

Jeremy: Jeremy: To be completely honest, I find this year’s field rather weak. Not to say there weren’t suitable supporting female roles this past year, but I simply think the nominees are misguided. Out of the nominees, Octavia Spencer is the clear front-runner, and considering her competition I can’t exactly disagree with this (although I have yet to see Albert Nobbs). That being said, I think her performance in The Help was perfectly fine, it just didn’t wow me as much as it did others. Personally, I was more impressed with the performances by the likes of Shailene Woodley in “The Descendants” and Carey Mulligan in “Shame.”
Jimmy: To say that this year’s Best Supporting Actress race is a thin one would be a disservice to the ladies that were shunned something awful this year. My heart still remains with Shailene Woodley’s heart crushingly committed performance in “The Descendants”. Younger actresses have been notoriously shoved sideways from the Best Actress category into this one (see Hailee Steinfeld), so it makes sense (in that terrible Academic train of thought) that when a truly worthy supporting actress falls into a certain age group, her nomination simply gets brushed aside. It was charming to see McCarthy make the ranks, but out of the nominees, the ladies from “The Help” are the best choices. I could go for either Chastain or Spencer, but the latter simply had better material to work with and a stronger persona to attract the academy’s attention.

Jeremy: TThis is Christopher Plummer’s year, plain and simple. Not only did he give a delightful and heartfelt performance in “Beginners” as a man who comes out of the closet at the age of 75, but an Oscar would also serve as a “lifetime achievement” of sorts, which I have no problems in awarding to Plummer, I’m just glad he gave a performance to back it up! Also, let me just add how cool it is to say “Oscar-nominee, Jonah Hill!” That right there is why I can forgive the Oscars for never giving Hitchcock an Oscar…Yes, I’m kidding.
Jimmy: I normally wouldn’t want my summation of both supporting categories to turn into a snub-fest, but the exclusion of Albert Brooks and Patton Oswalt in this category in favor of Oscar favorites with less remarkable (yet still worthy) performances is just too much to go without mention. Like I was with McCarthy, I’m ecstatic to see Jonah Hill being looked at in a serious light. One can only wonder if this is only his first of many nominations. We can count on Plummer taking home the gold on Sunday and it’s well deserved, but word on the street is that Nick Nolte is still pulling 5-1 odds.
